We propose to encode a register of quantum bits in different collective electron spin wave excitations in a solid medium. Coupling to spins is enabled by locating them in the vicinity of a superconducting transmission line cavity, and making use of their strong collective coupling to the quantized radiation field. The transformation between different spin waves is achieved by applying gradient magnetic fields across the sample, while a Cooper Pair Box, resonant with the cavity field, may be used to carry out one- and two-qubit gate operations.

Coherent excitation of an ensemble of quantum objects underpins quantum many-body phenomena, and offers the opportunity to realize a quantum memory to store information from a qubit. Thus far, a deterministic and coherent interface between a single q uantum system, e.g. a qubit, and such an ensemble has remained elusive. We first use an electron to cool the mesoscopic nuclear-spin ensemble of a semiconductor quantum dot to the nuclear sideband-resolved regime. We then implement an all-optical approach to access these individual quantized electronic-nuclear spin transitions. Finally, we perform coherent optical rotations of a single collective nuclear spin excitation corresponding to a spin wave called a nuclear magnon. These results constitute the building blocks of a dedicated local memory per quantum-dot spin qubit and promise a solid-state platform for quantum-state engineering of isolated many-body systems.
We propose a quantum-enhanced iterative (with $K$ steps) measurement scheme based on an ensemble of $N$ two-level probes which asymptotically approaches the Heisenberg limit $delta_K propto R^{-K/(K+1)}$, $R$ the number of quantum resources. The prot ocol is inspired by Kitaevs phase estimation algorithm and involves only collective manipulation and measurement of the ensemble. The iterative procedure takes the shot-noise limited primary measurement with precision $delta_1propto N^{-1/2}$ to increasingly precise results $delta_Kpropto N^{-K/2}$. A straightforward implementation of the algorithm makes use of a two-component atomic cloud of Bosons in the precision measurement of a magnetic field.
Single spin detection is a key objective in the field of metrology. There have been many experimental and theoretical investigations for the spin detection based on the use of probe spins. A probe spin shows the precession due to dipole-dipole intera ction from a target spin, and measurement results of the probe spin allow us to estimate the state of the target spin. Here, we investigate performance of single-spin detection when using an ensemble of probe spins. Even though the ensemble of probe spins inevitably induces projection noise that could hinder the signal from the target spin, optimization of the configuration of the spin ensemble improves the sensitivity such that enhancement of the signal can be much larger than the projection noise. The probe-spin ensemble is especially useful at a large distance from the target spin, where it is difficult for a single spin to read out the target spin within a reasonable repetition time. Our results pave the way for a new strategy to realize efficient single-spin detections.
We propose a scheme for quantum information processing based on donor electron spins in semiconductors, with an architecture complementary to the original Kane proposal. We show that a naive implementation of electron spin qubits provides only modest improvement over the Kane scheme, however through the introduction of global gate control we are able to take full advantage of the fast electron evolution timescales. We estimate that the latent clock speed is 100-1000 times that of the nuclear spin quantum computer with the ratio $T_{2}/T_{ops}$ approaching the $10^{6}$ level.
Electron-spin nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond are a natural candidate to act as a quantum memory for superconducting qubits because of their large collective coupling and long coherence times. We report here the first demonstration of stron g coupling and coherent exchange of a single quantum of energy between a flux-qubit and an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy color centers.
