The Brillouin light scattering spectra of the o-terphenyl single crystal are compared with those of the liquid and the glass phases. This shows: i) the direct evidence of a fast relaxation at 5 GHz in both the single crystal and the glass; ii) a similar temperature dependence for the attenuation of the longitudinal sound waves in the single crystal and the glass; and iii) the absence of coupling between the fast relaxation and the transverse acoustic waves. These results allow us to assign such a relaxation to the coupling between the longitudinal acoustic waves and intra-molecular vibrations, and therefore to exclude any relationship between it and the glass transition.

Glasses are ubiquitous in daily life and technology. However the microscopic mechanisms generating this state of matter remain subject to debate: Glasses are considered either as merely hyper-viscous liquids or as resulting from a genuine thermodynam ic phase transition towards a rigid state. We show that third- and fifth-order susceptibilities provide a definite answer to this longstanding controversy. Performing the corresponding high-precision nonlinear dielectric experiments for supercooled glycerol and propylene carbonate, we find strong support for theories based upon thermodynamic amorphous order. Moreover, when lowering temperature, we find that the growing transient domains are compact - that is their fractal dimension d_f = 3. The glass transition may thus represent a class of critical phenomena different from canonical second-order phase transitions for which d_f < 3.
We presented that the relaxation of n coupling molecules in a molecular string exhibits n individual relaxation modes (RMs), each mode being characterized by a definite relaxation time and amplitude according to the string model. The n RMs behaving a single relaxation at high temperature, evolves to two relaxation species, at low temperature, with different temperature dependences for the respective relaxation times and amplitudes. Since the characteristics of the two relaxation species are in agreement with those exhibited by the universal alpha- and Johari-Goldstein (JG) beta-relaxations in glass dynamics, we provided a unified molecular level mechanism for these two processes.
The dynamic structure factor of lithium-diborate glass has been measured at several values of the momentum transfer $Q$ using high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Much attention has been devoted to the low $Q$-range, below the observed Ioffe-R egel crossover qco{}$simeq$ 2.1 nm$^{-1}$. We find that below qco{}, the linewidth of longitudinal acoustic waves increases with a high power of either $Q$, or of the frequency $Omega$, up to the crossover frequency OMco{} $simeq$ 9 meV that nearly coincides with the center of the boson peak. This new finding strongly supports the view that resonance and hybridization of acoustic waves with a distribution of rather local low frequency modes forming the boson peak is responsible for the end of acoustic branches in strong glasses. Further, we present high resolution Brillouin light-scattering data obtained at much lower frequencies on the same sample. These clearly rule out a simple $Omega^2$-dependence of the acoustic damping over the entire frequency range.
If quenched fast enough, a liquid is able to avoid crystallization and will remain in a metastable supercooled state down to the glass transition, with an important increase in viscosity upon further cooling. There are important differences in the wa y liquids relax as they approach the glass transition, rapid or slow variation in dynamic quantities under moderate temperature changes, and a simple means to quantify such variations is provided by the concept of fragility. Here, we report molecular dynamics simulations of a typical network-forming glass, Ge-Se, and find that the relaxation behaviour of the supercooled liquid is strongly correlated to the variation of rigidity with temperature and the spatial distribution of the corresponding topological constraints which, ultimately connect to fragility minima. This permits extending the fragility concept to aspects of topology/rigidity, and to the degree of homogeneity of the atomic-sale interactions for a variety of structural glasses.
We perform a theoretical study of the nonlinear optical response of an ultrathin film consisting of oriented linear aggregates. A single aggregate is described by a Frenkel exciton Hamiltonian with uncorrelated on-site disorder. The exciton wave func tions and energies are found exactly by numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. The principal restriction we impose is that only the optical transitions between the ground state and optically dominant states of the one-exciton manifold are considered, whereas transitions to other states, including those of higher exciton manifolds, are neglected. The optical dynamics of the system is treated within the framework of truncated optical Maxwell-Bloch equations in which the electric polarization is calculated by using a joint distribution of the transition frequency and the transition dipole moment of the optically dominant states. This function contains all the statistical information about these two quantities that govern the optical response, and is obtained numerically by sampling many disorder realizations. We derive a steady-state equation that establishes a relationship between the output and input intensities of the electric field and show that within a certain range of the parameter space this equation exhibits a three-valued solution for the output field. A time-domain analysis is employed to investigate the stability of different branches of the three-valued solutions and to get insight into switching times. We discuss the possibility to experimentally verify the bistable behavior.
