In this paper, we study the possibility of building a model of the oscillating universe with quintom matter in the framework of 4-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. Taking the two-scalar-field quintom model as an example, we find in the model parameter space there are five different types of solutions which correspond to: (I) a cyclic universe with the minimal and maximal values of the scale factor remaining the same in every cycle, (II) an oscillating universe with its minimal and maximal values of the scale factor increasing cycle by cycle, (III) an oscillating universe with its minimal and maximal values of the scale factor decreasing cycle by cycle, (IV) an oscillating universe with its scale factor always increasing, and (V) an oscillating universe with its scale factor always decreasing.

An oscillating universe cycles through a series of expansions and contractions. We propose a model in which ``phantom energy with $p < -rho$ grows rapidly and dominates the late-time expanding phase. The universes energy density is so large that the effects of quantum gravity are important at both the beginning and the end of each expansion (or contraction). The bounce can be caused by high energy modifications to the Friedmann equation, which make the cosmology nonsingular. The classic black hole overproduction of oscillating universes is resolved due to their destruction by the phantom energy.
We discuss how one can reconstruct the thermal history of the Universe by combining cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements and gravitational wave (GW) direct detection experiments. Assuming various expansion eras to take place after the infla tionary reheating and before Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), we show how measurements of the GW spectrum can be used to break the degeneracies associated with CMB data, the latter being sensitive to the total amount of cosmic expansion only. In this context, we argue that the expected constraints from future CMB and GW experiments can probe a scenario in which there exists late-time entropy production in addition to the standard reheating. We show that, for some cases, combining data from future CMB and GW direct detection experiments allows the determination of the reheating temperature, the amount of entropy produced and the temperature at which the standard radiation era started.
Oscillating scalar fields, with an oscillation frequency much greater than the expansion rate, have been proposed as models for dark energy. We examine these models, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the ratio of the oscillation frequency to the expansion rate. We show that this ratio always increases with time if the dark energy density declines less rapidly than the background energy density. This allows us to classify oscillating dark energy models in terms of the epoch at which the oscillation frequency exceeds the expansion rate, which is effectively the time at which rapid oscillations begin. There are three basic types of behavior: early oscillation models, in which oscillations begin during the matter-dominated era, late oscillation models, in which oscillations begin after scalar-field domination, and non-oscillating models. We examine a representative set of models (those with power-law potentials) and determine the parameter range giving acceptable agreement with the supernova observations. We show that a subset of all three classes of models can be consistent with the observational data.
The fact that fast oscillating homogeneous scalar fields behave as perfect fluids in average and their intrinsic isotropy have made these models very fruitful in cosmology. In this work we will analyse the perturbations dynamics in these theories ass uming general power law potentials $V(phi)=lambda vertphivert^{n}/n$. At leading order in the wavenumber expansion, a simple expression for the effective sound speed of perturbations is obtained $c_{text{eff}}^2 = omega=(n-2)/(n+2)$ with $omega$ the effective equation of state. We also obtain the first order correction in $k^2/omega_{text{eff}}^2$, when the wavenumber $k$ of the perturbations is much smaller than the background oscillation frequency, $omega_{text{eff}}$. For the standard massive case we have also analysed general anharmonic contributions to the effective sound speed. These results are reached through a perturbed version of the generalized virial theorem and also studying the exact system both in the super-Hubble limit, deriving the natural ansatz for $deltaphi$; and for sub-Hubble modes, exploiting Floquets theorem.
By revising the application of the open quantum system approach to the early universe and extending it to the conditions beyond the Markovian approximation, we obtain a new non-Markovian quantum Boltzmann equation. Throughout the paper, we also devel op an extension of the quantum Boltzmann equation to describe the processes that are irreversible at the macroscopic level. This new kinetic equation is, in principle, applicable to a wide variety of processes in the early universe. For instance, using this equation one can accurately study the microscopic influence of a cosmic environment on a system of cosmic background photons or stochastic gravitational waves. In this paper, we apply the non-Markovian quantum Boltzmann equation to study the damping of gravitational waves propagating in a medium consisting of decoupled ultra-relativistic neutrinos. For such a system, we study the time evolution of the intensity and the polarization of the gravitational waves. It is shown that, in contrast to intensity and linear polarization which are damped, the circular polarization (V-mode) of the gravitational wave (if present) is amplified by propagating through such a medium.
