The filling behavior of a room temperature solvent, perfluoromethylcyclohexane, in approximately 20 nm nanoporous alumina membranes was investigated in situ with small angle x-ray scattering. Adsorption in the pores was controlled reversibly by varying the chemical potential between the sample and a liquid reservoir via a thermal offset, $Delta$T. The system exhibited a pronounced hysteretic capillary filling transition as liquid was condensed into the nanopores. These results are compared with Kelvin-Cohan theory, with a modified Derjaguin approximation, as well as with predictions by Cole and Saam.

Large area nickel antidot arrays with density up to 10^10 /cm^2 have been fabricated by depositing nickel onto anodic aluminum oxide membranes that contain lattices of nanopores. Electron microscopy images show a high degree of order of the antidot a rrays. Various sizes and shapes of the antidots were observed with increasing thickness of the deposited nickel. New features appear in the antidot arrays in both magnetization and transport measurements when the external magnetic field is parallel to the current direction, including an enhancement and a nonmonotonous field dependence of the magnetoresistance, larger values of the coercive field and remanence moment, and smaller saturation field.
We show how the capillary filling of microchannels is affected by posts or ridges on the sides of the channels. Ridges perpendicular to the flow direction introduce contact line pinning which slows, or sometimes prevents, filling; whereas ridges para llel to the flow provide extra surface which may enhances filling. Patterning the microchannel surface with square posts has little effect on the ability of a channel to fill for equilibrium contact angle $theta_e lesssim 30^{mathrm{o}}$. For $theta_e gtrsim 60^{mathrm{o}}$, however, even a small number of posts can pin the advancing liquid front.
The motion of an air-fluid interface through an irregularly coated capillary is studied by analysing the Lucas-Washburn equation with a random capillary force. The pinning probability goes from zero to a maximum value, as the interface slows down. Un der a critical velocity, the distribution of waiting times $tau$ displays a power-law tail $sim tau^{-2}$ which corresponds to a strongly intermittent dynamics, also observed in experiments. We elaborate a procedure to predict quantities of experimental interest, such as the average interface trajectory and the distribution of pinning lengths.
We investigate the dynamics of DNA translocation through a nanopore using 2D Langevin dynamics simulations, focusing on the dependence of the translocation dynamics on the details of DNA sequences. The DNA molecules studied in this work are built fro m two types of bases $A$ and $C$, which has been shown previously to have different interactions with the pore. We study DNA with repeating blocks $A_nC_n$ for various values of $n$, and find that the translocation time depends strongly on the {em block length} $2n$ as well as on the {em orientation} of which base entering the pore first. Thus, we demonstrate that the measurement of translocation dynamics of DNA through nanopore can yield detailed information about its structure. We have also found that the periodicity of the block sequences are contained in the periodicity of the residence time of the individual nucleotides inside the pore.
We investigate the dynamics of DNA translocation through a nanopore driven by an external force using Langevin dynamics simulations in two dimensions (2D) to study how the translocation dynamics depend on the details of the DNA sequences. We consider a coarse-grained model of DNA built from two bases $A$ and $C$, having different base-pore interactions, {textit e.g.}, a strong (weak) attractive force between the pore and the base $A$ ($C$) inside the pore. From a series of studies on hetero-DNAs with repeat units $A_mC_n$, we find that the translocation time decreases exponentially as a function of the volume fraction $f_C$ of the base $C$. %($epsilon_{pC} < epsilon_{pA}$). For longer $A$ sequences with $f_C le 0.5$, the translocation time strongly depends on the orientation of DNA, namely which base enters the pore first. Our studies clearly demonstrate that for a DNA of certain length $N$ with repeat units $A_mC_n$, the pattern exhibited by the waiting times of the individual bases and their periodicity can unambiguously determine the values of $m$, $n$ and $N$ respectively. Therefore, a prospective experimental realization of this phenomenon may lead to fast and efficient sequence detection technic.
