In this paper we will define a Lagrangian for scalar and gauge fields on causal sets, based on the selection of an Alexandrov set in which the variations of appropriate expressions in terms of either the scalar field or the gauge field holonomies aro und suitable loops take on the least value. For these fields, we will find that the values of the variations of these expressions define Lagrangians in covariant form.

A Universe with finite age also has a finite causal scale. Larger scales can not affect our local measurements or modeling, but far away locations could have different cosmological parameters. The size of our causal Universe depends on the details of inflation and is usually assumed to be larger than our observable Universe today. To account for causality, we propose a new boundary condition, that can be fulfill by fixing the cosmological constant (a free geometric parameter of gravity). This forces a cancellation of vacuum energy with the cosmological constant. As a consequence, the measured cosmic acceleration can not be explained by a simple cosmological constant or constant vacuum energy. We need some additional odd properties such as the existence of evolving dark energy (DE) with energy-density fine tuned to be twice that of dark matter today. We show here that we can instead explain cosmic acceleration without DE (or modified gravity) assuming that the causal scale is smaller than the observable Universe today. Such scale corresponds to half the sky at z=1 and 60 degrees at z=1100, which is consistent with the anomalous lack of correlations observed in the CMB. Late time cosmic acceleration could then be interpreted as the smoking gun of primordial Inflation.

Whether the space-time is curved or not? The experimental criterions to judge this point are: (1) The results of three classical relativistic experiments in essence are favorable to the special relativistic gravitational theory (base in the flat spac e-time). However they are unfavorable to the general relativity. (2) In the Gravity Probe-B experiment: the gyroscope precession rate of the orbital effect deduced from the special relativistic gravitational theory =(2/3)* the precession rate of geodetic effect deduced from the general relativity, the precession rate of the earth rotation effect deduced from the special relativistic gravitational theory =(3/2)* the square of cos(phi)* the precession rate of the frame-dragging effect deduced from the general relativity, where (phi) is the angle between the projection of gyroscope angular velocity in the equatorial plane and the normal line of orbital plane. If the experimental values are identical with the predictive values deduced from the special relativistic gravitational theory, then the space-time is flat.

The Hubble law, determined from the distance modulii and redshifts of galaxies, for the past 80 years, has been used as strong evidence for an expanding universe. This claim is reviewed in light of the claimed lack of necessary evidence for time dila tion in quasar and gamma-ray burst luminosity variations and other lines of evidence. It is concluded that the observations could be used to describe either a static universe (where the Hubble law results from some as-yet-unknown mechanism) or an expanding universe described by the standard Lambda cold dark matter model. In the latter case, size evolution of galaxies is necessary for agreement with observations. Yet the simple non-expanding Euclidean universe fits most data with the least number of assumptions. From this review it is apparent that there are still many unanswered questions in cosmology and the title question of this paper is still far from being answered.

We are used to the fact that most if not all physical theories are based on the set of real numbers (or another associative division algebra). These all have a cardinality larger than that of the natural numbers, i.e. form a continuum. It is often as ked, whether there really is a continuum in the physical world, or whether a future physical theory could work with just countable infinities. The latter could for example be compatible with a quantized space-time. In this paper we formulate a simple model of the brain and show that within the presented natural assumptions, the continuum has to exist for at least some physical quantities.
