Of great recent interest in condensed matter physics are phenomena of coexistence of quantum and classical properties in the same material. Such duality occurs in certain mixed-spin antiferromagnets composed of quantum spin chains interacting through ``auxiliary magnetic ions. In this category are linear-chain rare earth nickelates that exhibit a seemingly paradoxical co-existence of long-range magnetic order and one-dimensional gapped quantum spin excitations at low temperatures. In the present paper we propose a unified physical description of these compounds, supported by recent neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering studies. Our basic concept is the effective separation between low-frequency classical and high-frequency quantum spin correlations. This interpretation enables experimental measurements of some previously inaccessible fundamental properties of quantum spin chains, and predicts new exotic magnetic excitations and mechanisms of long-range ordering in complex quantum magnets.

For a number of quantum critical points in one dimension quantum field theory has provided exact results for the scaling of spatial and temporal correlation functions. Experimental realizations of these models can be found in certain quasi one dimens ional antiferromagnetc materials. Measuring the predicted scaling laws experimentally presents formidable technical challenges. In many cases it only became possible recently, thanks to qualitative progress in the development of inelastic neutron scattering techniques and to the discovery of new model compounds. Here we review some of the recent experimental studies of this type.
By means of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, we follow the spin dynamics as a function of the applied magnetic field in two gapped one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets: the anisotropic spin-chain system NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 and the spin-ladd er system (C5H12N)2CuBr4. In both systems, spin excitations are confirmed to evolve from magnons in the gapped state to spinons in the gapples Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid state. In between, 1/T1 exhibits a pronounced, continuous variation, which is shown to scale in accordance with quantum criticality. We extract the critical exponent for 1/T1, compare it to the theory, and show that this behavior is identical in both studied systems, thus demonstrating the universality of quantum critical behavior.
The correlated spin dynamics and the temperature dependence of the correlation length $xi(T)$ in two-dimensional quantum ($S=1/2$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets (2DQHAF) on square lattice are discussed in the light of experimental results of proton spi n lattice relaxation in copper formiate tetradeuterate (CFTD). In this compound the exchange constant is much smaller than the one in recently studied 2DQHAF, such as La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Thus the spin dynamics can be probed in detail over a wider temperature range. The NMR relaxation rates turn out in excellent agreement with a theoretical mode-coupling calculation. The deduced temperature behavior of $xi(T)$ is in agreement with high-temperature expansions, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the pure quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Contrary to the predictions of the theories based on the Non-Linear $sigma$ Model, no evidence of crossover between different quantum regimes is observed.
We study the impact of next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) hopping on the low-energy collective excitations of strongly correlated doped antiferromagnetic cuprate spin chains. Specifically, we use exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method to study the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical spin and charge structure factors, and the Cu $L$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity of the doped $t$-$t^prime$-$J$ model for a set of $t^prime$ values. We find evidence for the breakdown of spin-charge separation as $|t^prime|$ increases and identify its fingerprints in the dynamical response functions. The inclusion of nnn hopping couples the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in the formation of a spin-polaron, where a ferromagnetic spin polarization cloud dresses the doped carrier. The spin-polaron manifests itself as additional spectral weight in the dynamical correlation functions, which appear simultaneously in the spin- and charge-sensitive channels. We also demonstrate that RIXS can provide a unique view of the spin-polaron, due to its sensitivity to both the spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Quasi-two dimensional itinerant fermions in the Anti-Ferro-Magnetic (AFM) quantum-critical region of their phase diagram, such as in the Fe-based superconductors or in some of the heavy-fermion compounds, exhibit a resistivity varying linearly with t emperature and a contribution to specific heat or thermopower proportional to $T ln T$. It is shown here that a generic model of itinerant AFM can be canonically transformed such that its critical fluctuations around the AFM-vector $Q$ can be obtained from the fluctuations in the long wave-length limit of a dissipative quantum XY model. The fluctuations of the dissipative quantum XY model in 2D have been evaluated recently and in a large regime of parameters, they are determined, not by renormalized spin-fluctuations but by topological excitations. In this regime, the fluctuations are separable in their spatial and temporal dependence and have a dynamical critical exponent $z =infty.$ The time dependence gives $omega/T$-scaling at criticality. The observed resistivity and entropy then follow directly. Several predictions to test the theory are also given.
