When deriving exact generalized master equations for the evolution of a reduced set of degrees of freedom, one is free to choose what quantities are relevant by specifying projection operators. Different choices of projectors can lead to master equations that are structurally dissimilar and have different memory kernels, despite the resulting dynamics being necessarily the same. This owes to the interplay between projections and explicit imposition of dynamical constraints. We give a simple example to show this point and prove how different memory kernels can yield the same dynamics.

We provide a general construction of quantum generalized master equations with memory kernel leading to well defined, that is completely positive and trace preserving, time evolutions. The approach builds on an operator generalization of memory kerne ls appearing in the description of non-Markovian classical processes, and puts into evidence the non uniqueness of the relationship arising due to the typical quantum issue of operator ordering. The approach provides a physical interpretation of the structure of the kernels, and its connection with the classical viewpoint allows for a trajectory description of the dynamics. Previous apparently unrelated results are now connected in a unified framework, which further allows to phenomenologically construct a large class of non-Markovian evolutions taking as starting point collections of time dependent maps and instantaneous transformations describing the microscopic interaction dynamics.

Alkali-metal-vapor magnetometers, using coherent precession of polarized atomic spins for magnetic field measurement, have become one of the most sensitive magnetic field detectors. Their application areas range from practical uses such as detections of NMR signals to fundamental physics research such as searches for permanent electric dipole moments. One of the main noise sources of atomic magnetometers comes from the light shift that depends on the frequency of the pump laser. In this work, we theoretically study the light shift, taking into account the relaxation due to the optical pumping and the collision between alkali atoms and between alkali atoms and the buffer gas. Starting from a full master equation containing both the ground and excited states, we adiabatically eliminate the excited states and obtain an effective master equation in the ground-state subspace that shows an intuitive picture and dramatically accelerates the numerical simulation. Solving this effective master equation, we find that in the light-narrowing regime, where the line width is reduced while the coherent precession signal is enhanced, the frequency-dependence of the light shift is largely reduced, which agrees with experimental observations in cesium magnetometers. Since this effective master equation is general and is easily solved, it can be applied to an extensive parameter regime, and also to study other physical problems in alkali-metal-vapor magnetometers, such as heading errors.
Local master equations are a widespread tool to model open quantum systems, especially in the context of many-body systems. These equations, however, are believed to lead to thermodynamic anomalies and violation of the laws of thermodynamics. In cont rast, here we rigorously prove that local master equations are consistent with thermodynamics and its laws without resorting to a microscopic model, as done in previous works. In particular, we consider a quantum system in contact with multiple baths and identify the relevant contributions to the total energy, heat currents and entropy production rate. We show that the second law of thermodynamics holds when one considers the proper expression we derive for the heat currents. We confirm the results for the quantum heat currents by using a heuristic argument that connects the quantum probability currents with the energy currents, using an analogous approach as in classical stochastic thermodynamics. We finally use our results to investigate the thermodynamic properties of a set of quantum rotors operating as thermal devices and show that a suitable design of three rotors can work as an absorption refrigerator or a thermal rectifier. For the machines considered here, we also perform an optimisation of the system parameters using an algorithm of reinforcement learning.
We stabilize a chosen radiofrequency beat note between two optical fields derived from the same mode-locked laser pulse train, in order to coherently manipulate quantum information. This scheme does not require access or active stabilization of the l aser repetition rate. We implement and characterize this external lock, in the context of two-photon stimulated Raman transitions between the hyperfine ground states of trapped 171-Yb+ quantum bits.
The interaction between matter and squeezed light has mostly been treated within the approximation that the field correlation time is small. Methods for treating squeezed light with more general correlations currently involve explicitly modeling the systems producing the light. We develop a general purpose input-output theory for a particular form of narrowband squeezed light -- a squeezed wave-packet mode -- that only cares about the statistics of the squeezed field and the shape of the wave packet. This formalism allows us to derive the input-output relations and the master equation. We also consider detecting the scattered field using photon counting and homodyne measurements which necessitates the derivation of the stochastic master equation. The non Markovian nature of the field manifests itself in the master equation as a coupled hierarchy of equations. We illustrate these with consequences for the decay and resonance fluorescence of two-level atoms in the presence of such fields.
