A physical nonlinear dynamical model of a laser diode is considered. We propose a feed-forward control scheme based on differential flatness for the design of input-current modulations to compensate diode distortions. The goal is to transform without distortion a radio-frequency current modulation into a light modulation leaving the laser-diode and entering an optic fiber. We prove that standard physical dynamical models based on dynamical electron and photons balance are flat systems when the current is considered as control input, the flat output being the photon number (proportional to the light power). We prove that input-current is an affine map of the flat output, its logarithm and their time-derivatives up to order two. When the flat output is an almost harmonic signal with slowly varying amplitude and phase, these derivatives admit precise analytic approximations. It is then possible to design simple analogue electronic circuits to code approximations of the nonlinear computations required by our flatness-based approach. Simulations with the parameters of a commercial diode illustrate the practical interest of this pre-compensation scheme and its robustness versus modelling and analogue implementation errors.

We study when $R to S$ has the property that prime ideals of $R$ extend to prime ideals or the unit ideal of $S$, and the situation where this property continues to hold after adjoining the same indeterminates to both rings. We prove that if $R$ is r educed, every maximal ideal of $R$ contains only finitely many minimal primes of $R$, and prime ideals of $R[X_1,dots,X_n]$ extend to prime ideals of $S[X_1,dots,X_n]$ for all $n$, then $S$ is flat over $R$. We give a counterexample to flatness over a reduced quasilocal ring $R$ with infinitely many minimal primes by constructing a non-flat $R$-module $M$ such that $M = PM$ for every minimal prime $P$ of $R$. We study the notion of intersection flatness and use it to prove that in certain graded cases it suffices to examine just one closed fiber to prove the stable prime extension property.
We demonstrate simple optical frequency combs based on semiconductor quantum well laser diodes. The frequency comb spectrum can be tailored by choice of material properties and quantum-well widths, providing spectral flexibility. Finally, we demonstr ate the mutual coherence of these devices by using two frequency combs on the same device to generate a radio-frequency dual comb spectrum.
In the present study, we developed a fabrication process of an electrically driven single-photon LED based on InP QDs emitting in the red spectral range, the wavelength of interest coinciding with the high efficiency window of Si APDs. A deterministi c lithography technique allowed for the pre-selection of a suitable QD, here exclusively operated under electrical carrier injection. The final device was characterized under micro-electroluminescence in direct current, as well as in pulsed excitation mode. In particular, under pulsed excitation of one device, single-photon emission of a spectral line, identified as an exciton, has been observed with $g^{(2)}_mathrm{raw}(0)=0.42pm0.02$, where the non-zero $g^{(2)}$-value is mainly caused by background contribution in the spectrum and re-excitation processes due to the electrical pulse length. The obtained results constitute an important step forward in the fabrication of electrically driven single-photon sources, where deterministic lithography techniques can be used to sensibly improve the device performances. In principle, the developed process can be extended to any desired emitter wavelength above $600,mathrm{nm}$ up to the telecom bands.
We demonstrate injection-locking of 120mW laser diodes operating at 397nm. We achieve stable operation with injection powers of ~100uW and a slave laser output power of up to 110mW. We investigate the spectral purity of the slave laser light via phot on scattering experiments on a single trapped Ca40 ion. We show that it is possible to achieve a scattering rate indistinguishable from that of monochromatic light by filtering the laser light with a diffraction grating to remove amplified spontaneous emission.
He-Ne ring laser gyroscopes are, at present, the most precise devices for absolute angular velocity measurements. Limitations to their performance come from the non--linear dynamics of the laser. Following the Lamb semi-classical theory, we find a se t of critical parameters affecting the time stability of the system. We propose a method for estimating the long term drift of the laser parameters and for filtering out the laser dynamics effects from the rotation measurement. The parameter estimation procedure, based on the perturbative solutions of the laser dynamics, allow us to apply Kalman Filter theory for the estimation of the angular velocity. Results of a comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation and results of a preliminary analysis on experimental data from the ring laser prototype G-Pisa are shown and discussed.
