Full control of the ellipticity of broadband pulses of THz radiation, from linear to left- or right-handed circular polarization, was demonstrated via a 4-pixel photoconductive emitter with an integrated achromatic waveplate. Excellent polarization purity and accuracy was achieved, with Stokes parameters exceeding 97% for linear and circular polarization, via a robust scheme that corrected electrically for polarization changes caused by imperfect optical elements. Further, to assess the speed and precision of measurements of the THz polarization we introduced a new figure of merit, the standard error after one second of measurement, found to be 0.047$^{circ}$ for the polarization angle.

Phase-stable electromagnetic pulses in the THz frequency range offer several unique capabilities in time-resolved spectroscopy. However, the diversity of their application is limited by the covered spectral bandwidth. In particular, the upper frequen cy limit of photoconductive emitters - the most widespread technique in THz spectroscopy - reaches only up to 7 THz in regular transmission mode due to the absorption by infrared-active optical phonons. Here, we present ultra-broadband (extending up to 70 THz) THz emission from Au implanted Ge emitter which is compatible with a fibre laser operating at 1.1 and 1.55 {mu}m wavelengths at a repetition rates of 10 and 20 MHz, respectively. This opens a perspective for the development of compact THz photonic devices operating up to multi-THz frequencies and compatible with Si CMOS technology.
High-order harmonic generation in the presence of a chirped THz pulse is investigated numerically with a complete 3D non-adiabatic model. The assisting THz pulse illuminates the HHG gas cell laterally inducing quasi-phase-matching. We demonstrate tha t it is possible to compensate the phase mismatch during propagation and extend the macroscopic cutoff of a propagated strong IR pulse to the single-dipole cutoff. We obtain two orders of magnitude increase in the harmonic efficiency of cutoff harmonics ($approx$170 eV) using a THz pulse of constant wavelength, and a further factor of 3 enhancement when a chirped THz pulse is used.
Coherent control is an optical technique to manipulate quantum states of matter. The coherent control of 40-THz optical phonons in diamond was demonstrated by using a pair of sub-10-fs optical pulses. The optical phonons were detected via transient t ransmittance using a pump and probe protocol. The optical and phonon interferences were observed in the transient transmittance change and its behavior was well reproduced by quantum mechanical calculations with a simple model which consists of two electronic levels and shifted harmonic oscillators.
A whole class of two-color experiments involves intense, short Terahertz radiation pulses. A fast detector that is sensitive and able to resolve both near-infrared and Terahertz pulses at the same time is highly desirable. Here we present the first d etector of this kind. The detector element is a GaAs-based field effect transistor operated at room temperature. THz detection is successfully demonstrated at frequencies up to 4.9 THz. The THz detection time constant is shorter than 30 ps, the optical time constant is 150 ps. This detector is ideally suited for precise, simultaneous resolution of optical and THz pulses and for pulse characterization of high-power THz pulses up to tens of kW peak power levels. The dynamic range of the detector was as large as 65 $pm$ 3 dB/$sqrt{Hz}$, enabling applications in a large variety of experiments and setups, also including table-top systems.
Polarisation analysis of synchrotron THz radiation was carried out with a standard stretched polyethylene polariser and revealed that the linearly polarised (horizontal) component contributes up to 22 +/- 5% to the circular polarised synchrotron emis sion extracted by a gold-coated mirror with a horizontal slit inserted near a bending magnet edge. Comparison with theoretical predictions shows a qualitative match with dominance of the edge radiation. Grid polarisers 3D-printed out of commercial acrilic resin were tested for the polariser function and showed spectral regions where the dichroic ratio DR > 1 and < 1 implying importance of molecular and/or stress induced anisotropy. Metal-coated 3D-printed THz optical elements can find a range of applications in intensity and polarisation control of THz beams.
