Mkn 421 was observed by Chandra twice, on November 5, 1999 as part of the Chandra calibration program, with the ACIS-HETG configuration, and on May 29, 2000 following our Target Of Opportunity request aimed to catch the source in an ultra-high state, with both the ACIS-HETG and the HRC-LETG configurations. In this contribution we present and compare the two Chandra-MEG observations of Mkn 421, which lasted 26 and 19.6 ks respectively.

We present the analysis of six {it Chandra} X-ray high-resolution observations of the black hole low-mass X-ray binary 4U~1630-47 taken during its 2012-2013 outburst. {rm Fe}~{sc XXVI} K$alpha$, K$beta$, {rm Fe}~{sc XXV} K$alpha$, K$beta$ and {rm Ca} ~{sc XX} K$alpha$ blueshifted absorption lines were identified in the first four observations, which correspond to soft accretion states. The remaining observations, associated to intermediate and possibly hard accretion states, do not show significant absorption features down to equivalent width of 1 eV for both {rm Fe}~{sc XXVI} and {rm Fe}~{sc XXV}. We inferred wind launching radii between $1.2- 2.0$ ($10^{12}$ cm$/n$)$ times 10^{11}$~cm and column densities $N({rm H})> 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. In the first four observations we found that thermal pressure is likely to be the dominant launching mechanism for the wind, although such conclusions depend on the assumed density. We used the spectral energy distributions obtained from our continuum modeling to compute thermal stability curves for all observations using the {sc xstar} photoionization code. We found that the absence of lines in the transitional state cannot be attributed to an evolution of the plasma caused by thermal instabilities derived from the change in the continuum spectrum. In contrast, the disappearance of the wind could indicate an acceleration of the flow or that the plasma has been exhausted during the soft state.

Mkn 421 was repeatedly observed with BeppoSAX in 1997-1998. We present highlights of the results of the thorough temporal and spectral analysis discussed by Fossati et al. (1999) and Maraschi et al. (1999), focusing on the flare of April 1998, which was simultaneously observed also at TeV energies. The detailed study of the flare in different energy bands reveals a few very important new results: (a) hard photons lag the soft ones by 2-3 ks *a behavior opposite to what is normally found in High energy peak BL Lacs X-ray spectra*; (b) the flux decay of the flare can be intrinsically achromatic if a stationary underlying emission component is present. Moreover the spectral evolution during the flare has been followed by extracting X-ray spectra on few ks intervals, allowing to detect for the first time the peak of the synchrotron component shifting to higher energies during the rising phase, and then receding. The spectral analysis confirms the delay in the flare at the higher energies, as above a few keV the spectrum changes only after the peak of the outburst has occurred. The spectral and temporal information obtained challenge the simplest models currently adopted for the (synchrotron) emission and most importantly provide clues on the particle acceleration process. A theoretical picture accounting for all the observational constraints is discussed, where electrons are injected at low energies and then progressively accelerated during the development of the flare.
Context:The HAGAR Telescope Array at Hanle, Ladakh has been regularly monitoring the nearby blazar Mkn 421 for the past 7yrs. Aims: Blazars show flux variability in all timescales across the electromagnetic spectrum. While there is abundant literat ure characterizing the short term flares from different blazars, comparatively little work has been done to study the long term variability. We aim to study the long term temporal and spectral variability in the radiation from Mkn 421 during 2009-2015. Methods: We quantify the variability and lognormality from the radio to the VHE bands, and compute the correlations between the various wavebands using the z-transformed discrete correlation function. We construct the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) contemporaneous with HAGAR observation seasons and fit it with a one zone synchrotron self Compton model to study the spectral variability. Results: The flux is found to be highly variable across all time scales. The variability is energy dependant, and is maximum in the X-ray and Very High Energy (VHE) bands. A strong correlation is found between the Fermi-LAT (gamma) and radio bands, and between Fermi-LAT and optical, but none between Fermi-LAT and X-ray. Lognormality in the flux distribution is clearly detected. This is the third blazar, following BL~Lac and PKS~2155$+$304 to show this behavior. The SED can be well fit by a one zone SSC model, and variations in the flux states can be attributed mainly due to changes in the particle distribution. A strong correlation is seen between the break energy $gamma_b$ of the particle spectrum and the total bolometric luminosity.
The X-ray observations of Mkn 421 show significant spectral curvature that can be reproduced by a log-parabola function. The spectra can also be fitted by an analytical model considering synchrotron emission from an electron distribution that is acce lerated at a shock front with an energy-dependent diffusion(EDD model). The spectral fit of NuSTAR and Swift-XRT observations using EDD model during different flux states reveal the model parameters are strongly correlated. We perform a detailed investigation of this correlation to decipher the information hidden underneath. The model predicts the synchrotron peak energy to be correlated with the peak spectral curvature which is consistent with the case of Mkn 421. Expressing the energy dependence of the diffusion in terms of the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence energy index, it appears the turbulence shifts from Kolmogorov/Kraichnan type to Bohm limit during high flux states. Further, the correlation between the best-fit parameters of EDD model lets us derive an expression for the product of source magnetic field(B) and jet Doppler factor($delta$) in terms of synchrotron and Compton peak energies. The synchrotron peak energy is obtained using the simultaneous Swift-XRT and NuSTAR observations; whereas, the Compton peak energy is estimated by performing a linear regression analysis of the archival spectral peaks. The deduced $delta$B varies over a wide range; however, it satisfies reasonably well with the values estimated solely from the spectral peak energies independent of the EDD model. This highlights the plausible connection between the microscopic description of the electron diffusion with the macroscopic quantities deciding the broadband spectrum of Mkn 421.

High resolution spectra of the active binary Capella (G8 III + G1 III) covering the energy range 0.4-8.0 keV (1.5-30 Angstroms) show a large number of emission lines, demonstrating the performance of the HETGS. A preliminary application of plasma dia gnostics provides information on coronal temperatures and densities. Lines arising from different elements in a range of ionization states indicate that Capella has plasma with a broad range of temperatures, from log T = 6.3 to 7.2, generally consistent with recent results from observations with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA). The electron density is determined from He-like O VII lines, giving the value N_e=10^10 cm^-3 at T_e=2*10^6 K; He-like lines formed at higher temperatures give only upper limits to the electron density. The density and emission measure from O VII lines together indicate that the coronal loops are significantly smaller than the stellar radius.
