We describe diffractive deeply inelastic scattering in terms of diffractive parton distributions. We investigate these distributions in a hamiltonian formulation that emphasizes the spacetime picture of diffraction scattering. For hadronic systems with small transverse size, diffraction occurs predominantly at short distances and the diffractive parton distributions can be studied by perturbative methods. For realistic, large-size systems we discuss the possibility that diffractive parton distributions are controlled essentially by semihard physics at a scale of nonperturbative origin of the order of a GeV. We find that this possibility accounts for two important qualitative aspects of the diffractive data from HERA: the flat behavior in beta and the delay in the fall-off with Q^2.

We discuss recent theoretical results on diffractive deeply inelastic scattering, focusing on the partonic picture of diffraction in configuration space and the predictions for the beta behavior and the scaling violation.
We describe the current status of the diffractive vector meson production calculations within the k_t-factorization approach. Since the amplitude of the vector meson production off a proton is expressed via the differential gluon structure function ( DGSF), we take a closer look at the latter and present results of our new improved determination of the DGSF from the structure function F_2p. Having determined the differential glue, we proceed to the k_t-factorization results for the production of various vector mesons. We argue that the properties of the vector meson production can reveal the internal spin-angular and radial structure of the vector meson.
We study exclusive charmonium production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions within the dipole picture. The mass spectrum and light-front wavefunctions of charmonium are obtained from the basis light-fro nt quantization approach, using the one-gluon exchange interaction plus a confining potential inspired by light-front holography. We apply these light-front wavefunctions to exclusive charmonium production. The resulting cross sections are in reasonable agreement with electron-proton collision data at HERA and ultra-peripheral nucleus collision measurements at RHIC and LHC. The charmonium cross-section has model dependence on the dipole model. We observe that the cross-section ratio of excited states to the ground state has a weaker dependence than the cross-section itself. We suggest that measurements of excited states of heavy quarkonium production in future electron-ion collision experiments will impose rigorous constraints on heavy quarkonium light-front wavefunctions, thus improving our understanding of meson structure, which eventually will help us develop a precise description of the gluon distribution function in the small-$x$ regime.

We study transverse-momentum-dependent factorization at twist-3 for Drell-Yan processes. The factorization can be derived straightforwardly at leading order of $alpha_s$. But at this order we find that light-cone singularities already exist and effec ts of soft gluons are not correctly factorized. We regularize the singularities with gauge links off the light-cone and introduce a soft factor to factorize the effects of soft gluons. Interestingly, the soft factor must be included in the definition of subtracted TMD parton distributions to correctly factorize the effects of soft gluons. We derive the Collins-Soper equation for one of twist-3 TMD parton distributions. The equation can be useful for resummation of large logarithms terms appearing in the corresponding structure function in collinear factorization. However, the derived equation is nonhomogeneous. This will make the resummation complicated.
