We use a model of hard-core bosons to describe a SQUID built with two crystals of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-superconductors with orientations (100) and (110). Across the two faceted (100)/(110) interfaces, the structure of the superconducting order parameter leads to an alternating sign of the local Josephson coupling, and the possibility of quartet formation. Using a mapping of the boson model to an $XXZ$ model, we calculate numerically the energy of the system as a function of the applied magnetic flux, finding signals of $hc/4e$ oscillations in a certain region of parameters. This region has a large overlap to that at which binding of bosons exists.

We analyze the crossover from an hc/e-periodicity of the persistent current in flux threaded clean metallic rings towards an hc/2e-flux periodicity of the supercurrent upon entering the superconducting state. On the basis of a model calculation for a one-dimensional ring we identify the underlying mechanism, which balances the hc/e versus the hc/2e periodic components of the current density. When the ring circumference exceeds the coherence length of the superconductor, the flux dependence is strictly hc/2e periodic. Further, we develop a multi-channel model which reduces the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations to a one-dimensional differential equation for the radial component of the wave function. The discretization of this differential equation introduces transverse channels, whose number scales with the thickness of the ring. The periodicity crossover is analyzed close the critical temperature.
The current-voltage characteristics of Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are known to modulate as a function of applied magnetic field with a period of one flux quantum $Phi_0=h$/2e. Here we report on the fabrication and propertie s of SQUIDs modulating with a period of $1/2timesPhi_0$. The characteristics of these bicrystal SQUIDs are consistent with either a strong sin(2$phi$) component of the current-phase relation of the Josephson current, or with an interaction between the Cooper-pairs, causing an admixture of quartets to the condensate.

The low temperature surface resistance R_s of d-wave superconductors is calculated as function of frequency assuming normal state quasiparticle mean free paths l in excess of the penetration depth. Results depend strongly on the geometric configurati on. In the clean limit, two contributions to R_s with different temperature dependencies are identified: photon absorption by quasiparticles and pair breaking. The size of nonlocal corrections, which can be positive or negative depending on frequency decreases for given l as the scattering phase shift delta_N is increased. However, except in the unitarity limit delta_N = 0.5 pi, nonlocal effects should be observable.
We calculate the density of states of a disordered inhomogeneous d-wave superconductor in a magnetic field. The field-induced vortices are assumed to be pinned at random positions and the effects of the scattering of the quasi-particles off the vorti ces are taken into account using the singular gauge transformation of Franz and Tesanovic. We find two regimes for the density of states: at very low energies the density of states follows a law rho(epsilon) sim rho_0 + |epsilon|^{alpha} where the exponent is close to 1. A good fit of the density of states is obtained at higher energies, excluding a narrow region around the origin, with a similar power law energy dependence but with alpha close to 2. Both at low and at higher energies rho_0 scales with the inverse of the magnetic length (sqrt{B}).
We study the effect of dissipation on quantum phase fluctuations in d-wave superconductors. Dissipation, arising from a nonzero low frequency optical conductivity which has been measured in experiments below $T_c$, has two effects: (1) a reduction of zero point phase fluctuations, and (2) a reduction of the temperature at which one crosses over to classical thermal fluctuations. For parameter values relevant to the cuprates, we show that the crossover temperature is still too large for classical phase fluctuations to play a significant role at low temperature. Quasiparticles are thus crucial in determining the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane superfluid stiffness. Thermal phase fluctuations become important at higher temperatures and play a role near $T_c$.
