Window glass is a ternary mixture, while pyrex (after window glass, the most common form of commercial glass) is a quaternary. Building on our previous success in deriving the composition of window glass (sodium calcium silicate) without adjustable parameters, and borrowing from known reconstructed crystalline surfaces, we model pyrex as silica clusters with a specific ternary interface. Our global model explains the thermal expansivity contours of ternary sodium borosilicates, and it is consistent with the optimized resistance of pyrex to mechanical and thermal shocks. It suggests new directions for studying the nanoscopic structure of these remarkable materials.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations resolve the structure and dynamics of metallic glass Cu$_{100-x}$Hf$_{x}$ films and demonstrate STM control of aging at a metallic glass surface. Surface clusters exhibit heterogeneous hopping dynamics . Low Hf concentration films feature an aged surface of larger, slower clusters. Argon ion-sputtering destroys the aged configuration, yielding a surface in constant fluctuation. STM can locally restore the relaxed state, allowing for nanoscale lithographic definition of aged sections.
Absorption spectra of Ni$^{2+}$ ions in 22WO$_3$--78TeO$_2$ tungstate-tellurite glass were studied and Ni$^{2+}$ extinction coefficient spectral dependence was derived in the 450 -- 2700 nm wavelength range. Computer modeling of the glass structure p roved Ni$^{2+}$ ions to be in trigonal-distorted octahedral environment in the tungstate-tellurite glass. Tanabe-Sugano diagram for such an environment was calculated and good description of the observed spectrum of Ni$^{2+}$ ion was obtained. Basing on both absorption spectral range width and the extinction coefficient, nickel should be considered among the most strongly absorbing impurities in the tellurite glasses.
The results of XPS core-level and valence band measurements, photoluminescence spectra of a-SiO2 implanted by Zn-ions (E=30 keV, D=1*1017 cm^-2) and Density Functional Theory calculations of electronic structure as well as formation energies of struc tural defects in silica glass induced by Zn-ion implantation are presented. Both theory and experiment show that it is energetically more favorable for implanted zinc ions to occupy the interstitial positions instead of cation substitution. As a result, the Zn-ions embedded to interstitials, form chemical bonds with the surrounding oxygen atoms, formation ZnO-like nanoparticles and oxygen-deficient SiOx matrix. The subsequent thermal annealing at 900 0C (1 hr) strongly reduces the amount of ZnO nanoparticles and induces the formation of {alpha}-Zn2SiO4 phase which markedly enhances the green emission.

Using in situ low-energy electron microscopy and density functional theory, we studied the growth structure and work function of bilayer graphene on Pd(111). Low-energy electron diffraction analysis established that the two graphene layers have multi ple rotational orientations relative to each other and the substrate plane. We observed heterogeneous nucleation and simultaneous growth of multiple, faceted layers prior to the completion of second layer. We propose that the facetted shapes are due to the zigzag-terminated edges bounding graphene layers growing under the larger overlying layers. We also found that the work functions of bilayer graphene domains are higher than those of monolayer graphene, and depend sensitively on the orientations of both layers with respect to the substrate. Based on first-principles simulations, we attribute this behavior to oppositely oriented electrostatic dipoles at the graphene/Pd and graphene/graphene interfaces, whose strengths depend on the orientations of the two graphene layers.
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of Nd doped phosphate glasses have been studied before and after gamma irradiation in order to find the behavior of chemical bonds, which decide the structural changes in the glass samples. IR absorption spectra of these glasses are found dominated mainly by the characteristics phosphate groups, water (OH) present in the glass network as well as on the composition of glass matrix. The effects of gamma irradiation are observed in the form of bond breaking and possible re-arrangement of the bonding in the glass. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and XPS measurements show changes in the relative concentration of elements; particularly decrease in the concentration of oxygen in the glass samples after gamma irradiation, a possible source of oxygen vacancies. The decrease in the asymmetry in O 1s spectra after gamma irradiation indicates towards decrease in the concentration of bridging oxygen as a result of P-O-P bond breaking. Asymmetric profile of Nd 3d5/2peak after gamma irradiation is found to be due to conversion of Nd3+ to Nd2+ in the glass matrix.
