Superfluid to Mott-insulator transitions in atomic BEC in optical lattices are investigated for the case of number of atoms per site larger than one. To account for mean field repulsion between the atoms in each well, we construct an orthogonal set of Wannier functions. The resulting hopping amplitude and on-site interaction may be substantially different from those calculated with single-atom Wannier functions. As illustrations of the approach we consider lattices of various dimensionality and different mean occupations. We find that in three-dimensional optical lattices the correction to the critical lattice depth is significant to be measured experimentally even for small number of atoms. Finally, we discuss validity of the single band model.

We consider single particle Schrodinger operators with a gap in the en ergy spectrum. We construct a complete, orthonormal basis function set for the inv ariant space corresponding to the spectrum below the spectral gap, which are exponentially local ized a round a set of closed surfaces of monotonically increasing sizes. Estimates on the exponential dec ay rate and a discussion of the geometry of these surfaces is included.
It is shown that the critical temperature of gas Bose-Einstein condensation decreases in deepening periodic potential, in contrast to common regularity in a separate potential well. The physical explanation of this phenomenon is given. Characteristic scale of potential energies decaying the critical temperature is the quantum recoil energy of periodic potential. The theory represents an alternative and direct approach to the experimental results (C.Orzel et al Science 291, 2386 (2001); M.Greiner et al, Nature 415, 39 (2002)) obtained with BEC in optical lattices and treated as the phase squeezing or Mott transition processes.
We study the critical point for the emergence of coherence in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose gas with tuneable interactions. Over a wide range of interaction strengths we find excellent agreement with the classical-field predictions for the critical point of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superfluid transition. This allows us to quantitatively show, without any free parameters, that the interaction-driven BKT transition smoothly converges onto the purely quantum-statistical Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition in the limit of vanishing interactions.
An array of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice (Mott insulator) excited to a state where single electron wave-functions spatially overlap would represent a new and ideal platform to simulate exotic electronic many-body phenomena in the condensed p hase. However, this highly excited non-equilibrium system is expected to be so short-lived that it has eluded observation so far. Here, we demonstrate the first step toward its realization by exciting high-lying electronic (Rydberg) states of the atomic Mott insulator with a coherent ultrashort laser pulse. Beyond a threshold principal quantum number where Rydberg orbitals of neighboring lattice sites overlap with each other, the atoms efficiently undergo spontaneous Penning ionization resulting in a drastic change of ion-counting statistics, sharp increase of avalanche ionization and the formation of an ultracold plasma. These observations signal the actual creation of exotic electronic states with overlapping wave functions, which is further confirmed by a significant difference in ionization dynamics between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a Mott insulator.
We develop a strong coupling approach towards quantum magnetism in Mott insulators for Wannier obstructed bands. Despite the lack of Wannier orbitals, electrons can still singly occupy a set of exponentially-localized but nonorthogonal orbitals to mi nimize the repulsive interaction energy. We develop a systematic method to establish an effective spin model from the electron Hamiltonian using a diagrammatic approach. The nonorthogonality of the Mott basis gives rise to multiple new channels of spin-exchange (or permutation) interactions beyond Hartree-Fock and superexchange terms. We apply this approach to a Kagome lattice model of interacting electrons in Wannier obstructed bands (including both Chern bands and fragile topological bands). Due to the orbital nonorthogonality, as parameterized by the nearest neighbor orbital overlap $g$, this model exhibits stable ferromagnetism up to a finite bandwidth $Wsim U g$, where $U$ is the interaction strength. This provides an explanation for the experimentally observed robust ferromagnetism in Wannier obstructed bands. The effective spin model constructed through our approach also opens up the possibility for frustrated quantum magnetism around the ferromagnet-antiferromagnet crossover in Wannier obstructed bands.
