Deep surveys of the cosmic X-ray background are reviewed in the context of observational progress enabled by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton. Recent works have discovered two fast ($approx 10$ ks) extragalactic X-ray transients in the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S XT1 and XT2). These findings suggest that a large population of similar extragalactic transients might exist in archival X-ra y observations. We develop a method that can effectively detect such transients in a single Chandra exposure, and systematically apply it to Chandra surveys of CDF-S, CDF-N, DEEP2, UDS, COSMOS, and E-CDF-S, totaling 19~Ms of exposure. We find 13 transient candidates, including CDF-S XT1 and XT2. With the aid of available excellent multiwavelength observations, we identify the physical nature of all these candidates. Aside from CDF-S XT1 and XT2, the other 11 sources are all stellar objects, and all of them have $z$-band magnitudes brighter than 20. We estimate an event rate of $59^{+77}_{-38} rm{evt yr^{-1} deg^{-2}}$ for CDF-S XT-like transients with 0.5-7 keV peak fluxes $log F_{rm peak} gtrsim -12.6$ (erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$). This event rate translates to $approx 15^{+20}_{-10}$ transients existing among Chandra archival observations at Galactic latitudes $|b|>20^{circ}$, which can be probed in future work. Future missions such as Athena and the Einstein Probe with large grasps (effective area $times$ field of view) are needed to discover a large sample ($sim$ thousands) of fast extragalactic X-ray transients.
In this article we review the measurements and understanding of the X-ray background (XRB), discovered by Giacconi and collaborators 35 years ago. We start from the early history and the debate whether the XRB is due to a single, homogeneous physical process or to the summed emission of discrete sources, which was finally settled by COBE and ROSAT. We then describe in detail the progress from ROSAT deep surveys and optical identifications of the faint X-ray source population. In particular we discuss the role of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as dominant contributors for the XRB, and argue that so far there is no need to postulate a hypothesized new population of X-ray sources. The recent advances in the understanding of X-ray spectra of AGN is reviewed and a population synthesis model, based on the unified AGN schemes, is presented. This model is so far the most promising to explain all observational constraints. Future sensitive X-ray surveys in the harder X-ray band will be able to unambiguously test this picture.
Since the IAU (maser-)Symposium 287 in Stellenbosch/South Africa (Jan. 2012), great progress has been achieved in studying extragalactic maser sources. Sensitivity has reached a level allowing for dedicated maser surveys of extragalactic objects. The se included, during the last years, water vapor (H2O), methanol (CH3OH), and formaldehyde (H2CO), while surveys related to hydroxyl (OH), cyanoacetylene (HC3N) and ammonia (NH3) may soon become (again) relevant. Overall, with the upgraded Very Large Array (VLA), the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), FAST (Five hundred meter Aperture Synthesis Telescope) and the low frequency arrays APERTIF (APERture Tile in Focus), ASKAP (Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder) and MeerKAT (Meer Karoo Array Telescope), extragalactic maser studies are expected to flourish during the upcoming years. The following article provides a brief sketch of past achievements, ongoing projects and future perspectives.
We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift $5<z<12$ galaxies through extensive image simulations of accepted JWST programs su ch as CEERS in the EGS field and HUDF GTO. We introduce complete samples of $sim300,000$ galaxies with stellar masses $log(M_*/M_odot)>6$ and redshifts $0<z<15$, as well as galactic stars, into realistic mock NIRCam, MIRI and HST images to properly describe the impact of source blending. We extract the photometry of the detected sources as in real images and estimate the physical properties of galaxies through spectral energy distribution fitting. We find that the photometric redshifts are primarily limited by the availability of blue-band and near-infrared medium-band imaging. The stellar masses and star-formation rates are recovered within $0.25$ and $0.3$ dex respectively, for galaxies with accurate photometric redshifts. Brown dwarfs contaminating the $z>5$ galaxy samples can be reduced to $<0.01$ arcmin$^{-2}$ with a limited impact on galaxy completeness. We investigate multiple high-redshift galaxy selection techniques and find the best compromise between completeness and purity at $5<z<10$ using the full redshift posterior probability distributions. In the EGS field, the galaxy completeness remains higher than $50%$ for $m_text{UV}<27.5$ sources at all redshifts, and the purity is maintained above $80$ and $60%$ at $zleq7$ and $10$ respectively. The faint-end slope of the galaxy UV luminosity function is recovered with a precision of $0.1-0.25$, and the cosmic star-formation rate density within $0.1$ dex. We argue in favor of additional observing programs covering larger areas to better constrain the bright end.
We discuss the spectral analysis of a sample of 63 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected above a limiting flux of $S(8-24$ keV$)=7times10^{-14}$ erg/s/cm$^2$ in the multi-tiered NuSTAR Extragalactic Survey program. The sources span a redshift range z =0-2.1 (median $langle$z$rangle=$0.58). The spectral analysis is performed over the broad 0.5-24 keV energy range, combining NuSTAR with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton data and employing empirical and physically motivated models. This constitutes the largest sample of AGN selected at $ >10$ keV to be homogeneously spectrally analyzed at these flux levels. We study the distribution of spectral parameters such as photon index, column density ($N_{rm H}$), reflection parameter ($R$) and 10-40 keV luminosity ($L_{X}$). Heavily obscured ($log [N_{rm H}/cm^{-2}]ge23$) and Compton Thick (CT; $log [N_{rm H}/cm^{-2}]ge24$) AGN constitute $sim$25% (15-17 sources) and $sim$2-3% ( 1-2 sources) of the sample, respectively. The observed $N_{rm H}$ distribution fairly agrees with predictions of Cosmic X-ray Background population synthesis models (CXBPSM). We estimate the intrinsic fraction of AGN as a function of $N_{H}$, accounting for the bias against obscured AGN in a flux-selected sample. The fraction of CT AGN relative to $log [N_{rm H}/cm^{-2}]=20-24$ AGN is poorly constrainted, formally in the range 2-56% (90% upper limit of 66%). We derived a fraction ($f_{abs}$) of obscured AGN ($log [N_{rm H}/cm^{-2}]=22-24$) as a function of $L_{X}$ in agreement with CXBPSM and previous z < 1 X-ray determinations. Furthermore $f_{abs}$ at z=0.1-0.5 and $log (L_{X}/erg$ $s^{-1})approx43.6-44.3$ agrees with observational measurements/trends obtained over larger redshift intervals. We report a significant anti-correlation of $R$ with $L_{X}$ (confirmed by our companion paper on stacked spectra) with considerable scatter around the median $R$ values.
