In this paper we demonstrate that the inevitable action of the environment can be substantially weakened when considering appropriate nonstationary quantum systems. Beyond protecting quantum states against decoherence, an oscillating frequency can be engineered to make the system-reservoir coupling almost negligible. Therefore, differently from previously-reported protecting schemes, our technique does not require a previous knowledge of the state to be protected. We show, in the domain of cavity quantum electrodynamics, how to engineer such a nonstationary cavity mode through its dispersive interaction with a driven two-level atom.

We extend the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to open quantum systems which exhibit multi-channel coupling to a harmonic oscillator reservoir. Open quantum systems which have multi-channel reservoir coupling are those in which ca nonical transformation of reservoir modes cannot reduce the number of reservoir operators appearing in the interaction Hamiltonian to one. We show that the non-Markovian QSD equation for multi-channel reservoir coupling can, in some cases, lead to an exact master equation which we derive. We then derive the exact master equation for the three-level system in a vee-type configuration which has multi-channel reservoir coupling and give the analytical solution. Finally, we examine the evolution of the three-level vee-type system with generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck reservoir correlations numerically.
We establish the potential of continuous-variable Gaussian states of linear dynamical systems for machine learning tasks. Specifically, we consider reservoir computing, an efficient framework for online time series processing. As a reservoir we consi der a quantum harmonic network modeling e.g. linear quantum optical systems. We prove that unlike universal quantum computing, universal reservoir computing can be achieved without non-Gaussian resources. We find that encoding the input time series into Gaussian states is both a source and a means to tune the nonlinearity of the overall input-output map. We further show that the full potential of the proposed model can be reached by encoding to quantum fluctuations, such as squeezed vacuum, instead of classical intense fields or thermal fluctuations. Our results introduce a new research paradigm for reservoir computing harnessing the dynamics of a quantum system and the engineering of Gaussian quantum states, pushing both fields into a new direction.
We study the stationary and nonstationary measurement of a classical force driving a mechanical oscillator coupled to an electromagnetic cavity under two-tone driving. For this purpose, we develop a theoretical framework based on the signal-to-noise ratio to quantify the sensitivity of linear spectral measurements. Then, we consider stationary force sensing and study the necessary conditions to minimise the added force noise. We find that imprecision noise and back-action noise can be arbitrarily suppressed by manipulating the amplitudes of the input coherent fields, however, the force noise power spectral density cannot be reduced below the level of thermal fluctuations. Therefore, we consider a nonstationary protocol that involves non-thermal dissipative state preparation followed by a finite time measurement, which allows one to perform measurements with a signal-to-noise much greater than the maximum possible in a stationary measurement scenario. We analyse two different measurement schemes in the nonstationary transient regime, a back-action evading measurement, which implies modifying the drive asymmetry configuration upon arrival of the force, and a nonstationary measurement that leaves the drive asymmetry configuration unchanged. Conditions for optimal force noise sensitivity are determined, and the corresponding force noise power spectral densities are calculated.
We show a quantum boost in the output power of a heat engine formed by a two-level system coupled to a single-mode cavity. The key ingredient here is the nonstationary regime achieved when some system parameter (atomic transition frequency, in our ca se) is subjected to a time-dependent perturbative modulation that is precisely tuned at certain frequencies. We discuss how the extracted power can lead to amplification of the external driving field. Quantum power boost is found both in the nonstationary Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi models, indicating that our predictions can be experimentally tested in circuit quantum electrodynamics setups.
Abstract Reservoir engineering is an important tool for quantum information science and quantum thermodynamics since it allows for preparing and/or protecting special quantum states of single or multipartite systems or to investigate fundamental ques tions of the thermodynamics as quantum thermal machines and their efficiencies. Here we employ this technique to engineer reservoirs with arbitrary (effective) negative and positive temperatures for a single spin system. To this end, we firstly engineer an appropriate interaction between a qubit system, a carbon nuclear spin, to a fermionic reservoir, in our case a large number of hydrogen nuclear spins that acts as the spins bath. This carbon-hydrogen structure is present in a polycrystalline adamantane, which was used in our experimental setup. The required interaction engineering is achieved by applying a specific sequence of radio-frequency pulses using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), while the temperature of the bath can be controlled by appropriate preparation of the initial hydrogen nuclear spin state, being the predicted results in very good agreement with the experimental data. As an application we implemented a single qubit quantum thermal machine which operates at a single reservoir at effective negative temperature whose efficiency is always 100%, independent of the unitary transformation performed on the qubit system, as long as it changes the qubit state.
