We report on abundances of O, Mg, Si, Ca and Fe for 10 giants in the Sgr dwarf spheroidal derived from high resolution spectra obtained with UVES at the 8.2m Kueyen-VLT telescope. The iron abundance spans the range -0.8 <[Fe/H] < 0.0 and the dominant population is relatively metal-rich with [Fe/H] -0.25. The alpha/Fe ratios are slightly subsolar, even at the lowest observed metallicities suggesting a slow or bursting star formation rate. From our sample of 12 giants (including the two observed by Bonifacio et al 2000) we conclude that a substantial metal rich population exists in Sgr, which dominates the sample. The spectroscopic metallicities allow one to break the age-metallicity degeneracy in the interpretation of the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Comparison of isochrones of appropriate metallicity with the observed CMD suggests an age of 1 Gyr or younger, for the dominant Sgr population sampled by us. We argue that the observations support a star formation that is triggered by the passage of Sgr through the Galactic disc, both in Sgr and in the disc. This scenario has also the virtue of explaining the mysterious ``bulge C stars as disc stars formed in this event. The interaction of Sgr with the Milky Way is likely to have played a major role in its evolution.

We present abundances for 12 giants in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr dSph) obtained from VLT - UVES spectra. Moving on a short period, polar orbit around the Milky Way, the Sgr dSph is undergoing tidal disruption and will eventually di ssolve in the Halo. Our sample is dominated by a metal rich, alpha-element-poor population, indicative of long chemical processing of the dSph gas during a slow, probably bursting star formation history. This population is the most metal-rich ever observed in a Dwarf Galaxy of the Local Group, and has the lowest alpha-element content. Placing the known abundances of the LG dwarfs on the [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane allows now to recognize a well defined evolutive sequence, different from the one followed by the MW disk stars, but apparently superimposed to the one followed by many of the Damped Lyman Alpha systems.

We have determined detailed elemental abundances and stellar ages for a sample of now 38 microlensed dwarf and subgiant stars in the Galactic bulge. Stars with sub-solar metallicities are all old and have enhanced alpha-element abundances -- very sim ilar to what is seen for local thick disk stars. The metal-rich stars on the other hand show a wide variety of stellar ages, ranging from 3-4 Gyr to 12 Gyr, and an average around 7-8 Gyr. The existence of young and metal-rich stars are in conflict with recent photometric studies of the bulge which claim that the bulge only contains old stars.

We carried out a survey for high-metallicity C IV absorbers at redshift z ~ 2.3 in the spectra of 9 high-quality quasar spectra. Using a novel analysis technique, based on detections of C IV lines and automatically determined upper limits on the colu mn densities of H I, C III, N V, and O VI, we find a large (dN/dz > 7) population of photo-ionized, compact (R ~ 10^2 pc), metal-rich (Z >~ Z_solar) C IV clouds with moderate densities (n_H ~ 10^{-3.5} cm^{-3}), properties that we show are robust with respect to uncertainties in the ionization model. In particular, local sources of ionizing radiation, overabundance of oxygen, departures from ionization equilibrium, and collisional ionization would all imply more compact clouds. The clouds are too small to be self-gravitating and pressure confinement is only consistent under special conditions. We argue that the clouds are, in any case, likely to be short-lived and we demonstrate that this implies that the clouds could easily have been responsible for the transport of all metals that end up in the intergalactic medium (IGM). When the clouds reach pressure equilibrium with the general, photo-ionized IGM, the metals will still be concentrated in small high-metallicity patches, but they will look like ordinary, low-metallicity absorbers. We conclude that intergalactic metals are poorly mixed on small scales and that nearly all of the IGM, and thus the universe, may therefore be of primordial composition.
We present new limits on the ejection of metal-rich old-population hypervelocity stars from the Galactic center (GC) as probed by the SEGUE-2 survey. Our limits are a factor of 3-10 more stringent than previously reported, depending on stellar type. Compared to the known population of B-star ejectees, there can be no more than 30 times more metal-rich old-population F/G stars ejected from the GC. Because B stars comprise a tiny fraction of a normal stellar population, this places significant limits on a combination of the GC mass function and the ejection mechanism for hypervelocity stars. In the presence of a normal GC mass function, our results require an ejection mechanism that is about 5.5 times more efficient at ejecting B-stars compared to low-mass F/G stars.
As part of the Spaghetti Project Survey (SPS) we have detected a concentration of giant stars well above expectations for a smooth halo model. The position (l~350, b~50) and distance (~50 kpc) of this concentration match those of the Northern over-de nsity detected by SDSS (Yanny et al. 2000, Ivezic et al. 2000). We find additional evidence for structure at ~80 kpc in the same direction. We present radial velocities for many of these stars, including the first published results from the 6.5m Magellan telescope. The radial velocities for stars in these structures are in excellent agreement with models of the dynamical evolution of the Sgr dwarf tidal debris, whose center is 60 degrees away. The metallicity of stars in these streams is lower than that of the main body of the Sgr dwarf, which may indicate a radial metallicity gradient prior to disruption.
