Real and momentum space spectrally resolved images of microcavity polariton emission in the regime of condensation are investigated under non resonant excitation using a laser source with reduced intensity fluctuations on the timescale of the exciton lifetime. We observe that the polariton emission consists of many macroscopically occupied modes. Lower energy modes are strongly localized by the photonic potential disorder on a scale of few microns. Higher energy modes have finite k-vectors and are delocalized over 10-15 microns. All the modes exhibit long range spatial coherence comparable to their size. We provide a theoretical model describing the behavior of the system with the results of the simulations in good agreement with the experimental observations. We show that the multimode emission of the polariton condensate is a result of its nonequilibrium character, the interaction with the local photonic potential and the reduced intensity fluctuations of the excitation laser.

We report on the observation of quantum coherence of Bose-Einstein condensed photons in an optically-pumped, dye-filled microcavity. We find that coherence is long-range in space and time above condensation threshold, but short-range below threshold, compatible with thermal-equilibrium theory. Far above threshold, the condensate is no longer at thermal equilibrium and is fragmented over non-degenerate, spatially overlapping modes. A microscopic theory including cavity loss, molecular structure and relaxation shows that this multimode condensation is similar to multimode lasing induced by imperfect gain clamping.
Low-dimensional systems are beautiful examples of many-body quantum physics. For one-dimensional systems the Luttinger liquid approach provides insight into universal properties. Much is known of the equilibrium state, both in the weakly and strongly interacting regime. However, it remains a challenge to probe the dynamics by which this equilibrium state is reached. Here we present a direct experimental study of the coherence dynamics in both isolated and coupled degenerate 1d Bose gases. Dynamic splitting is used to create two 1d systems in a phase coherent state. The time evolution of the coherence is revealed in local phase shifts of the subsequently observed interference patterns. Completely isolated 1d Bose gases are observed to exhibit a universal sub-exponential coherence decay in excellent agreement with recent predictions by Burkov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 200404 (2007)]. For two coupled 1d Bose gases the coherence factor is observed to approach a non-zero equilibrium value as predicted by a Bogoliubov approach. This coupled-system decay to finite coherence is the matter wave equivalent of phase locking two lasers by injection. The non-equilibrium dynamics of superfluids plays an important role in a wide range of physical systems, such as superconductors, quantum-Hall systems, superfluid Helium, and spin systems. Our experiments studying coherence dynamics show that 1d Bose gases are ideally suited for investigating this class of phenomena.
Using a microscopic many-particle theory, we propose all-optical switching in planar semiconductor microcavities where a weak beam switches a stronger signal. Based on four-wave-mixing instabilities, the general scheme is a semiconductor adaptation o f a recently demonstrated switch in an atomic vapor [Dawes et al., Science 308, 672 (2005)].
We report non-equilibrium magnetodynamics in the Rashba-superconductor GeTe, which lacks inversion symmetry in the bulk. We find that at low temperature the system exhibits a non-equilibrium state, which decays on time scales that exceed conventional electronic scattering times by many orders of magnitude. This reveals a non-equilibrium magnetoresponse that is asymmetric under magnetic field reversal and, strikingly, induces a non-equilibrium superconducting state distinct from the equilibrium one. We develop a model of a Rashba system where non-equilibrium configurations relax on a finite timescale which captures the qualitative features of the data. We also obtain evidence for the slow dynamics in another non-superconducting Rashba system. Our work provides novel insights into the dynamics of non-centrosymmetric superconductors and Rashba systems in general.
We demonstrate electromagnetic interaction between distant quantum dots (QDs), as is observed from transient pump-probe differential reflectivity measurements. The QD-exciton lifetime is measured as a function of the probe photon energy and shows a s trong resonant behavior with respect to the QD density of states. The observed exciton lifetime spectrum reveals a subradiance-like coupling between the QD, with a 12 times enhancement of the lifetime at the center of the ground state transition. This effect is due to a mutual electromagnetic coupling between resonant QDs, which extends over distances considerably beyond the nearest neighbor QD-QD separation.
