Organic salts represent an ideal experimental playground for studying the interplay between magnetic and charge degrees of freedom, which has culminated in the discovery of several spin-liquid candidates, such as $kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ ($kappa$-Cu). Recent theoretical studies indicate the possibility of chiral spin liquids stabilized by ring-exchange, but the parent states with chiral magnetic order have not been observed in this material family. In this work, we discuss the properties of the recently synthesized $kappa$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$ ($kappa$-Mn). Based on analysis of specific heat, magnetic torque, and NMR measurements combined with ab initio calculations, we identify a spin-vortex crystal order. These observations definitively confirm the importance of ring-exchange in these materials, and support the proposed chiral spin-liquid scenario for triangular lattice organics.

We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO$_4$ to be spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and absence of magnetic thermal conductivity . More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature a.c. susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion to hold also for its sister compound YbMgGaO$_4$, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We consider disorder and frustration to be the main driving force for the spin-glass phase.
The trigonal compound EuSn2As2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature TN = 24 K. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn2As2 and the evol ution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H,T), magnetic susceptibility chi(H,T) = M(T)/H, heat capacity Cp(H,T), and electrical resistivity rho(H,T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and chi(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below TN =23.5(2) K, where the Eu{2+} spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The chi(H{ab},T) and chi(H{c},T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ~ 0.15 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the chi(T), Cp(T) and rho(H,T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice TN. The rho(H,T) of the compound does not reflect a contribution of the topological state, but rather is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering. The magnetic phase diagrams for both H||c and H||ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the TN(H), chi(H,T), Cp(H,T), and rho(H,T) data.
Here, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of a Yb-based triangular-lattice compound LiYbS$_2$. At low temperatures, it features an effective spin-$frac{1}{2}$ state due to the combined effect of crystal electric field and spin orbit coupl ing. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance experiments reveal the absence of magnetic long range ordering down to 2~K, which suggests a possible quantum spin liquid ground state. A dominant antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour exchange interaction $J/k_{rm B}simeq$ 5.3~K could be extracted form the magnetic susceptibility. The NMR linewidth analysis yields the coupling constant between the Li nuclei and Yb$^{3+}$ ions which was found to be purely dipolar in nature.
We study the ground state properties, the electronic excitations and lattice dynamics in spin-liquid candidate TbInO$_3$. By employing polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy we define the inter- and intra-multiplet excitations, and establish the lo w-energy crystal-field (CF) level scheme. In particular, we demonstrate that the ground state of the Tb$^{3+}$ ions is a non-Kramers doublet, and relate the enhanced linewidth of the CF modes to the magnetic fluctuations near the spin-liquid ground state. We identify all 38 allowed Raman-active phonon modes at low temperature. Moreover, we observe hybrid vibronic excitations involving coupled CF and low-lying phonon modes, suggesting strong spin-lattice dynamics. We develop a model for vibronic states and obtain the parameters of the bare responses and coupling strength. We further demonstrate that the obtained CF level scheme is consistent with specific heat data.
The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard (TLU) model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2)$_{rm{spin}} otimes $U(1)$_{rm{charge}}$ symmetries implemented, we study the TLU model defined on the long cylinder geometry with circumference $W=4$. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction $9 lesssim U / t lesssim 10.75$, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length $L$ increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the large degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.
