The standard and renormalized coupled cluster methods with singles, doubles, and noniterative triples and their generalizations to excited states, based on the equation of motion coupled cluster approach, are applied to the He-4 and O-16 nuclei. A comparison of coupled cluster results with the results of the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the same model space shows that the quantum chemistry inspired coupled cluster approximations provide an excellent description of ground and excited states of nuclei. The bulk of the correlation effects is obtained at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level. Triples, treated noniteratively, provide the virtually exact description.

Emergent properties such as nuclear saturation and deformation, and the effects on shell structure due to the proximity of the scattering continuum and particle decay channels are fascinating phenomena in atomic nuclei. In recent years, ab initio app roaches to nuclei have taken the first steps towards tackling the computational challenge of describing these phenomena from Hamiltonians with microscopic degrees of freedom. This endeavor is now possible due to ideas from effective field theories, novel optimization strategies for nuclear interactions, ab initio methods exhibiting a soft scaling with mass number, and ever-increasing computational power. This paper reviews some of the recent accomplishments. We also present new results. The recently optimized chiral interaction NNLO$_{rm sat}$ is shown to provide an accurate description of both charge radii and binding energies in selected light- and medium-mass nuclei up to $^{56}$Ni. We derive an efficient scheme for including continuum effects in coupled-cluster computations of nuclei based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, and present new results for unbound states in the neutron-rich isotopes of oxygen and calcium. The coupling to the continuum impacts the energies of the $J^pi = {1/2}^-,{3/2}^-,{7/2}^-,{3/2}^+$ states in $^{17,23,25}$O, and - contrary to naive shell-model expectations - the level ordering of the $J^pi = {3/2}^+,{5/2}^+,{9/2}^+$ states in $^{53,55,61}$Ca.
In the past decade, coupled-cluster theory has seen a renaissance in nuclear physics, with computations of neutron-rich and medium-mass nuclei. The method is efficient for nuclei with product-state references, and it describes many aspects of weakly bound and unbound nuclei. This report reviews the technical and conceptual developments of this method in nuclear physics, and the results of coupled-cluster calculations for nucleonic matter, and for exotic isotopes of helium, oxygen, calcium, and some of their neighbors.
We investigate properties of bound and resonance states in the $_{Lambda}^{9}$Be nucleus. To reveal the nature of these states, we use a three-cluster $2alpha+Lambda$ microscopic model. The model incorporates Gaussian and oscillator basis functions a nd reduces a three-cluster Schr{o}dinger equation to a two-body like many-channel problem with the two-cluster subsystems ($_{Lambda}^{5}$He and $^8$Be) being in a bound or a pseudo-bound state. Influence of the cluster polarization on the energy and widths of resonance states in $_{Lambda}^{9}$Be and on elastic and inelastic $_{Lambda}^{5}$He+$alpha$ scattering is analyzed.
We present the first Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum that simultaneously correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a single framework. At the core of our analysis is a symmetry-prese rving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction. In comparison with relevant quantities the root-mean-square-relative-error/degree-of freedom is 13%. Notable amongst our results is agreement between the computed baryon masses and the bare masses employed in modern dynamical coupled-channels models of pion-nucleon reactions. Our analysis provides insight into numerous aspects of baryon structure; e.g., relationships between the nucleon and Delta masses and those of the dressed-quark and diquark correlations they contain.
We use coupled-cluster theory and nuclear interactions from chiral effective field theory to compute the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca. Benchmarks with the no-core shell model in several light nuclei infor m us about the accuracy of our approach. For $^{48}$Ca we find a relatively small matrix element. We also compute the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca with a quenching factor deduced from two-body currents in recent ab-initio calculation of the Ikeda sum-rule in $^{48}$Ca [Gysbers et al., Nature Physics 15, 428-431 (2019)].
