Assuming a tricritical point of the two--flavor QCD in the space of temperature, baryon number chemical potential and quark mass, we study the change of the associated soft mode along the critical line within the Ginzburg--Landau approach and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The ordering density along the chiral critical line is the scalar density whereas a linear combination of the scalar, baryon number and energy densities becomes the proper ordering density along the critical line with finite quark masses. It is shown that the critical eigenmode shifts from the sigma--like fluctuation of the scalar density to a hydrodynamic mode at the tricritical point, where we have two ordering densities, the scalar density and a linear combination of the baryon number and energy densities. We argue that appearance of the critical eigenmode with hydrodynamic character is a logical consequence of divergent susceptibilities of the conserved densities.

We compute the homogeneous limit of non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a phenomenologically realistic Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model for the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) that is able to: i) {it quantitatively} describe state-o f-the-art lattice results for the QCD equation of state and higher order baryon susceptibilities with $2+1$ flavors and physical quark masses up to highest values of the baryon chemical potential currently reached in lattice simulations; ii) describe the nearly perfect fluidity of the strongly coupled QGP produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions; iii) give a very good description of the bulk viscosity extracted via some recent Bayesian analyzes of hydrodynamical descriptions of heavy ion experimental data. This EMD model has been recently used to predict the location of the QCD critical point in the QCD phase diagram, which was found to be within the reach of upcoming low energy heavy ion collisions. The lowest quasinormal modes of the $SO(3)$ rotationally invariant quintuplet, triplet, and singlet channels evaluated in the present work provide upper bounds for characteristic equilibration times describing how fast the dense medium returns to thermal equilibrium after being subjected to small disturbances. We find that the equilibration times in the different channels come closer to each other at high temperatures, although being well separated at the critical point. Moreover, in most cases, these equilibration times decrease with increasing baryon chemical potential while keeping temperature fixed.

We study topological gapless modes in relativistic hydrodynamics by weakly breaking the conservation of energy momentum tensor. Several systems have been found to have topologically nontrivial crossing nodes in the spectrum of hydrodynamic modes and some of them are only topologically nontrivial with the protection of certain spacetime symmetries. The nontrivial topology for all these systems is further confirmed from the existence of undetermined Berry phases. Associated transport properties and second order effects have also been studied for these systems. The non-conservation terms of the energy momentum tensor could come from an external effective symmetric tensor matter field or a gravitational field which could be generated by a specific coordinate transformation from the flat spacetime. Finally we introduce a possible holographic realization of one of these systems. We propose a new method to calculate the holographic Ward identities for the energy momentum tensor without calculating out all components of the Green functions and match the Ward identities of both sides.

The two-dimensional Ashkin-Teller model provides the simplest example of a statistical system exhibiting a line of critical points along which the critical exponents vary continously. The scaling limit of both the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phase s separated by the critical line are described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory in a given range of its dimensionless coupling. After computing the relevant matrix elements of the order and disorder operators in this integrable field theory, we determine the universal amplitude ratios along the critical line within the two-particle approximation in the form factor approach.
We study the behavior of quasinormal modes in a top-down holographic dual corresponding to a strongly coupled $mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills plasma charged under a $U(1)$ subgroup of the global $SU(4)$ R-symmetry. In particular, we analyze the spe ctra of quasinormal modes in the external scalar and vector diffusion channels near the critical point and obtain the behavior of the characteristic equilibration times of the plasma as the system evolves towards the critical point of its phase diagram. Except close to the critical point, we observe that by increasing the chemical potential one generally increases the damping rate of the quasinormal modes, which leads to a reduction of the characteristic equilibration times in the dual strongly coupled plasma. However, as one approaches the critical point the typical equilibration time (as estimated from the lowest non-hydrodynamic quasinormal mode frequency) increases, although remaining finite, while its derivative with respect to the chemical potential diverges with exponent -1/2. We also find a purely imaginary non-hydrodynamical mode in the vector diffusion channel at nonzero chemical potential which dictates the equilibration time in this channel near the critical point.

We investigate the time-dependent perturbations of strongly coupled $mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory at finite temperature and finite chemical potential with a second order phase transition. This theory is modelled by a top-down Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton d escription which is a consistent truncation of the dimensional reduction of type IIB string theory on AdS$_5times$S$^5$. We focus on spin-1 and spin-2 sectors of perturbations and compute the linearized hydrodynamic transport coefficients up to the third order in gradient expansion. We also determine the radius of convergence of the hydrodynamic mode in spin-1 sector and the lowest non-hydrodynamic modes in spin-2 sector. Analytically, we find that all the hydrodynamic quantities have the same critical exponent near the critical point $theta = 1/2$. Moreover, we establish a relation between symmetry enhancement of the underlying theory and vanishing the only third order hydrodynamic transport coefficient $theta_1$, which appears in the shear dispersion relation of a conformal theory on a flat background.
