A new mechanism for exciton lasing in ZnSe/ZnCdSe quantum wells is proposed. Lasing, occurring below the lowest exciton line, may be associated with a BCS-like condensed (coherent) exciton state. This state is most stable at low temperatures for densities in the transition region separating the exciton Bose gas and the coherent exciton state. Calculations show the gain region to lie below the exciton line and to be separated from the absorption regime by a transparency region of width, for example, about 80 meV for a 90 Angstrom ZnSe/Zn_(0.75)Cd_(0.25)Se quantum well. Experimental observation of the transparency region using differential spectroscopy would confirm this picture.

We present a detailed investigation of excitonic absorption in $Zn_{0.69}Cd_{0.31}Se/ZnSe$ quantum wells under the application of a perpendicular magnetic field. The large energy separation between heavy- and light-hole excitons allows us to clearly resolve and identify magneto-excitonic absorption resonant with the continuum edge of the 1S heavy-hole exciton. Experimental values of the exciton binding energy are compared with results of a theoretical model that includes the exciton-phonon interaction. The remarkable agreemeent found unambiguously indicates the predominant polaronic character of excitons in ZnSe-based heterostructures.

Temperature dependence and recombination behavior of trapped charge carriers in ZnCdSe/ZnSe multiple quantum wells are investigated employing surface acoustic waves. These weakly perturb the carrier system, but remain highly sensitive even at small c onductivities. Using this non-invasive probe we are able to detect persistent photoconductivity minutes after optical excitation. Measurement of exciting photon energies, the temperature dependence and ability to quench the conductivity with energies lower than the bandgap, support the notion of spatial separation of electrons and holes in the wells, due to random local potential fluctuations possibly induced by compositional fluctuations.
Kagome lattices supporting Dirac cone and flatband dispersions are well known as a highly frustrated, two-dimensional lattice system. Particularly the flatbands therein are attracting continuous interest based on their link to topological order, corr elations and frustration. In this work, we realize coupled microcavity implementations of Kagome lattices hosting exciton-polariton quantum fluids of light. We demonstrate precise control over the dispersiveness of the flatband as well as selective condensation of exciton-polaritons into the flatband. Subsequently, we focus on the spatial and temporal coherence properties of the laser-like emission from these polariton condensates that are closely connected to the flatband nature of the system. Notably, we find a drastic increase in coherence time due to the localization of flatband condensates. Our work illustrates the outstanding suitability of the exciton-polariton system for detailed studies of flatband states as a platform for microlaser arrays in compact localized states, including strong interactions, topology and non-linearity.
Excitons and charged excitons (trions) are investigated in ZnSe-based quantum well structures with (Zn,Be,Mg)Se and (Zn,Mg)(S,Se) barriers by means of magneto-optical spectroscopy. Binding energies of negatively () and positively (X+) charged exciton s are measured as functions of quantum well width, free carrier density and in external magnetic fields up to 47 T. The binding energy of shows a strong increase from 1.4 to 8.9 meV with decreasing quantum well width from 190 to 29 A. The binding energies of X+ are about 25% smaller than the binding energy in the same structures. The magnetic field behavior of and X+ binding energies differ qualitatively. With growing magnetic field strength, increases its binding energy by 35-150%, while for X+ it decreases by 25%. Zeeman spin splittings and oscillator strengths of excitons and trions are measured and discussed.
Excitons bound to flourine atoms in ZnSe have the potential for several quantum optical applications. Examples include optically accessible quantum memories for quantum information processing and lasing without inversion. These applications require t he bound-exciton transitions to be coupled to cavities with high cooperativity factors, which results in the experimental observation of low-threshold lasing. We report such lasing from fluorine-doped ZnSe quantum wells in 3 and 6 micron microdisk cavities. Photoluminescence and selective photoluminescence spectroscopy confirm that the lasing is due to bound-exciton transitions.
