We investigate the behavior of the dc voltage drop in a periodically driven double barrier structure (DBS) sensed by voltages probes that are weakly coupled to the system. We find that the four terminal resistance $R_{4t}$ measured with the probes located outside the DBS results identical to the resistance measured in the same structure under a stationary bias voltage difference between left and right reservoirs. This result, valid beyond the adiabatic pumping regime, can be taken as an indication of the universal character of $R_{4t}$ as a measure of the resistive properties of a sample, irrespectively of the mechanism used to induce the transport.

We demonstrate the robust operation of a gallium arsenide tunable-barrier single-electron pump operating with 1 part-per-million accuracy at a temperature of $1.3$~K and a pumping frequency of $500$~MHz. The accuracy of current quantisation is invest igated as a function of multiple control parameters, and robust plateaus are seen as a function of three control gate voltages and RF drive power. The electron capture is found to be in the decay-cascade, rather than the thermally-broadened regime. The observation of robust plateaus at an elevated temperature which does not require expensive refrigeration is an important step towards validating tunable-barrier pumps as practical current standards.
We engineer a system of two strongly confined quantum dots to gain reproducible electrostatic control of the spin at zero magnetic field. Coupling the dots in a tight ring-shaped potential with two tunnel barriers, we demonstrate that an electric fie ld can switch the electron ground state between a singlet and a triplet configuration. Comparing our experimental co-tunneling spectroscopy data to a full many-body treatment of interacting electrons in a double-barrier quantum ring, we find excellent agreement in the evolution of many-body states with electric and magnetic fields. The calculations show that the singlet-triplet energy crossover, not found in conventionally coupled quantum dots, is made possible by the ring-shaped geometry of the confining potential.
We demonstrate the operation of a quantum spin pump based on cyclic radio-frequency excitation of a GaAs quantum dot, including the ability to pump pure spin without pumping charge. The device takes advantage of bidirectional mesoscopic fluctuations of pumped current, made spin-dependent by the application of an in-plane Zeeman field. Spin currents are measured by placing the pump in a focusing geometry with a spin-selective collector.

A device is proposed that is similar in spirit to the electron turnstile except that it operates within a quantum Hall fluid. In the integer quantum Hall regime, this device pumps an integer number of electrons per cycle. In the fractional regime, it pumps an integer number of fractionally charged quasiparticles per cycle. It is proposed that such a device can make an accurate measurement of the charge of the quantum Hall effect quasiparticles.
The conductance quantization and shot noise below the first conductance plateau $G_0 = 2e^2/h$ are measured in a quantum point contact fabricated in a GaAs/AlGaAs tunnel-coupled double quantum well. From the conductance measurement, we observe a clea r quantized conductance plateau at $0.5G_0$ and a small minimum in the transconductance at $0.7 G_0$. Spectroscopic transconductance measurement reveals three maxima inside the first diamond, thus suggesting three minima in the dispersion relation for electric subbands. Shot noise measurement shows that the Fano factor behavior is consistent with this observation. We propose a model that relates these features to a wavenumber directional split subband due to a strong Rashba spin--orbit interaction that is induced by the center barrier potential gradient of the double-layer sample.
