The correction to the wave function of the ground state in a hydrogen-like atom due to an external homogenous magnetic field is found exactly in the parameter $Zalpha$. The $j=1/2$ projection of the correction to the wave function of the $ns_{1/2}$ state due to the external homogeneous magnetic field is found for arbitrary $n$. The $j=3/2$ projection of the correction to the wave function of the $ns_{1/2}$ state due to the nuclear magnetic moment is also found for arbitrary $n$. Using these results, we have calculated the shielding of the nuclear magnetic moment by the $ns_{1/2}$ electron.

We report precision measurements of the nuclear magnetic moment of textsuperscript{43}Catextsuperscript{+}, made by microwave spectroscopy of the 4s $^2$S$_{1/2}$ $left|F=4, M=0rightrangle rightarrow left|F=3, M=1rightrangle$ ground level hyperfine c lock transition at a magnetic field of $approx$ 146 G, using a single laser-cooled ion in a Paul trap. We measure a clock transition frequency of $f = 3199941076.920 pm 0.046$ Hz, from which we determine $mu_I / mu_{rm{N}} = -1.315350(9)(1)$, where the uncertainty (9) arises from uncertainty in the hyperfine $A$ constant, and the (1) arises from the uncertainty in our measurement. This measurement is not corrected for diamagnetic shielding due to the bound electrons. We make a second measurement which is less precise but agrees with the first. We use our $mu_I$ value, in combination with previous NMR results, to extract the change in shielding constant of calcium ions due to solvation in D$_2$O: $Delta sigma = -0.00022(1)$.
A Cs fountain electron electric dipole moment (EDM) experiment using electric-field quantization is demonstrated. With magnetic fields reduced to 200 pT or less, the electric field lifts the degeneracy between hyperfine levels of different|mF| and, a long with the slow beam and fountain geometry, suppresses systematics from motional magnetic fields. Transitions are induced and the atoms polarized and analyzed in field-free regions. The feasibility of reaching a sensitivity to an electron EDM of 2 x 10 exp(-50) C-m [1.3 x 10 exp(-29) e-cm] in a cesium fountain experiment is discussed.

The electron impact ionization of atomic hydrogen is calculated for incident elrctron energy 76.46 eV. The Hartree-Fock approximation is used to calculate the initial state which includes both bound and continum wave functions. The final state contin uum electron wave functions are obtained in the potential of hydrogen ion. The interaction between the two final state continuum electrons is approximated with the screening potential determined variationally.
In calculating the energy corrections to the hydrogen levels we can identify two different types of modifications of the Coulomb potential $V_{C}$, with one of them being the standard quantum electrodynamics corrections, $delta V$, satisfying $left|d elta Vright|llleft|V_{C}right|$ over the whole range of the radial variable $r$. The other possible addition to $V_{C}$ is a potential arising due to the finite size of the atomic nucleus and as a matter of fact, can be larger than $V_{C}$ in a very short range. We focus here on the latter and show that the electric potential of the proton displays some undesirable features. Among others, the energy content of the electric field associated with this potential is very close to the threshold of $e^+e^-$ pair production. We contrast this large electric field of the Maxwell theory with one emerging from the non-linear Euler-Heisenberg theory and show how in this theory the short range electric field becomes smaller and is well below the pair production threshold.
Theoretical studies are presented how the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron in H-like ions in electrostatic storage rings can sensitively be determined. With the proposed experiments a new constraint of about $10^{-29}$ e cm for the electr on EDM can be established what is by an order of magnitude more restrictive than the existing bounds. Experiments with H-like ions may provide a possibility to distinguish between the electron EDM effect and the effect of P,T violating interaction between the atomic electron and the nucleus.
