The theoretical intensities of the soft X-ray Fe XVII lines arising from 2l-3l transitions are reexamined using a three-ion collisional-radiative model that includes the contributions to line formation of radiative recombination (RR), dielectronic recombination (DR), resonant excitation (RE), and inner-shell collisional ionization (CI), in addition to the usual contribution of collisional excitation (CE). These additional processes enhance mostly the 2p-3s lines and not the 2p-3d lines. Under coronal equilibrium conditions, in the electron temperature range of 400 to 600 eV where the Fe XVII line emissivities peak, the combined effect of the additional processes is to enhance the 2p-3s lines at 16.78, 17.05, and 17.10 A, by ~ 25%, 30%, and 55%, respectively, compared with their traditional, single-ion CE values. The weak 2p-3d line at 15.45 A is also enhanced by up to 20%, while the other 2p-3d lines are almost unaffected. The effects of DR and RE are found to be dominant in this temperature range (400 - 600 eV), while that of CI is 3% at the most, and the contribution of RR is less than 1%. At lower temperatures, where the Fe XVII / Fe XVIII abundance ratio is high, the RE effect dominates. However, as the temperature rises and the Fe XVIII abundance increases, the DR effect takes over. The newly calculated line powers can reproduce most of the often observed high values of the (I17.05 + I17.10) / I15.01 intensity ratio. The importance of ionization and recombination processes to the line strengths also helps to explain why laboratory measurements in which CE is essentially the sole mechanism agree well with single-ion calculations, but do not reproduce the astrophysically observed ratios.

New laboratory measurements using an Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) and an x-ray microcalorimeter are presented for the n=3 to n=2 Fe XVII emission lines in the 15 {AA} to 17 {AA} range, along with new theoretical predictions for a variety of electron energy distributions. This work improves upon our earlier work on these lines by providing measurements at more electron impact energies (seven values from 846 to 1185 eV), performing an in situ determination of the x-ray window transmission, taking steps to minimize the ion impurity concentrations, correcting the electron energies for space charge shifts, and estimating the residual electron energy uncertainties. The results for the 3C/3D and 3s/3C line ratios are generally in agreement with the closest theory to within 10%, and in agreement with previous measurements from an independent group to within 20%. Better consistency between the two experimental groups is obtained at the lowest electron energies by using theory to interpolate, taking into account the significantly different electron energy distributions. Evidence for resonance collision effects in the spectra is discussed. Renormalized values for the absolute cross sections of the 3C and 3D lines are obtained by combining previously published results, and shown to be in agreement with the predictions of converged R-matrix theory. This work establishes consistency between results from independent laboratories and improves the reliability of these lines for astrophysical diagnostics. Factors that should be taken into account for accurate diagnostics are discussed, including electron energy distribution, polarization, absorption/scattering, and line blends.
We report extensive calculations of the decay properties of fine-structure K-vacancy levels in Fe X-Fe XVII. A large set of level energies, wavelengths, radiative and Auger rates, and fluorescence yields has been computed using three different standa rd atomic codes, namely Cowans HFR, AUTOSTRUCTURE and the Breit-Pauli R-matrix package. This multi-code approach is used to the study the effects of core relaxation, configuration interaction and the Breit interaction, and enables the estimate of statistical accuracy ratings. The K-alpha and KLL Auger widths have been found to be nearly independent of both the outer-electron configuration and electron occupancy keeping a constant ratio of 1.53+/-0.06. By comparing with previous theoretical and measured wavelengths, the accuracy of the present set is determined to be within 2 mA. Also, the good agreement found between the different radiative and Auger data sets that have been computed allow us to propose with confidence an accuracy rating of 20% for the line fluorescence yields greater than 0.01. Emission and absorption spectral features are predicted finding good correlation with measurements in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.
The evidence of a decrease with increasing luminosity of the fraction f_{abs} of absorbed and Compton-thin among X-ray (2-10 keV) selected AGN is observationally rather well supported, while that of an increase of f_{abs} with redshift is rather cont roversial. In Lamastra, Perola & Matt (2006) the gravitational effect of the SMBH on the molecular interstellar gas, in the central region of the host galaxy, was shown to predict an anti-correlation between f_{abs} and M_{BH}. The most recent findings on the distribution of the Eddington ratio lambda=L_b/L_E as a function of M_{BH} and z are used to convert that relationship into one between f_{abs} and both bolometric (L_b) and X-ray (L_X) luminosities at various values of z. The findings on lambda(M_{BH},z) are properly treated in order to ensure completeness in the prediction of f_{abs} above a certain luminosity, at values of z=0.1, 0.35, 0.7 and >1. To verify the consequence of these findings alone, we adopted in a first istance a distribution of gas surface density Sigma, observed in a sample of local spiral galaxies, irrespective of the galaxy morphological type and z. Assuming in the lambda(M_{BH},z) distribution the Eddington limit, lambda=1, as a ``natural cut-off, the predictions are consistent with the existence of an anti-correlation between f_{abs} and L_X, but fail to reproduce an increase of f_{abs} with z. Because the early type galaxies on average are much poorer in molecular gas than late type ones, a quantitative agreement with the local value of f_{abs} requires the existence of a correlation between Sigma and the central activity. An increase of typical values of Sigma with z, correlated with the activity, might explain an increase of f_{abs} with z. However, at the highest luminosities f_{abs} could hardly exceed about 0.3.
At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyze the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 511 keV constrains the maximum electron Lorentz factor to be leq 10 and the slope of the injected electrons to leq 2.5. We also use the fast (10-50 Hz) variability spectrum to constrain the spatial dependence of the electron heating and acceleration. We find that the spectrum of the fast variability is consistent with being fully thermal, so that the observed non-thermal emission is produced from further out in the flow.

The Fe-K line, an important physical diagnostic in the X-ray spectra of AGN, has been notoriously difficult to measure in the high-luminosity, radio-loud quasar 3C 273 (z=0.158). On the few occasions that it has been detected its intrinsic width has been thought to be narrow (FWHM < 10,000 km/s) with an equivalent width (EW) of a few tens of eV.This was consistent with the general trend that as one goes from low to high luminosity AGNs the Fe-K line goes from being strong (EW ~200-300 eV) and broad (FWHM ~ 100,000 km/s) to being weak and narrow, or absent altogether. Here we present the results of new ASCA and RXTE observations, together with archival ASCA data, and show for the first time that the Fe-K line in 3C 273 is as broad as that seen in Seyfert 1. The line is resolved in two of the observations, with a mean Gaussian width of 0.8 +/- 0.3 keV, or FWHM of 0.3 +/- 0.1c. The smallest and largest EW measured is 43 +/- 34 eV, and 133 (+52,-53) eV respectively (quasar frame). The Compton-reflection continuum is less than 10% of that expected from a centrally illuminated semi-infinite, face-on, Compton-thick disk, confirming previous studies that Compton reflection is negligible in 3C 273. The largest values of the Fe-K line EW are under-predicted if the line originates in the disk, unless a time lag longer than several days between line and continuum and/or an over-abundance of Fe is invoked. We cannot unambiguously constrain the disk inclination angle. About 60 deg is preferred for a cold disk, while a face-on disk is allowed if the ionization state of Fe is H-like.
