Although tremendous strides have been made in uncontrolled face detection, efficient face detection with a low computation cost as well as high precision remains an open challenge. In this paper, we point out that training data sampling and computation distribution strategies are the keys to efficient and accurate face detection. Motivated by these observations, we introduce two simple but effective methods (1) Sample Redistribution (SR), which augments training samples for the most needed stages, based on the statistics of benchmark datasets; and (2) Computation Redistribution (CR), which reallocates the computation between the backbone, neck and head of the model, based on a meticulously defined search methodology. Extensive experiments conducted on WIDER FACE demonstrate the state-of-the-art efficiency-accuracy trade-off for the proposed scrfd family across a wide range of compute regimes. In particular, scrfdf{34} outperforms the best competitor, TinaFace, by $3.86%$ (AP at hard set) while being more than emph{3$times$ faster} on GPUs with VGA-resolution images. We also release our code to facilitate future research.

Recently, face recognition in the wild has achieved remarkable success and one key engine is the increasing size of training data. For example, the largest face dataset, WebFace42M contains about 2 million identities and 42 million faces. However, a massive number of faces raise the constraints in training time, computing resources, and memory cost. The current research on this problem mainly focuses on designing an efficient Fully-connected layer (FC) to reduce GPU memory consumption caused by a large number of identities. In this work, we relax these constraints by resolving the redundancy problem of the up-to-date face datasets caused by the greedily collecting operation (i.e. the core-set selection perspective). As the first attempt in this perspective on the face recognition problem, we find that existing methods are limited in both performance and efficiency. For superior cost-efficiency, we contribute a novel filtering strategy dubbed Face-NMS. Face-NMS works on feature space and simultaneously considers the local and global sparsity in generating core sets. In practice, Face-NMS is analogous to Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) in the object detection community. It ranks the faces by their potential contribution to the overall sparsity and filters out the superfluous face in the pairs with high similarity for local sparsity. With respect to the efficiency aspect, Face-NMS accelerates the whole pipeline by applying a smaller but sufficient proxy dataset in training the proxy model. As a result, with Face-NMS, we successfully scale down the WebFace42M dataset to 60% while retaining its performance on the main benchmarks, offering a 40% resource-saving and 1.64 times acceleration. The code is publicly available for reference at https://github.com/HuangJunJie2017/Face-NMS.
While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have significantly boosted the performance of face related algorithms, maintaining accuracy and efficiency simultaneously in practical use remains challenging. Recent study shows that using a cascade of hour glass modules which consist of a number of bottom-up and top-down convolutional layers can extract facial structural information for face alignment to improve accuracy. However, previous studies have shown that features produced by shallow convolutional layers are highly correspond to edges. These features could be directly used to provide the structural information without addition cost. Motivated by this intuition, we propose an efficient multitask face alignment, face tracking and head pose estimation network (ATPN). Specifically, we introduce a shortcut connection between shallow-layer features and deep-layer features to provide the structural information for face alignment and apply the CoordConv to the last few layers to provide coordinate information. The predicted facial landmarks enable us to generate a cheap heatmap which contains both geometric and appearance information for head pose estimation and it also provides attention clues for face tracking. Moreover, the face tracking task saves us the face detection procedure for each frame, which is significant to boost performance for video-based tasks. The proposed framework is evaluated on four benchmark datasets, WFLW, 300VW, WIDER Face and 300W-LP. The experimental results show that the ATPN achieves improved performance compared to previous state-of-the-art methods while having less number of parameters and FLOPS.

Face detection has witnessed significant progress due to the advances of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Its central issue in recent years is how to improve the detection performance of tiny faces. To this end, many recent works propose so me specific strategies, redesign the architecture and introduce new loss functions for tiny object detection. In this report, we start from the popular one-stage RetinaNet approach and apply some recent tricks to obtain a high performance face detector. Specifically, we apply the Intersection over Union (IoU) loss function for regression, employ the two-step classification and regression for detection, revisit the data augmentation based on data-anchor-sampling for training, utilize the max-out operation for classification and use the multi-scale testing strategy for inference. As a consequence, the proposed face detection method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the most popular and challenging face detection benchmark WIDER FACE dataset.
We propose real-time, six degrees of freedom (6DoF), 3D face pose estimation without face detection or landmark localization. We observe that estimating the 6DoF rigid transformation of a face is a simpler problem than facial landmark detection, ofte n used for 3D face alignment. In addition, 6DoF offers more information than face bounding box labels. We leverage these observations to make multiple contributions: (a) We describe an easily trained, efficient, Faster R-CNN--based model which regresses 6DoF pose for all faces in the photo, without preliminary face detection. (b) We explain how pose is converted and kept consistent between the input photo and arbitrary crops created while training and evaluating our model. (c) Finally, we show how face poses can replace detection bounding box training labels. Tests on AFLW2000-3D and BIWI show that our method runs at real-time and outperforms state of the art (SotA) face pose estimators. Remarkably, our method also surpasses SotA models of comparable complexity on the WIDER FACE detection benchmark, despite not been optimized on bounding box labels.
Face detection in low light scenarios is challenging but vital to many practical applications, e.g., surveillance video, autonomous driving at night. Most existing face detectors heavily rely on extensive annotations, while collecting data is time-co nsuming and laborious. To reduce the burden of building new datasets for low light conditions, we make full use of existing normal light data and explore how to adapt face detectors from normal light to low light. The challenge of this task is that the gap between normal and low light is too huge and complex for both pixel-level and object-level. Therefore, most existing low-light enhancement and adaptation methods do not achieve desirable performance. To address the issue, we propose a joint High-Low Adaptation (HLA) framework. Through a bidirectional low-level adaptation and multi-task high-level adaptation scheme, our HLA-Face outperforms state-of-the-art methods even without using dark face labels for training.
