The Anderson localization of thermal phonons has been shown only in few nano-structures with strong random disorder by the exponential decay of transmission to zero and a thermal conductivity maximum when increasing system length. In this work, we present a path to demonstrate the phonon localization with distinctive features in graded superlattices with short-range order and long-range disorder. A thermal conductivity minimum with system length appears due to the exponential decay of transmission to a non-zero constant, which is a feature of partial phonon localization caused by the moderate disorder. We provide clear evidence of localization through the combined analysis of the participation ratio, transmission, and real-space phonon number density distribution based on our quantum transport simulation. The present work would promote heat conduction engineering by localization via the wave nature of phonons.

We study the thermal conductivity in disordered $s$-wave superconductors. Expanding on previous works for normal metals, we develop a formalism that tackles particle diffusion as well as the weak localization (WL) and weak anti-localization (WAL) eff ects. Using a Greens functions diagrammatic technique, which takes into account the superconducting nature of the system by working in Nambu space, we identify the systems low-energy modes, the diffuson and the Cooperon. The time scales that characterize the diffusive regime are energy dependent; this is in contrast with the the normal state, where the relevant time scale is the mean free time $tau_e$, independent of energy. The energy dependence introduces a novel energy scale $varepsilon_*$, which in disordered superconductors ($tau_e Deltall 1$, with $Delta$ the gap) is given by $varepsilon_* = sqrt{Delta/tau_e}$. From the diffusive behavior of the low-energy modes, we obtain the WL correction to the thermal conductivity. We give explicitly expressions in two dimensions. We determine the regimes in which the correction depends explicitly on $varepsilon_*$ and propose an optimal regime to verify our results in an experiment.
Knowledge of the mean free path distribution of heat-carrying phonons is key to understanding phonon-mediated thermal transport. We demonstrate that thermal conductivity measurements of thin membranes spanning a wide thickness range can be used to ch aracterize how bulk thermal conductivity is distributed over phonon mean free paths. A non-contact transient thermal grating technique was used to measure the thermal conductivity of suspended Si membranes ranging from 15 to 1500 nm in thickness. A decrease in the thermal conductivity from 74% to 13% of the bulk value is observed over this thickness range, which is attributed to diffuse phonon boundary scattering. Due to the well-defined relation between the membrane thickness and phonon mean free path suppression, combined with the range and accuracy of the measurements, we can reconstruct the bulk thermal conductivity accumulation vs. phonon mean free path, and compare with theoretical models.

The Landau level spectrum of graphene superlattices is studied using a tight-binding approach. We consider non-interacting particles moving on a hexagonal lattice with an additional one-dimensional superlattice made up of periodic square potential ba rriers, which are oriented along the zig-zag or along the arm-chair directions of graphene. In the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, such systems can be described by a set of one-dimensional tight-binding equations, the Harper equations. The qualitative behavior of the energy spectrum with respect to the strength of the superlattice potential depends on the relation between the superlattice period and the magnetic length. When the potential barriers are oriented along the arm-chair direction of graphene, we find for strong magnetic fields that the zeroth Landau level of graphene splits into two well separated sublevels, if the width of the barriers is smaller than the magnetic length. In this situation, which persists even in the presence of disorder, a plateau with zero Hall conductivity can be observed around the Dirac point. This Landau level splitting is a true lattice effect that cannot be obtained from the generally used continuum Dirac-fermion model.
In recent years, nanostructuring of dielectric and semiconducting crystals has enhanced controllability of their thermal conductivity. To carry out computational material search for nanostructured materials with desirable thermal conductivity, a key property is the thermal conductivity spectrum of the original single crystal, which determines the appropriate length scale of nanostructures and mutual adaptability of different kinds of nanostructures. Although the first-principles phonon transport calculations have become accessible, the anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations are still heavy to scan many materials. To this end, we have developed an empirical model that describes the thermal conductivity spectrum in terms only of harmonic phonon properties and bulk thermal conductivity. The model was tested for several crystals with different structures and thermal conductivities, and was confirmed to reproduce the overall profiles of thermal conductivity spectra and their anharmonic calculations.
Heterostructures consisting of alternating GaN/AlN epitaxial layers represent the building-blocks of state-of-the-art devices employed for active cooling and energy-saving lightning. Insights into the heat conduction of these structures are essential in the perspective of improving the heat management for prospective applications. Here, the cross-plane (perpendicular to the samples surface) thermal conductivity of GaN/AlN superlattices as a function of the layers thickness is established by employing the $3omega$-method. Moreover, the role of interdiffusion at the interfaces on the phonon scattering is taken into account in the modelling and data treatment. It is found, that the cross-plane thermal conductivity of the epitaxial heterostructures can be driven to values as low as 5.9 W/(m$cdot$K) comparable with those reported for amorphous films, thus opening wide perspectives for optimized heat management in III-nitride-based epitaxial multilayers.
