We have studied molecular hydrogen in a pure 1D geometry and inside a narrow carbon nanotube by means of the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The one-dimensionality of H2 in the nanotube is well maintained in a large density range, this system being closer to an ideal 1D fluid than liquid 4He in the same setup. H2 shares with 4He the existence of a stable liquid phase and a quasi-continuous liquid-solid transition at very high linear densities.

We have studied the ground-state properties of para-hydrogen in one dimension and in quasi-one-dimensional configurations using the path integral ground state Monte Carlo method. This method produces zero-temperature exact results for a given interac tion and geometry. The quasi-one-dimensional setup has been implemented in two forms: the inner channel inside a carbon nanotube coated with H$_2$ and a harmonic confinement of variable strength. Our main result is the dependence of the Luttinger parameter on the density within the stable regime. Going from one dimension to quasi-one dimension, keeping the linear density constant, produces a systematic increase of the Luttinger parameter. This increase is however not enough to reach the superfluid regime and the system always remain in the quasi-crystal regime, according to Luttinger liquid theory.
We investigate the possibility of trapping quasi-particles possessing spin degree of freedom in hybrid structures. The hybrid system we are considering here is composed of a semi-magnetic quantum well placed a few nanometers below a ferromagnetic mic romagnet. We are interested in two different micromagnet shapes: cylindrical (micro-disk) and rectangular geometry. We show that in the case of a micro-disk, the spin object is localized in all three directions and therefore zero-dimensional states are created, and in the case of an elongated rectangular micromagnet, the quasi-particles can move freely in one direction, hence one-dimensional states are formed. After calculating profiles of the magnetic field produced by the micromagnets, we analyze in detail the possible light absorption spectrum for different micromagnet thicknesses, and different distances between the micromagnet and the semimagnetic quantum well. We find that the discrete spectrum of the localized states can be detected via spatially-resolved low temperature optical measurement.

We outline the key elements of a recent calculation aimed at determining the equation of state of deconfined (but unpaired) quark matter at zero temperature and high density, using finite quark masses. The computation is performed in perturbation the ory up to three loops, and necessitates the development and application of some novel computational tools. In this talk, we introduce the basic features of these new techniques and review the main sources of motivation for considering finite quark mass effects in perturbation theory.
We report the preparation of novel one-dimensional (1D) C60 nanostructures on rippled graphene. Through careful control of the subtle balance between the linear periodic potential of rippled graphene and the C60 surface mobility, we demonstrate that C60 molecules can be arranged into a 1D C60 chain structure with widths of two to three molecules. At a higher annealing temperature, the 1D chain structure transitions to a more compact hexagonal close packed quasi-1D stripe structure. This first experimental realization of 1D C60 structures on graphene may pave a way for fabricating new C60/graphene hybrid structures for future applications in electronics, spintronics and quantum information.
