Warning signs for tipping points (or critical transitions) have been very actively studied. Although the theory has been applied successfully in models and in experiments, for many complex systems, e.g., for tipping in climate systems, there are ongoing debates, when warning signs can be extracted from data. In this work, we provide an explanation, why these difficulties occur, and we significantly advance the general theory of warning signs for nonlinear stochastic dynamics. A key scenario deals with stochastic systems approaching a bifurcation point dynamically upon slow parameter variation. The stochastic fluctuations are generically able to probe the dynamics near a deterministic attractor to detect critical slowing down. Using scaling laws, one can then anticipate the distance to a bifurcation. Previous warning signs results assume that the noise is Markovian, most often even white. Here we study warning signs for non-Markovian systems including colored noise and $alpha$-regular Volterra processes (of which fractional Brownian motion and the Rosenblatt process are special cases). We prove that early-warning scaling laws can disappear completely or drastically change their exponent based upon the parameters controlling the noise process. This provides a clear explanation, why applying standard warning signs results to reduced models of complex systems may not agree with data-driven studies. We demonstrate our results numerically in the context of a box model of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

The image nonlocal self-similarity (NSS) prior refers to the fact that a local patch often has many nonlocal similar patches to it across the image. In this paper we apply such NSS prior to enhance the robust quaternion matrix completion (QMC) method and significantly improve the inpainting performance. A patch group based NSS prior learning scheme is proposed to learn explicit NSS models from natural color images. The NSS-based QMC algorithm computes an optimal low-rank approximation to the high-rank color image, resulting in high PSNR and SSIM measures and particularly the better visual quality. A new joint NSS-base QMC method is also presented to solve the color video inpainting problem based quaternion tensor representation. The numerical experiments on large-scale color images and videos indicate the advantages of NSS-based QMC over the state-of-the-art methods.

This work brings together Keldysh non-equilibrium quantum theory and thermodynamics, by showing that a real-time diagrammatic technique is an equivalent of stochastic thermodynamics for non-Markovian quantum machines (heat engines, refrigerators, etc ). Symmetries are found between quantum trajectories and their time-reverses on the Keldysh contour, for any interacting quantum system coupled to ideal reservoirs of electrons, phonons or photons. These lead to quantum fluctuation theorems the same as the well-known classical ones (Jarzynski and Crooks equalities, integral fluctuation theorem, etc), whether the systems dynamics are Markovian or not. Some of these are also shown to hold for non-factorizable initial states. The sequential tunnelling approximation and the cotunnelling approximation are both shown to respect the symmetries that ensure the fluctuation theorems. For all initial states, energy conservation ensures that the first law of thermodynamics holds on average, while the above symmetries ensures that the second law of thermodynamics holds on average, even if fluctuations violate it. In this work, we study a family of non-Markovian trees modeling populations where individuals live and reproduce independently with possibly time-dependent birth-rate and lifetime distribution. To this end, we use the coding process introduced by Lam bert. We show that, in our situation, this process is no longer a L{e}vy process but remains a Feller process and we give a complete characterization of its generator. This allows us to study the model through well-known Markov processes techniques. On one hand, introducing a scale function for such processes allows us to get necessary and sufficient conditions for extinction or non-extinction and to characterize the law of such trees conditioned on these events. On the other hand, using Lyapounov drift techniques , we get another set of, easily checkable, sufficient criteria for extinction or non-extinction and some tail estimates for the tree length. Finally, we also study scaling limits of such random trees and observe that the Bessel tree appears naturally.
We devise an explicit method to integrate $alpha$-stable stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with non-Lipschitz coefficients. To mitigate against numerical instabilities caused by unbounded increments of the Levy noise, we use a deterministic ma p which has the desired SDE as its homogenised limit. Moreover, our method naturally overcomes difficulties in expressing the Marcus integral explicitly. We present an example of an SDE with a natural boundary showing that our method respects the boundary whereas Euler-Maruyama discretisation fails to do so. As a by-product we devise an entirely deterministic method to construct $alpha$-stable laws.
We study quantitative stability of the solutions to Markovian quadratic reflected BSDEs with bounded terminal data. By virtue of the BMO martingale and change of measure techniques, we obtain the estimate of the variation of the solutions in terms of the difference of the driven forward processes. In addition, we propose a truncated discrete-time numerical scheme for quadratic reflected BSDEs, and obtain the explicit rate of convergence by applying the quantitative stability result.
