The OH molecule, found abundantly in the Milky Way, has four transitions at the ground state rotational level(J = 3/2) at cm wavelengths. These are E1 transitions between the F+ and F- hyperfine levels of the Lambda doublet of the J=3/2 state. There are also forbidden M1 transitions between the hyperfine levels within each of the doublet states occuring at frequencies 53.171 MHz and 55.128 MHz. These are extremely weak and hence difficult to detect. However there is a possibility that the level populations giving rise to these lines are inverted under special conditions, in which case it may be possible to detect them through their maser emission. We describe the observational diagnostics for determining when the hyperfine levels are inverted, and identify a region near W44 where these conditions are satisfied. A high-velocity-resolution search for these hyperfine OH lines using the low frequency feeds on four antennas of the GMRT and the new GMRT Software Backend(GSB) was performed on this target near W44. We place a 3-sigma upper limit of ~17.3 Jy (at 1 km/s velocity resolution) for the 55 MHz line from this region. This corresponds to an upper limit of 3 X 10^8 for the amplification of the Galactic synchrotron emission providing the background.

The 1612 MHz hydroxyl maser in circumstellar envelopes has long been thought to be pumped by 34.6um photons. Only recently, the Infrared Space Observatory has made possible spectroscopic observations which enable the direct confirmation of this pumpi ng mechanism in a few cases. To look for the presence of this pumping line, we have searched the Infrared Space Observatory Data Archive and found 178 spectra with data around 34.6um for 87 galactic 1612MHz masers. The analysis performed showed that the noise level and the spectral resolution of the spectra are the most important factors affecting the detection of the 34.6um absorption line. Only 5 objects from the sample (3 red supergiants and 2 galactic center sources) are found to show clear 34.6um absorption (all of them already known) while two additional objects only tentatively show this line. The 3 supergiants show similar pump rates and their masers might be purely radiatively pumped. The pump rates of OH masers in late type stars are found to be about 0.05, only 1/5 of the theoretical value of 0.25 derived by Elitzur (1992). We have also found 16 maser sources which, according to the analysis assuming Elitzurs pump rate, should show the 34.6 $mu$m absorption line but do not. These non-detections can be tentatively explained by far-infrared photon pumping, clumpy nature of the OH masing region or a limb-filling emission effect in the OH shell.

OH absorption is currently the only viable way to detect OH molecules in non-masing galaxies at cosmological distances. There have been only 6 such detections at z>0.05 to date and so it is hard to put a statistically robust constraint on OH column d ensities in distant galaxies. We carried out a pilot OH absorption survey towards 8 associated and 1 intervening HI 21-cm absorbers using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We were able to constrain the OH abundance relative to HI ([OH]/[HI]) to be lower than 10^-6 ~ 10^-8 for redshifts z within [0.1919, 0.2241]. Although no individual detection was made, stacking three associated absorbers free of RFI provides a sensitive OH column density 3-sigma upper-limit ~ 1.57 x 10^14 (Tx/10K)(1/fc) cm^-2, which corresponds to a [OH]/[HI] < 5.45 x 10^-8. Combining with archival data, we show that associated absorbers have a slightly lower OH abundance than intervening absorbers. Our results are consistent with a trend of decreasing OH abundance with decreasing redshift.
Ultra-steep spectrum (USS) radio sources are good tracers of powerful radio galaxies at $z > 2$. Identification of even a single bright radio galaxy at $z > 6$ can be used to detect redshifted 21cm absorption due to neutral hydrogen in the intervenin g IGM. Here we describe a new sample of high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) candidates constructed from the TGSS ADR1 survey at 150 MHz. We employ USS selection ($alpha le -1.3$) in $sim10000$ square degrees, in combination with strict size selection and non-detections in all-sky optical and infrared surveys. We apply flux density cuts that probe a unique parameter space in flux density ($50 < S_{textrm{150}} < 200$ mJy) to build a sample of 32 HzRG candidates. Follow-up Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 1.4 GHz with an average beam size of $1.3$ arcseconds ($$) revealed $sim 48%$ of sources to have a single radio component. P-band (370 MHz) imaging of 17 of these sources revealed a flattening radio SED for ten sources at low frequencies, which is expected from compact HzRGs. Two of our sources lie in fields where deeper multi-wavelength photometry and ancillary radio data are available and for one of these we find a best-fit photo-z of $4.8 pm 2.0$. The other source has $z_{textrm{phot}}=1.4 pm 0.1$ and a small angular size ($3.7$), which could be associated with an obscured star forming galaxy or with a dead elliptical. One USS radio source not part of the HzRG sample but observed with the VLA nonetheless is revealed to be a candidate giant radio galaxy with a host galaxy photo-z of $1.8pm0.5$, indicating a size of 875 kpc.

From targeted observations of ground-state OH masers towards 702 Multibeam (MMB) survey 6.7-GHz methanol masers, between Galactic longitudes 186$^{circ}$ through the Galactic centre to 20$^{circ}$, made as part of the `MAGMO project, we present the p hysical and polarisation properties of the 1720-MHz OH maser transition, including the identification of Zeeman pairs. We present 10 new and 23 previously catalogued 1720-MHz OH maser sources detected towards star formation regions. In addition, we also detected 16 1720-MHz OH masers associated with supernova remnants and two sites of diffuse OH emission. Towards the 33 star formation masers, we identify 44 Zeeman pairs, implying magnetic field strengths ranging from $-$11.4 to $+$13.2 mG, and a median magnetic field strength of $|B_{LOS}|$ $sim$ 6 mG. With limited statistics, we present the in-situ magnetic field orientation of the masers and the Galactic magnetic field distribution revealed by the 1720-MHz transition. We also examine the association statistics of 1720-MHz OH SFR masers with other ground-state OH masers, excited-state OH masers, class I and class II methanol masers and water masers, and compare maser positions with mid-infrared images of the parent star forming regions. Of the 33 1720-MHz star formation masers, ten are offset from their central exciting sources, and appear to be associated with outflow activity.
We present details of the Automated Radio Telescope Imaging Pipeline (ARTIP) and results of a sensitive blind search for HI and OH absorbers at $z<0.4$ and $z<0.7$, respectively. ARTIP is written in Python 3.6, extensively uses the Common Astronomy S oftware Application (CASA) tools and tasks, and is designed to enable the geographically-distributed MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) team to collaboratively process large volumes of radio interferometric data. We apply it to the first MALS dataset obtained using the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope and 32K channel mode of the correlator. With merely 40 minutes on target, we present the most sensitive spectrum of PKS1830-211 ever obtained and characterize the known HI ($z=0.19$) and OH ($z=0.89$) absorbers. We further demonstrate ARTIPs capabilities to handle realistic observing scenarios by applying it to a sample of 72 bright radio sources observed with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) to blindly search for HI and OH absorbers. We estimate the numbers of HI and OH absorbers per unit redshift to be $n_{21}(zsim0.18)<$0.14 and $n_{rm OH}(zsim0.40)<$0.12, respectively, and constrain the cold gas covering factor of galaxies at large impact parameters (50 kpc $<rho<$ 150 kpc) to be less than 0.022. Due to the small redshift path, $Delta zsim$13 for HI with column density$>5.4times10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$, the survey has probed only the outskirts of star-forming galaxies at $rho>30$ kpc. MALS with the expected $Delta zsim10^{3-4}$ will overcome this limitation and provide stringent constraints on the cold gas fraction of galaxies in diverse environments over $0<z<1.5$.
