A measure of nonclassicality of quantum states based on the volume of the negative part of the Wigner function is proposed. We analyze this quantity for Fock states, squeezed displaced Fock states and cat-like states defined as coherent superposition of two Gaussian wave packets.

The Wigner function of a finite-dimensional system can be constructed via dual pairing of a density matrix with the Stratonovich-Weyl kernel. Following Kenfack and $dot{text{Z}}$yczkowski, we consider the indicator of nonclassicality of a finite-dime nsional quantum system which depends on the volume of the negative part of the Wigner function. This indicator is defined over the unitary non-equivalent classes of quantum states, i.e. represents an invariant, but since for a given quantum system there is no unique Wigner function it turns to be sensitive to the choice of representations for the Wigner function. Based on the explicit parameterization of the moduli space of the Wigner functions, we compute the corresponding Kenfack-$dot{text{Z}}$yczkowski indicators of a 3-level system for degenerate, unitary non-equivalent Stratonovich-Weyl kernels.
Contextuality and negativity of the Wigner function are two notions of non-classicality for quantum systems. Howard, Wallman, Veitch and Emerson proved recently that these two notions coincide for qudits in odd prime dimension. This equivalence is pa rticularly important since it promotes contextuality as a ressource that magic states must possess in order to allow for a quantum speed-up. We propose a simple proof of the equivalence between contextuality and negativity of the Wigner function based on character theory. This simplified approach allows us to generalize this equivalence to multiple qudits and to any qudit system of odd local dimension.
We describe a scheme of quantum computation with magic states on qubits for which contextuality is a necessary resource possessed by the magic states. More generally, we establish contextuality as a necessary resource for all schemes of quantum compu tation with magic states on qubits that satisfy three simple postulates. Furthermore, we identify stringent consistency conditions on such computational schemes, revealing the general structure by which negativity of Wigner functions, hardness of classical simulation of the computation, and contextuality are connected.
We describe a universal scheme of quantum computation by state injection on rebits (states with real density matrices). For this scheme, we establish contextuality and Wigner function negativity as computational resources, extending results of [M. Ho ward et al., Nature 510, 351--355 (2014)] to two-level systems. For this purpose, we define a Wigner function suited to systems of $n$ rebits, and prove a corresponding discrete Hudsons theorem. We introduce contextuality witnesses for rebit states, and discuss the compatibility of our result with state-independent contextuality.
We propose a hierachy of nonclassicality criteria in phase space. Our formalism covers the negativity in phase space as a special case and further adresses nonclassicality for quantum states with positive phase-space distributions. Remarkably, it ena bles us to detect every nonclassical Gaussian state and every finite dimensional state in Fock basis by looking into only three phase-space points. Furthermore, our approach provides an experimentally accessible lower bound for the nonclassicality measure based on trace distance. We also extend our method to detecting genuine quantum non-Gaussianity of a state with a non-negative Wigner function. We finally establish our formalism by employing generalized quasiprobability distributions to demonstrate its power for a practical test using an on-off detector array.
