Wegner describes coordination as constrained interaction. We take this approach literally and define a coordination model based on interaction constraints and partial, iterative and interactive constraint satisfaction. Our model captures behaviour described in terms of synchronisation and data flow constraints, plus various modes of interaction with the outside world provided by external constraint symbols, on-the-fly constraint generation, and coordination variables. Underlying our approach is an engine performing (partial) constraint satisfaction of the sets of constraints. Our model extends previous work on three counts: firstly, a more advanced notion of external interaction is offered; secondly, our approach enables local satisfaction of constraints with appropriate partial solutions, avoiding global synchronisation over the entire constraints set; and, as a consequence, constraint satisfaction can finally occur concurrently, and multiple parts of a set of constraints can be solved and interact with the outside world in an asynchronous manner, unless synchronisation is required by the constraints. This paper describes the underlying logic, which enables a notion of local solution, and relates this logic to the more global approach of our previous work based on classical logic.

The paper introduces a knowledge representation language that combines the event calculus with description logic in a logic programming framework. The purpose is to provide the user with an expressive language for modelling and analysing systems that evolve over time. The approach is exemplified with the logic programming language as implemented in the Fusemate system. The paper extends Fusemates rule language with a weakly DL-safe interface to the description logic $cal ALCIF$ and adapts the event calculus to this extended language. This way, time-stamped ABoxes can be manipulated as fluents in the event calculus. All that is done in the frame of Fusemates concept of stratification by time. The paper provides conditions for soundness and completeness where appropriate. Using an elaborated example it demonstrates the interplay of the event calculus, description logic and logic programming rules for computing possible models as plausible explanations of the current state of the modelled system.

Mereology is the study of parts and the relationships that hold between them. We introduce a behavioral approach to mereology, in which systems and their parts are known only by the types of behavior they can exhibit. Our discussion is formally topos -theoretic, and agnostic to the topos, providing maximal generality; however, by using only its internal logic we can hide the details and readers may assume a completely elementary set-theoretic discussion. We consider the relationship between various parts of a whole in terms of how behavioral constraints are passed between them, and give an inter-modal logic that generalizes the usual alethic modalities in the setting of symmetric accessibility.

Algebraic logic studies algebraic theories related to proposition and first-order logic. A new algebraic approach to first-order logic is sketched in this paper. We introduce the notion of a quantifier theory, which is a functor from the category of a monad of sets to the category of Boolean algebras, together with a uniquely determined system of quantifiers. A striking feature of this approach is that Cayleys Completeness Theorem and Godels Completeness Theorem can be stated and proved in a much simpler fashion for quantifier theories. Both theorems are due to Halmos for polyadic algebras. We also present a simple transparent treatment of ultraproducts of models of a quantifier theory.
Web service choreographies specify conditions on observable interactions among the services. An important question in this regard is realizability: given a choreography C, does there exist a set of service implementations I that conform to C ? Furthe r, if C is realizable, is there an algorithm to construct implementations in I ? We propose a local temporal logic in which choreographies can be specified, and for specifications in the logic, we solve the realizability problem by constructing service implementations (when they exist) as communicating automata. These are nondeterministic finite state automata with a coupling relation. We also report on an implementation of the realizability algorithm and discuss experimental results.

The timed position of documents retrieved by learning to rank models can be seen as signals. Signals carry useful information such as drop or rise of documents over time or user behaviors. In this work, we propose to use the logic formalism called Si gnal Temporal Logic (STL) to characterize document behaviors in ranking accordingly to the specified formulas. Our analysis shows that interesting document behaviors can be easily formalized and detected thanks to STL formulas. We validate our idea on a dataset of 100K product signals. Through the presented framework, we uncover interesting patterns, such as cold start, warm start, spikes, and inspect how they affect our learning to ranks models.
