Interest point detection is one of the most fundamental and critical problems in computer vision and image processing. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive review on image feature information (IFI) extraction techniques for interest point detection. To systematically introduce how the existing interest point detection methods extract IFI from an input image, we propose a taxonomy of the IFI extraction techniques for interest point detection. According to this taxonomy, we discuss different types of IFI extraction techniques for interest point detection. Furthermore, we identify the main unresolved issues related to the existing IFI extraction techniques for interest point detection and any interest point detection methods that have not been discussed before. The existing popular datasets and evaluation standards are provided and the performances for eighteen state-of-the-art approaches are evaluated and discussed. Moreover, future research directions on IFI extraction techniques for interest point detection are elaborated.

With the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and image scanning technology, Whole-slide Image (WSI) scanners are widely used in the field of pathological diagnosis. Therefore, WSI analysis has become the key to modern digital pathology. Sin ce 2004, WSI has been used more and more in CAD. Since machine vision methods are usually based on semi-automatic or fully automatic computers, they are highly efficient and labor-saving. The combination of WSI and CAD technologies for segmentation, classification, and detection helps histopathologists obtain more stable and quantitative analysis results, save labor costs and improve diagnosis objectivity. This paper reviews the methods of WSI analysis based on machine learning. Firstly, the development status of WSI and CAD methods are introduced. Secondly, we discuss publicly available WSI datasets and evaluation metrics for segmentation, classification, and detection tasks. Then, the latest development of machine learning in WSI segmentation, classification, and detection are reviewed continuously. Finally, the existing methods are studied, the applicabilities of the analysis methods are analyzed, and the application prospects of the analysis methods in this field are forecasted.
As an important technology in 3D mapping, autonomous driving, and robot navigation, LiDAR odometry is still a challenging task. Appropriate data structure and unsupervised deep learning are the keys to achieve an easy adjusted LiDAR odometry solution with high performance. Utilizing compact 2D structured spherical ring projection model and voxel model which preserves the original shape of input data, we propose a fully unsupervised Convolutional Auto-Encoder based LiDAR Odometry (CAE-LO) that detects interest points from spherical ring data using 2D CAE and extracts features from multi-resolution voxel model using 3D CAE. We make several key contributions: 1) experiments based on KITTI dataset show that our interest points can capture more local details to improve the matching success rate on unstructured scenarios and our features outperform state-of-the-art by more than 50% in matching inlier ratio; 2) besides, we also propose a keyframe selection method based on matching pairs transferring, an odometry refinement method for keyframes based on extended interest points from spherical rings, and a backward pose update method. The odometry refinement experiments verify the proposed ideas feasibility and effectiveness.

Yelp has been one of the most popular local service search engine in US since 2004. It is powered by crowd-sourced text reviews and photo reviews. Restaurant customers and business owners upload photo images to Yelp, including reviewing or advertisin g either food, drinks, or inside and outside decorations. It is obviously not so effective that labels for food photos rely on human editors, which is an issue should be addressed by innovative machine learning approaches. In this paper, we present a simple but effective approach which can identify up to ten kinds of food via raw photos from the challenge dataset. We use 1) image pre-processing techniques, including filtering and image augmentation, 2) feature extraction via convolutional neural networks (CNN), and 3) three ways of classification algorithms. Then, we illustrate the classification accuracy by tuning parameters for augmentations, CNN, and classification. Our experimental results show this simple but effective approach to identify up to 10 food types from images.

Image feature extraction and matching is a fundamental but computation intensive task in machine vision. This paper proposes a novel FPGA-based embedded system to accelerate feature extraction and matching. It implements SURF feature point detection and BRIEF feature descriptor construction and matching. For binocular stereo vision, feature matching includes both tracking matching and stereo matching, which simultaneously provide feature point correspondences and parallax information. Our system is evaluated on a ZYNQ XC7Z045 FPGA. The result demonstrates that it can process binocular video data at a high frame rate (640$times$480 @ 162fps). Moreover, an extensive test proves our system has robustness for image compression, blurring and illumination.
Pedestrian detection methods have been significantly improved with the development of deep convolutional neural networks. Nevertheless, robustly detecting pedestrians with a large variant on sizes and with occlusions remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a gated multi-layer convolutional feature extraction method which can adaptively generate discriminative features for candidate pedestrian regions. The proposed gated feature extraction framework consists of squeeze units, gate units and a concatenation layer which perform feature dimension squeezing, feature elements manipulation and convolutional features combination from multiple CNN layers, respectively. We proposed two different gate models which can manipulate the regional feature maps in a channel-wise selection manner and a spatial-wise selection manner, respectively. Experiments on the challenging CityPersons dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, especially on detecting those small-size and occluded pedestrians.
