We investigate the role of disorder in the edge transport of axion insulator films. We predict by first-principles calculations that even-number-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ have gapped helical edge states. The random potential will dramatically modify the edge spectral function to become gapless. However, such gapless helical state here is fundamentally different from that in quantum spin Hall insulator or topological Anderson insulator. We further study the edge transport in this system by Landauer-B{u}ttiker formalism, and find such gapless edge state is dissipative and not immune to backscattering, which would explain the dissipative nonlocal transport in the axion insulator state observed in six septuple layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ experimentally. Several transport experiments are proposed to verify our theory on the dissipative helical edge channels. In particular, the longitudinal resistance can be greatly reduced by adding an extra floating probe even if it is not used. These results will facilitate the observsation of long-sought topological magnetoelectric effect in axion insulators.

The axion insulator is a higher-order topological insulator protected by inversion symmetry. We show that under quenched disorder respecting inversion symmetry {it on average}, the topology of the axion insulator stays robust, and an intermediate met allic phase in which states are delocalized is unavoidable at the transition from an axion insulator to a trivial insulator. We derive this conclusion from general arguments, from classical percolation theory, and from the numerical study of a 3D quantum network model simulating a disordered axion insulator through a layer construction. We find the localization length critical exponent near the delocalization transition to be $ u=1.42pm 0.12$. We further show that this delocalization transition is stable even to weak breaking of the average inversion symmetry, up to a critical strength. We also quantitatively map our quantum network model to an effective Hamiltonian and we find its low energy k$cdot$p expansion.
Axion insulator is an exotic magnetic topological insulator with zero Chern number but a nonzero quantized Chern-Simons magnetoelectric coupling. A conclusive experimental evidence for axion insulators is still lacking due to the small signal of topo logical magnetoelectric effect (TME). Here we show that the dynamical magnetoelectric coupling can be induced by the emph{out-of-plane} surface magnetization dynamics in axion insulator thin films, which further generates a polarization current in the presence of an external magnetic field in the same direction. Such a current is finite in the bulk and increases as the film thickness $d$ decreases, in opposite to TME current which decreases as $d$ decreases. Remarkably, the current in thin films at magnetic resonance is at least ten times larger than that of TME, and thus may serve as a smoking gun signature for axion insulators.
The axion is a hypothetical but experimentally undetected particle. Recently, the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to host the axion insulator, but the experimental evidence remains elusive. Specifically, the axion insulator is believed to carry half-quantized chiral currents running antiparallel on its top and bottom surfaces. However, it is challenging to measure precisely the half-quantization. Here, we propose a nonlocal surface transport device, in which the axion insulator can be distinguished from normal insulators without a precise measurement of the half-quantization. More importantly, we show that the nonlocal surface transport, as a qualitative measurement, is robust in realistic situations when the gapless side surfaces and disorder come to play. Moreover, thick electrodes can be used in the device of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thick films, enhancing the feasibility of the surface measurements. This proposal will be insightful for the search of the axion insulator and axion in topological matter.
Doping a topological insulator (TI) film with transition metal ions can break its time-reversal symmetry and lead to the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. Prior studies have shown that the longitudinal resistance of the QAH samp les usually does not vanish when the Hall resistance shows a good quantization. This has been interpreted as a result of the presence of possible dissipative conducting channels in magnetic TI samples. By studying the temperature- and magnetic field-dependence of the magnetoresistance of a magnetic TI sandwich heterostructure device, we demonstrate that the predominant dissipation mechanism in thick QAH insulators can switch between non-chiral edge states and residual bulk states in different magnetic field regimes. The interactions between bulk states, chiral edge states, and non-chiral edge states are also investigated. Our study provides a way to distinguish between the dissipation arising from the residual bulk states and non-chiral edge states, which is crucial for achieving true dissipationless transport in QAH insulators and for providing deeper insights into QAH-related phenomena.
We study conductivity of strongly disordered amorphous antimony films under high bias voltages. We observe non-linear current-voltage characteristic, where the conductivity value at zero bias is one of two distinct values, being determined by the sig n of previously applied voltage. Relaxation curves demonstrate high stability of these conductivity values on a large timescale. Investigations of the antimony film structure allows to determine the percolation character of electron transport in strongly disordered films. We connect the memory effect in conductivity with modification of the percolation pattern due to recharging of some film regions at high bias voltages.
