The increasing availability of a variety of two-dimensional materials has generated enormous growth in the field of nanoengineering and nanomechanics. Recent developments in thin film synthesis have enabled the fabrication of freestanding functional oxide membranes that can be readily incorporated in nanomechanical devices. While many oxides are extremely brittle in bulk, recent studies have shown that, in thin membrane form, they can be much more robust to fracture as compared to their bulk counterparts. Here, we investigate the ultimate tensile strength of SrTiO$_3$ membranes by probing freestanding SrTiO$_3$ drumheads using an atomic force microscope. We demonstrate that SrTiO$_3$ membranes can withstand an elastic deformation with an average strain of ~6% in the sub-20 nm thickness regime, which is more than an order of magnitude beyond the bulk limit. We also show that these membranes are highly resilient upon a high cycle fatigue test, surviving up to a billion cycles of force modulation at 85% of their fracture strain, demonstrating their high potential for use in nanomechanical applications.

As graphene became one of the most important materials today, there is a renewed interest on others similar structures. One example is silicene, the silicon analogue of graphene. It share some the remarkable graphene properties, such as the Dirac con e, but presents some distinct ones, such as a pronounced structural buckling. We have investigated, through density functional based tight-binding (DFTB), as well as reactive molecular dynamics (using ReaxFF), the mechanical properties of suspended single-layer silicene. We calculated the elastic constants, analyzed the fracture patterns and edge reconstructions. We also addressed the stress distributions, unbuckling mechanisms and the fracture dependence on the temperature. We analysed the differences due to distinct edge morphologies, namely zigzag and armchair.
We report on fabrication and characterization of ultra-thin suspended single crystalline flat silicon membranes with thickness down to 6 nm. We have developed a method to control the strain in the membranes by adding a strain compensating frame on th e silicon membrane perimeter to avoid buckling of the released membranes. We show that by changing the properties of the frame the strain of the membrane can be tuned in controlled manner. Consequently, both the mechanical properties and the band structure can be engineered and the resulting membranes provide a unique laboratory to study low-dimensional electronic, photonic and phononic phenomena.

Metal halide perovskites single-crystalline thin films (SCTFs) have recently emerged as promising materials for the next generation of optoelectronic devices due to their superior intrinsic properties. However, it is still challenging to transfer and integrate them with other functional materials for hybrid multilayer devices because of their substrate-dependent growth. Herein, a method that allows the SCTFs to be transferred with high quality onto arbitrary substrates has been reported. By introducing hydrophobic treatment to the growth substrates, the adhesion between SCTFs and growth substrates is reduced. Meanwhile, anti-solvent intercalation technique is used to peel off SCTFs from the growth substrates intactly. Finally, centimeter-scale perovskite SCTF has been successfully transferred to target substrate. This work opens up a new route to transfer large-scale perovskite SCTFs, providing a platform to widen the applications of perovskite SCTFs in large-scale hybrid multilayer optoelectronic devices.
The study of subtle effects on transport in semiconductors requires high-quality epitaxial structures with low defect density. Using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), SrTiO$_3$ films with low-temperature mobility exceeding 42,000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^ {-1}$ at low carrier density of 3 x 10$^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ were achieved. A sudden and sharp decrease in residual resistivity accompanied by an enhancement in the superconducting transition temperature were observed across the second Lifshitz transition (LT) where the third band becomes occupied, revealing dominant intra-band scattering. These films further revealed an anomalous behavior in the Hall carrier density as a consequence of the antiferrodistortive (AFD) transition and the temperature-dependence of the Hall scattering factor. Using hybrid MBE growth, phenomenological modeling, temperature-dependent transport measurements, and scanning superconducting quantum interference device imaging, we provide critical insights into the important role of inter- vs intra-band scattering and of AFD domain walls on normal-state and superconducting properties of SrTiO$_3$.
Although a cubic phase of Mn$_3$Ga with an antiferromagnetic order has been theoretically predicted, it has not been experimentally verified in a bulk or film form. Here, we report the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of antiferromagne tic cubic Mn$_3$Ga (C-Mn$_3$Ga) thin films, in comparison with ferrimagnetic tetragonal Mn$_3$Ga (T-Mn3Ga). The structural analyses reveal that C-Mn$_3$Ga is hetero-epitaxially grown on MgO substrate with the Cu$_3$Au-type cubic structure, which transforms to T-Mn$_3$Ga as the RF sputtering power increases. The magnetic and magnetotransport data show the antiferromagnetic transition at T$_N$ = 400 K for C-Mn$_3$Ga and the ferrimagnetic transition at T$_C$ = 820 K for T-Mn$_3$Ga. Furthermore, we find that the antiferromagnetic C-Mn$_3$Ga exhibits a higher electrical resistivity than the ferrimagnetic T-Mn$_3$Ga, which can be understood by spin-dependent scattering mechanism.
