Using the second law of local thermodynamics and the first-order Palatini formalism, we formulate relativistic spin hydrodynamics for quantum field theories with Dirac fermions, such as QED and QCD, in a torsionful curved background. We work in a regime where spin density, which is assumed to relax much slower than other non-hydrodynamic modes, is treated as an independent degree of freedom in an extended hydrodynamic description. Spin hydrodynamics in our approach contains only three non-hydrodynamic modes corresponding to a spin vector, whose relaxation time is controlled by a new transport coefficient: the rotational viscosity. We study linear response theory and observe an interesting mode mixing phenomenon between the transverse shear and the spin density modes. We propose several field-theoretical ways to compute the spin relaxation time and the rotational viscosity, via the Green-Kubo formula based on retarded correlation functions.

A newly proposed framework of perfect-fluid relativistic hydrodynamics for particles with spin 1/2 is briefly reviewed. The hydrodynamic equations follow entirely from the conservation laws for energy, momentum, and angular momentum. The incorporatio n of the angular-momentum conservation requires that the spin polarization tensor is introduced. It plays a role of a Lagrange multiplier conjugated to the spin tensor. The space-time evolution of the spin polarization tensor depends on the specific form chosen for the spin tensor.
Symmetry and magnitude of spin-orbit torques (SOT), i.e., current-induced torques on the magnetization of systems lacking inversion symmetry, are investigated in a fully relativistic linear response framework based on the Kubo formalism. By applying all space-time symmetry operations contained in the magnetic point group of a solid to the relevant response coefficient, the torkance expressed as torque-current correlation function, restrictions to the shape of the direct and inverse response tensors are obtained. These are shown to apply to the corresponding thermal analogues as well, namely the direct and inverse thermal SOT in response to a temperature gradient or heat current. Using an implementation of the Kubo-Bastin formula for the torkance into a first-principles multiple-scattering Greens function framework and accounting for disorder effects via the so-called coherent potential approximation (CPA), all contributions to the SOT in pure systems, dilute as well as concentrated alloys can be treated on equal footing. This way, material specific values for all torkance tensor elements in the fcc (111) trilayer alloy system Pt | Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$ | Cu are obtained over a wide concentration range and discussed in comparison to results for electrical and spin conductivity, as well as to previous work - in particular concerning symmetry w.r.t. magnetization reversal and the nature of the various contributions.
We theoretically study THz-light-driven high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the spin-liquid states of the Kitaev honeycomb model with a magnetostriction coupling between spin and electric polarization. To compute the HHG spectra, we numerically solve t he Lindblad equation, taking account of the dissipation effect. We find that isotropic Kitaev models possess a dynamical symmetry, which is broken by a static electric field, analogous to HHG in electron systems. We show that the HHG spectra exhibit characteristic continua of Majorana fermion excitations, and their broad peaks can be controlled by applying static electric or magnetic fields. In particular, the magnetic-field dependence of the HHG spectra drastically differs from those of usual ordered magnets. These results indicate that an intense THz laser provides a powerful tool to observe dynamic features of quantum spin liquids.
Recent progress in the formulation of relativistic hydrodynamics for particles with spin one-half is reviewed. We start with general arguments advising introduction of a tensor spin chemical potential that plays a role of the Lagrange multiplier coup led to the spin angular momentum. Then, we turn to a discussion of spin-dependent distribution functions that have been recently proposed to construct a hydrodynamic framework including spin and serve as a tool in phenomenological studies of hadron polarization. Distribution functions of this type are subsequently used to construct the equilibrium Wigner functions that are employed in the semi-classical kinetic equation. The semi-classical expansion elucidates several aspects of the hydrodynamic approach, in particular, shows the ways in which different possib

We write down a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory for non-relativistic (Galilean) hydrodynamics. We use the null background construction to covariantly couple Galilean field theories to a set of background sources. In this language, Galilean h ydrodynamics gets recast as relativistic hydrodynamics formulated on a one-dimension higher spacetime admitting a null Killing vector. This allows us to import the existing field-theoretic techniques for relativistic hydrodynamics into the Galilean setting, with minor modifications to include the additional background vector field. We use this formulation to work out an interacting field theory describing stochastic fluctuations of energy, momentum, and density modes around thermal equilibrium. We also present a translation of our results to the more conventional Newton-Cartan language and discuss how the same can be derived via a non-relativistic limit of the effective field theory for relativistic hydrodynamics.
