Interest in magnetic-tunnel junctions has prompted a re-examination of tunneling measurements through thin insulating films. In any study of metal-insulator-metal trilayers, one tries to eliminate the possibility of pinholes (small areas over which the thickness of the insulator goes to zero so that the upper and lower metals of the trilayer make direct contact). Recently, we have presented experimental evidence that ferromagnet-insulator-normal trilayers that appear from current-voltage plots to be pinhole-free may nonetheless in some cases harbor pinholes. Here, we show how pinholes may arise in a simple but realistic model of film deposition and that purely classical conduction through pinholes may mimic one aspect of tunneling, the exponential decay in current with insulating thickness.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) based tunnel junctions with turret/mesa structure have been investigated for different barrier materials (SrTiO3, NdGaO3, MgO, SiO2, and Al2O(3-x)). Junctions with a Ni counter electrode and an aluminium oxide barrier showed reprodu cibly a tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect at room temperature of up to 5% with almost ideal switching behavior. This number only partially reflects the intrinsic high spin polarization of Fe3O4. It is considerably decreased due to an additional series resistance within the junction. Only SiO2 and Al2O(3-x) barriers provide magnetically decoupled electrodes as necessary for sharp switching. The observed decrease of the TMR effect as a function of increasing temperature is due to a decrease in spin polarization and an increase in spin-scattering in the barrier. Among the oxide half-metals magnetite has the potential to enhance the performance of TMR based devices.
A simple, reliable method for preparation of bulk Cr tips for Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is proposed and its potentialities in performing high-quality and high-resolution STM and Spin Polarized-STM (SP-STM) are investigated. Cr tips show ato mic resolution on ordered surfaces. Contrary to what happens with conventional W tips, rest atoms of the Si(111)-7x7 reconstruction can be routinely observed, probably due to a different electronic structure of the tip apex. SP-STM measurements of the Cr(001) surface showing magnetic contrast are reported. Our results reveal that the peculiar properties of these tips can be suited in a number of STM experimental situations.
This review covers recent achievements in the studies of quantum properties of the novel carbon materials (fullerite C60 and bundles of single-walled nanotubes (SWNT)) saturated with such light-mass species as helium isotopes, the homonuclear molecul ar hydrogens, and neon. It is shown that even some heavy dopants demon-strate kinetic phenomena, in which coherent effects play an essential role. Two theoretical concepts are surveyed which have been suggested for the explanation of the anomalous phenomena in saturation kinetics and linear thermal expansion of doped C60. Most unusual effects have been also observed in the low-temperature radial ex-pansion of bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes saturated with the helium isotopes. First, it was shown that low-temperature radial expansion of pure SWNT is negative, i.e., a nanotube shrinks with warming. Second, sa-turation of SWNT bundles with the helium isotopes entails a huge increase of the negative expansion effect, when the dopant is He. So far, no detailed physical picture has been put forward. It is worth mentioning that the dynamics of a single helium atom on an isolated nanotube corresponds to that of a tight-bound quasiparticle with a band width of about 10 K.
We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some in-gap fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to study the local Eliashberg function and phonon spectra of the related transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) models are type of structural equation models, a theory-based approach to confirm the influence of a set of exogenous causal variables on the latent variable, and also the effect of the latent variable on o bserved indicator variables. In a common MIMIC model, multiple indicators reflect the underlying latent variables/factors, and the multiple causes (observed predictors) affect latent variables/factors. Basic assumptions of MIMIC are clearly violated in case of a variable being both an indicator and a cause, i.e. in the presence of reverse causality. Furthermore, the model is then unidentified. To resolve the situation, which can arise frequently, and as MIMIC estimation lacks closed form solutions for parameters we utilize a version of Bollens (1996) 2SLS estimator for structural equation models combined with Joreskog (1970)s method of the analysis of covariance structures to derive a new, 2SLS estimator for MIMIC models. Our 2SLS empirical estimation is based on static MIMIC specification but we point also to dynamic/error-correction MIMIC specification and 2SLS solution for it. We derive basic asymptotic theory for static 2SLS-MIMIC, present a simulation study and apply findings to an interesting empirical case of estimating precarious status of older workers (using dataset of Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) which solves an important issue of the definition of precarious work as a multidimensional concept, not modelled adequately so far.
