Vortex states in magnetic nanodisks are essentially affected by surface/interface induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Within a micromagnetic approach we calculate the equilibrium sizes and shape of the vortices as functions of magnetic field, the material and geometrical parameters of nanodisks. It was found that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling can considerably increase sizes of vortices with right chirality and suppress vortices with opposite chirality. This allows to form a bistable system of homochiral vortices as a basic element for storage applications.

We investigate the influence of artificial defects (small holes) inserted into magnetic nanodisks on the vortex core dynamics. One and two holes (antidots) are considered. In general, the core falls into the hole but, in particular, we would like to remark an interesting phenomenon not yet observed, which is the vortex core switching induced by the vortex-hole interactions. It occurs for the case with only one hole and for very special conditions involving the hole size and position as well as the disk size. Any small deformation in the disk geometry such as the presence of a second antidot changes completely the vortex dynamics and the vortex core eventually falls into one of the defects. After trapped, the vortex center still oscillates with a very high frequency and small amplitude around the defect center.
Volborthite offers an interesting example of a highly frustrated quantum magnet in which ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions compete on anisotropic kagome lattices. A recent density functional theory calculation has provided a magnetic m odel based on coupled trimers, which is consistent with a broad 1/3-magnetization plateau observed experimentally. Here we study the effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in volborthite. We derive an effective model in which pseudospin-1/2 moments emerging on trimers form a network of an anisotropic triangular lattice. Using the effective model, we show that for a magnetic field perpendicular to the kagome layer, magnon excitations from the 1/3-plateau feel a Berry curvature due to the DM interactions, giving rise to a thermal Hall effect. Our magnon Bose gas theory can explain qualitative features of the magnetization and the thermal Hall conductivity measured experimentally. A further quantitative comparison with experiment poses constraints on the coupling constants in the effective model, promoting a quasi-one-dimensional picture. Based on this picture, we analyze low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams using effective field theory, and point out their crucial dependence on the field direction.
Magnetic skyrmions in chiral-lattice ferromagnets are currently attracting enormous research interest because of their potential applications in spintronic devices. However, they emerge in bulk specimens only in a narrow window of temperature and mag netic field. This limited stability regime is recognized as an obstacle to technical applications. Recent experiments demonstrated that the thermodynamic stability of magnetic skyrmions is enhanced or suppressed by the application of a uniaxial strain depending on its axial direction in bulk chiral-lattice ferromagnets MnSi [Y. Nii et al., Nat. Commun. 6, 8539 (2015), A. Chacon et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 267202 (2015)] and Cu2OSeO3 [S. Seki et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 220404(R) (2017)]. Motivated by these experimental discoveries, we theoretically investigated the effects of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interactions on the stability of magnetic skyrmions caused by this uniaxial strain. We find that magnetic skyrmions are significantly stabilized (destabilized) in the presence of anisotropic DM interactions when an external magnetic field lies perpendicular (parallel) to the anisotropy axis, along which the DM coupling is strengthened. Our results account completely for the experimentally observed strain-induced stabilization and destabilization of magnetic skyrmions and provide a firm ground for possible strain engineering of skyrmion-based electronic devices.
The influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin ferromagnetic films and chiral magnonic crystals on the behavior of spin waves is reviewed. During the last decade, it has been shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that th is anisotropic exchange interaction produces non-reciprocal features on the spin-wave spectrum of a magnetic system, a phenomenon that occurs both for bulk and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. More recently, the concept of a chiral magnonic crystal has been introduced, where the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is periodic. The effect of this periodicity include additional features such as flat bands, indirect gaps, and an unusual spin-wave evolution.
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), being one of the origins for chiral magnetism, is currently attracting huge attention in the research community focusing on applied magnetism and spintronics. For future applications an accurate measuremen t of its strength is indispensable. In this work, we present a review of the state of the art of measuring the coefficient $D$ of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the DMI constant, focusing on systems where the interaction arises from the interface between two materials. The measurement techniques are divided into three categories: a) domain wall based measurements, b) spin wave based measurements and c) spin orbit torque based measurements. We give an overview of the experimental techniques as well as their theoretical background and models for the quantification of the DMI constant $D$. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each method and compare $D$ values in different stacks. The review aims to obtain a better understanding of the applicability of the different techniques to different stacks and of the origin of apparent disagreement of literature values.
