Convolutional networks have been widely applied for computer vision system. Encouraged by these results, a U-Net convolutional network was applied to recognition of vessels and materials in chemistry lab using the recent Vector-LabPics dataset, which contains 2187 images of materials within mostly transparent vessels in a chemistry lab and other general settings, labeled with 13 classes. By optimizing hyperparameters including learning rates and learning rate decays, 87% accuracy in vessel recognition was achieved. In the case of relatively small training and test sets (relatively rare materials states, the number of training set samples less than 500 and the number of test set samples less than 100), a comprehensive improvement over 18% in IoU and 19% in accuracy for the best model were achieved. Further improvements may be achievable by incorporating improved convolutional network structure into our models.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness all over the world, with approximately 60 million cases reported worldwide in 2010. If undiagnosed in time, glaucoma causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve leading to blindness. The optic nerve head examination, which involves measurement of cup-to-disc ratio, is considered one of the most valuable methods of structural diagnosis of the disease. Estimation of cup-to-disc ratio requires segmentation of optic disc and optic cup on eye fundus images and can be performed by modern computer vision algorithms. This work presents universal approach for automatic optic disc and cup segmentation, which is based on deep learning, namely, modification of U-Net convolutional neural network. Our experiments include comparison with the best known methods on publicly available databases DRIONS-DB, RIM-ONE v.3, DRISHTI-GS. For both optic disc and cup segmentation, our method achieves quality comparable to current state-of-the-art methods, outperforming them in terms of the prediction time.
To help prevent motor vehicle accidents, there has been significant interest in finding an automated method to recognize signs of driver distraction, such as talking to passengers, fixing hair and makeup, eating and drinking, and using a mobile phone . In this paper, we present an automated supervised learning method called Drive-Net for driver distraction detection. Drive-Net uses a combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a random decision forest for classifying images of a driver. We compare the performance of our proposed Drive-Net to two other popular machine-learning approaches: a recurrent neural network (RNN), and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). We test the methods on a publicly available database of images acquired under a controlled environment containing about 22425 images manually annotated by an expert. Results show that Drive-Net achieves a detection accuracy of 95%, which is 2% more than the best results obtained on the same database using other methods
As a unique and promising biometric, video-based gait recognition has broad applications. The key step of this methodology is to learn the walking pattern of individuals, which, however, often suffers challenges to extract the behavioral feature from a sequence directly. Most existing methods just focus on either the appearance or the motion pattern. To overcome these limitations, we propose a sequential convolutional network (SCN) from a novel perspective, where spatiotemporal features can be learned by a basic convolutional backbone. In SCN, behavioral information extractors (BIE) are constructed to comprehend intermediate feature maps in time series through motion templates where the relationship between frames can be analyzed, thereby distilling the information of the walking pattern. Furthermore, a multi-frame aggregator in SCN performs feature integration on a sequence whose length is uncertain, via a mobile 3D convolutional layer. To demonstrate the effectiveness, experiments have been conducted on two popular public benchmarks, CASIA-B and OU-MVLP, and our approach is demonstrated superior performance, comparing with the state-of-art methods.
Continuous sign language recognition (SLR) aims to translate a signing sequence into a sentence. It is very challenging as sign language is rich in vocabulary, while many among them contain similar gestures and motions. Moreover, it is weakly supervi sed as the alignment of signing glosses is not available. In this paper, we propose Structured Feature Network (SF-Net) to address these challenges by effectively learn multiple levels of semantic information in the data. The proposed SF-Net extracts features in a structured manner and gradually encodes information at the frame level, the gloss level and the sentence level into the feature representation. The proposed SF-Net can be trained end-to-end without the help of other models or pre-training. We tested the proposed SF-Net on two large scale public SLR datasets collected from different continuous SLR scenarios. Results show that the proposed SF-Net clearly outperforms previous sequence level supervision based methods in terms of both accuracy and adaptability.
Despite the recent advances in optical character recognition (OCR), mathematical expressions still face a great challenge to recognize due to their two-dimensional graphical layout. In this paper, we propose a convolutional sequence modeling network, ConvMath, which converts the mathematical expression description in an image into a LaTeX sequence in an end-to-end way. The network combines an image encoder for feature extraction and a convolutional decoder for sequence generation. Compared with other Long Short Term Memory(LSTM) based encoder-decoder models, ConvMath is entirely based on convolution, thus it is easy to perform parallel computation. Besides, the network adopts multi-layer attention mechanism in the decoder, which allows the model to align output symbols with source feature vectors automatically, and alleviates the problem of lacking coverage while training the model. The performance of ConvMath is evaluated on an open dataset named IM2LATEX-100K, including 103556 samples. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network achieves state-of-the-art accuracy and much better efficiency than previous methods.
