We investigate the use of multimodal information contained in images as an effective method for enhancing the commonsense of Transformer models for text generation. We perform experiments using BART and T5 on concept-to-text generation, specifically the task of generative commonsense reasoning, or CommonGen. We call our approach VisCTG: Visually Grounded Concept-to-Text Generation. VisCTG involves captioning images representing appropriate everyday scenarios, and using these captions to enrich and steer the generation process. Comprehensive evaluation and analysis demonstrate that VisCTG noticeably improves model performance while successfully addressing several issues of the baseline generations, including poor commonsense, fluency, and specificity.

We propose an unsupervised approach for sarcasm generation based on a non-sarcastic input sentence. Our method employs a retrieve-and-edit framework to instantiate two major characteristics of sarcasm: reversal of valence and semantic incongruity wit h the context which could include shared commonsense or world knowledge between the speaker and the listener. While prior works on sarcasm generation predominantly focus on context incongruity, we show that combining valence reversal and semantic incongruity based on the commonsense knowledge generates sarcasm of higher quality. Human evaluation shows that our system generates sarcasm better than human annotators 34% of the time, and better than a reinforced hybrid baseline 90% of the time.

Question generation (QG) is to generate natural and grammatical questions that can be answered by a specific answer for a given context. Previous sequence-to-sequence models suffer from a problem that asking high-quality questions requires commonsens e knowledge as backgrounds, which in most cases can not be learned directly from training data, resulting in unsatisfactory questions deprived of knowledge. In this paper, we propose a multi-task learning framework to introduce commonsense knowledge into question generation process. We first retrieve relevant commonsense knowledge triples from mature databases and select triples with the conversion information from source context to question. Based on these informative knowledge triples, we design two auxiliary tasks to incorporate commonsense knowledge into the main QG model, where one task is Concept Relation Classification and the other is Tail Concept Generation. Experimental results on SQuAD show that our proposed methods are able to noticeably improve the QG performance on both automatic and human evaluation metrics, demonstrating that incorporating external commonsense knowledge with multi-task learning can help the model generate human-like and high-quality questions.
Humans use commonsense reasoning (CSR) implicitly to produce natural and coherent responses in conversations. Aiming to close the gap between current response generation (RG) models and human communication abilities, we want to understand why RG mode ls respond as they do by probing RG models understanding of commonsense reasoning that elicits proper responses. We formalize the problem by framing commonsense as a latent variable in the RG task and using explanations for responses as textual form of commonsense. We collect 6k annotated explanations justifying responses from four dialogue datasets and ask humans to verify them and propose two probing settings to evaluate RG models CSR capabilities. Probing results show that models fail to capture the logical relations between commonsense explanations and responses and fine-tuning on in-domain data and increasing model sizes do not lead to understanding of CSR for RG. We hope our study motivates more research in making RG models emulate the human reasoning process in pursuit of smooth human-AI communication.
Task-oriented conversational modeling with unstructured knowledge access, as track 1 of the 9th Dialogue System Technology Challenges (DSTC 9), requests to build a system to generate response given dialogue history and knowledge access. This challeng e can be separated into three subtasks, (1) knowledge-seeking turn detection, (2) knowledge selection, and (3) knowledge-grounded response generation. We use pre-trained language models, ELECTRA and RoBERTa, as our base encoder for different subtasks. For subtask 1 and 2, the coarse-grained information like domain and entity are used to enhance knowledge usage. For subtask 3, we use a latent variable to encode dialog history and selected knowledge better and generate responses combined with copy mechanism. Meanwhile, some useful post-processing strategies are performed on the models final output to make further knowledge usage in the generation task. As shown in released evaluation results, our proposed system ranks second under objective metrics and ranks fourth under human metrics.
Text generation has become one of the most important yet challenging tasks in natural language processing (NLP). The resurgence of deep learning has greatly advanced this field by neural generation models, especially the paradigm of pretrained langua ge models (PLMs). In this paper, we present an overview of the major advances achieved in the topic of PLMs for text generation. As the preliminaries, we present the general task definition and briefly describe the mainstream architectures of PLMs for text generation. As the core content, we discuss how to adapt existing PLMs to model different input data and satisfy special properties in the generated text. We further summarize several important fine-tuning strategies for text generation. Finally, we present several future directions and conclude this paper. Our survey aims to provide text generation researchers a synthesis and pointer to related research.
