We demonstrate optical control of the polarization eigenstates of a neutral quantum dot exciton without any external fields. By varying the excitation power of a circularly polarized laser in micro-photoluminescence experiments on individual InGaAs quantum dots we control the magnitude and direction of an effective internal magnetic field created via optical pumping of nuclear spins. The adjustable nuclear magnetic field allows us to tune the linear and circular polarization degree of the neutral exciton emission. The quantum dot can thus act as a tunable light polarization converter.
Quantum dots inserted inside semiconductor nanowires are extremely promising candidates as building blocks for solid-state based quantum computation and communication. They provide very high crystalline and optical properties and offer a convenient g
eometry for electrical contacting. Having a complete determination and full control of their emission properties is one of the key goals of nanoscience researchers. Here we use strain as a tool to create in a single magnetic nanowire quantum dot a light-hole exciton, an optically active quasiparticle formed from a single electron bound to a single light hole. In this frame, we provide a general description of the mixing within the hole quadruplet induced by strain or confinement. A multi-instrumental combination of cathodoluminescence, polarisation-resolved Fourier imaging and magneto-optical spectroscopy, allow us to fully characterize the hole ground state, including its valence band mixing with heavy hole states.
Metasurface, a kind of two-dimensional structured medium, represents a novel platform to manipulate the propagation of light at subwavelength scale. In linear optical regime, many interesting topics such as planar metalens, metasurface optical hologr
aphy and so on have been widely investigated. Recently, metasurfaces go into nonlinear optical regime. While it is recognized that the local symmetry of the meta-atoms plays vital roles, its relationship with global symmetry of the nonlinear metasurfaces remains elusive. According to the Penrose tiling and the newly proposed hexagonal quasicrystalline tiling, here we designed and fabricated the nonlinear optical quasicrystal metasurfaces based on the geometric phase controlled plasmonic meta-atoms with local rotational symmetry. The second harmonic waves will be determined by both the tiling schemes of quasicrystal metasurfaces and the local symmetry of meta-atoms they consist of. The proposed concept opens new routes for designing nonlinear metasurface crystals with desired optical functionalities.
The optical spin Hall effect (OSHE) is a transport phenomenon of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, caused by the polaritonic spin-orbit interaction, that leads to the formation of spin textures. In the semiconductor cavity, the physi
cal basis of the spin orbit coupling is an effective magnetic field caused by the splitting of transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic (TE-TM) modes. The spin textures can be observed in the near field (local spin distribution of polaritons), and as light polarization patterns in the more readily observable far field. For future applications in spinoptronic devices, a simple and robust control mechanism, which establishes a one-to-one correspondence between stationary incident light intensity and far-field polarization pattern, is needed. We present such a control scheme, which is made possible by a specific double-microcavity design.
Several important proposals to use semiconductor quantum dots in quantum information technology rely on the control of the dark exciton ground states, such as dark exciton based qubits with a $mu$s life time. In this paper, we present an efficient wa
y to occupy the dark exciton ground state by a single short laser pulse. The scheme is based on an optical excitation with a longitudinal field component featured by, e.g., radially polarized beams or certain Laguerre-Gauss or Bessel beams. Utilizing this component, we show within a configuration interaction approach that high-energy exciton states composed of light-hole excitons and higher dark heavy-hole excitons can be addressed. When the higher exciton relaxes, a dark exciton in its ground state is created.
We derive a general relation between the fine structure splitting (FSS) and the exciton polarization angle of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) under uniaxial stress. We show that the FSS lower bound under external stress can be predicted by the exci
ton polarization angle and FSS under zero stress. The critical stress can also be determined by monitoring the change in exciton polarization angle. We confirm the theory by performing atomistic pseudopotential calculations for the InAs/GaAs QDs. The work provides a deep insight into the dots asymmetry and their optical properties, and a useful guide in selecting QDs with smallest FSS which are crucial in entangled photon sources applications.
