We report the synthesis of MnO2−delta microspheres using hydrothermal and conventional chemical reaction methods. The microspheres of MnO2−delta consist of nanowires having a diameter of 20-50 nm and a length of 2-8 micro m. The value of the oxygen vacancy delta estimated from the x-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) is 0.3. The magnetization versus temperature curve indicates a magnetic transition at about 13 K. It is found that a parasitic ferromagnetic component is imposed on the antiferromagnetic structure of MnO2−delta, which might result from distortion of the lattice structure due to oxygen vacancies. The magnetic transition temperature TN is about 10 K lower than that of the bulk MnO2 single crystal.

We have grown thin films of the Heusler compound Co_2FeSi by RF magnetron sputtering. On (100)-oriented MgO substrates we find fully epitaxial (100)-oriented and L2_1 ordered growth. On Al_2O_3 (11-20) substrates, the film growth is (110)-oriented, a nd several in-plane epitaxial domains are observed. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity shows a power law with an exponent of 7/2 at low temperatures. Investigation of the bulk magnetic properties reveals an extrapolated saturation magnetization of 5.0 mu_B/fu at 0 K. The films on Al_2O_3 show an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy, while the epitaxial films are magnetically isotropic in the plane. Measurements of the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism of the films allowed us to determine element specific magnetic moments. Finally we have measured the spin polarization at the surface region by spin-resolved near-threshold photoemission and found it strongly reduced in contrast to the expected bulk value of 100%. Possible reasons for the reduced magnetization are discussed.
The double perovskite Sr2CrReO6 is an interesting material for spintronics, showing ferrimagnetism up to 635 K with a predicted high spin polarization of about 86%. We fabricated Sr2CrReO6 epitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Phase-pure films with optimum crystallographic and magnetic properties were obtained by growing at a substrate temperature of 700 degree C in pure O2 of 6.6x10-4 mbar. The films are c-axis oriented, coherently strained, and show less than 20% anti-site defects. The magnetization curves reveal high saturation magnetization of 0.8 muB per formula unit and high coercivity of 1.1 T, as well as a strong magnetic anisotropy.
We present the synthesis of D0$_{22}$ Mn$_{3 - delta}$Ga ($delta$ = 0, 1) Heusler alloys by Spark Plasma Sintering method. The single phase Mn$_3$Ga (T$_mathrm{c}$ $simeq$ 780 K) is synthesized, while Mn$_2$Ga (T$_mathrm{c}$ $simeq$ 710 K) is found t o coexist with a near-stoichiometric room temperature paramagnetic Mn$_9$Ga$_5$~($approx$ 15 %) phase due to its lower formation energy, as confirmed from our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The alloys show hard magnetic behavior with large room temperature spontaneous magnetization m$_s$(80 kOe) = 1.63 (0.83) $mu_mathrm{B}$/f.u. and coercivity H$_mathrm{c}$ = 4.28 (3.35) kOe for Mn$_3$Ga (Mn$_2$Ga). The magnetic properties are further investigated till T$_mathrm{c}$ and the H$_mathrm{c}$ (T) analysis by Stoner-Wohlfarth model shows the nucleation mechanism for the magnetization reversal. The experimental results are well supported by DFT calculations, which reveal that the ground state of D0$_{22}$ Mn$_2$Ga is achieved by the removal of Mn-atoms from full Heusler Mn$_3$Ga structure in accordance with half Heusler alloy picture.
We have studied the magnetic properties of (GaMnAs)m/(GaAs)n superlattices with magnetic GaMnAs layers of thickness between 8 and 16 molecular layers (ML) (23-45 AA), and with nonmagnetic GaAs spacers from 4 ML to 10 ML (11-28 AA). While previous rep orts state that GaMnAs layers thinner than 50 AA are paramagnetic in the whole Mn composition range achievable using MBE growth (up to 8% Mn), we have found that short period superlattices exhibit a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition with a transition temperature which depends on both the thickness of the magnetic GaMnAs layer and the nonmagnetic GaAs spacer. The neutron scattering experiments have shown that the magnetic layers in superlattices are ferromagnetically coupled for both thin (below 50 AA) and thick (above 50 AA) GaMnAs layers.

The objective of this work is to study the magnetic properties of arrays of Ni-Fe nanowires electrodeposited in different template materials such as porous silicon, polycarbonate and alumina. Magnetic properties were studied as a function of template material, applied magnetic field (parallel and perpendicular) during deposition, wire length, as well as magnetic field orientation during measurement. The results show that application of magnetic field during deposition strongly influences the c-axis preferred orientation growth of Ni-Fe nanowires. The samples with magnetic field perpendicular to template plane during deposition exhibits strong perpendicular anisotropy with greatly enhanced coercivity and squareness ratio, particularly in Ni-Fe nanowires deposited in polycarbonate templates. In case of polycarbonate template, as magnetic field during deposition increases, both coercivity and squareness ratio also increase. The wire length dependence was also measured for polycarbonate templates. As wire length increases, coercivity and squareness ratio decrease, but saturation field increases. Such magnetic behavior (dependence on template material, magnetic field, wire length) can be qualitatively explained by preferential growth phenomena, dipolar interactio
