A new effect of electromagnetic radiation generated by heat flow in superfluid helium has been detected experimentally. The generating heat flow was produced using hydrodynamic thermal guns. Electromagnetic radiation was registered with a dielectric disk resonator in the interval 1.4-2.17K. The power of the thermal gun heater varied within Q up to 1mW. A distinct signal of electromagnetic radiation was registered when the thermal gun was on and there was no signal at Q=0. The frequency of the generated electromagnetic radiation was measured with a Fabry-Perrot interferometer. It was about 180GHz at T=1.4K and decreased with a rising temperature practically following the temperature dependence of a roton gap. The detected signal was investigated as a function of the heat flow temperature, direction and power Q. The results obtained show that He II behaves as a two - level system in which the difference between the levels is equal to the roton energy.

The transition to turbulence in the boundary flow of superfluid $^4$He is investigated using a vortex--free vibrating wire. At high wire vibration velocities, we found that stable alternating flow around the wire enters a turbulent phase triggered by free vortex rings. Numerical simulations of vortex dynamics demonstrate that vortex rings can attach to the surface of an oscillating obstacle and expand unstably due to the boundary flow of the superfluid, forming turbulence. Experimental investigations indicate that the turbulent phase continues even after stopping the injection of vortex rings, which is also confirmed by the simulations.

This is a brief overview of the main physical ideas for application of field effect transistors for generation and detection of TeraHertz radiation. Resonant frequencies of the two-dimensional plasma oscillations in FETs increase with the reduction o f the channel dimensions and reach the THz range for sub-micron gate lengths. When the mobility is high enough, the dynamics of a short channel FET at THz frequencies is dominated by plasma waves. This may result, on the one hand, in a spontaneous generation of plasma waves by a dc current and on the other hand, in a resonant response to the incoming radiation. In the opposite case, when plasma oscillations are overdamped, the FET can operate as an efficient broadband THz detector.
A density functional theory is used to investigate the instability arising in superfluid $^4$He as it flows at velocity u just above the Landau critical velocity of rotons v_c. Confirming an early theoretical prediction by one of us [JETP Lett. 39, 5 11 (1984)], we find that a stationary periodic modulation of the density occurs, with amplitude proportional to (u-v_c)^{1/2} and wave vector equal to the roton wave vector. This density pattern is studied for supercritical flow both in bulk helium and in a channel of nanometer cross-section.
Helium in nanoporous media has attracted much interest as a model Bose system with disorder and confinement. Here we have examined how a change in porous structure by preplating a monolayer of krypton affects the superfluid properties of $^4$He adsor bed or confined in a nanoporous Gelsil glass, which has a three-dimensional interconnected network of nanopores of 5.8 nm in diameter. Isotherms of adsorption and desorption of nitrogen show that monolayer preplating of Kr decreases the effective pore diameter to 4.7 nm and broadens the pore size distribution by about eight times from the sharp distribution of the bare Gelsil sample. The superfluid properties were studied by a torsional oscillator for adsorbed film states and pressurized liquid states, both before and after the monolayer Kr preplating. In the film states, both the superfluid transition temperature $T_{mathrm c}$ and the superfluid density decrease about 10 percent by Kr preplating. The suppression of film superfluidity is attributed to the quantum localization of $^4$He atoms by the randomness in the substrate potential, which is caused by the preplating--induced broadening of the pore size distribution. In the pressurized liquid states, the superfluid density $rho_{mathrm s}$ is found to increase by 10 percent by Kr preplating, whereas $T_{mathrm c}$ is decreased by 2 percent at all pressures. The unexpected enhancement of $rho_{mathrm s}$ might indicate the existence of an unknown disorder effect for confined $^4$He.
We study nonlinear optical response of Landau quantized graphene to an intense electromagnetic wave. In particular, we consider high harmonic generation process. It is shown that one can achieve efficient generation of high harmonics with strong radi ation fields -- when the work of the wave electric field on the magnetic length is larger than pump photon energy. At that high harmonics generation process takes place for a wide range of the pump wave frequencies and intensities even for significant broadening of Landau levels because of impurities in graphene.
