As a key enabler for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), spatial multiplexing relies on massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) technology to serve the massive number of user equipments (UEs). To exploit spatial multiplexing, accurate channel estimation through pilot signals is needed. In mMTC systems, it is impractical to allocate a unique orthogonal pilot sequence to each UE as it would require too long pilot sequences, degrading the spectral efficiency. This work addresses the design of channel features from correlated fading channels to assist the pilot assignment in multi-sector mMTC systems under pilot reuse of orthogonal sequences. In order to reduce pilot collisions and to enable pilot reuse, we propose to extract features from the channel covariance matrices that reflect the level of orthogonality between the UEs channels. Two features are investigated: covariance matrix distance (CMD) feature and CMD-aided channel charting (CC) feature. In terms of symbol error rate and achievable rate, the CC-based feature shows superior performance than the CMD-based feature and baseline pilot assignment algorithms.

In this work we study the coexistence in the same Radio Access Network (RAN) of two generic services present in the Fifth Generation (5G) of wireless communication systems: enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) and massive Machine-Type Communications (mMT C). eMBB services are requested for applications that demand extremely high data rates and moderate requirements on latency and reliability, whereas mMTC enables applications for connecting a massive number of low-power and low-complexity devices. The coexistence of both services is enabled by means of network slicing and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) with Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) decoding. Under the orthogonal slicing, the radio resources are exclusively allocated to each service, while in the non-orthogonal slicing the traffics from both services overlap in the same radio resources. We evaluate the uplink performance of both services in a scenario with a multi-antenna Base Station (BS). Our simulation results show that the performance gains obtained through multiple receive antennas are more accentuated for the non-orthogonal slicing than for the orthogonal allocation of resources, such that the non-orthogonal slicing outperforms its orthogonal counterpart in terms of achievable data rates or number of connected devices as the number of receive antennas increases.
In multi-cell massive MIMO systems, channel estimation is deteriorated by pilot contamination and the effects of pilot contamination become more severe due to hardware impairments. In this paper, we propose a joint pilot design and channel estimation based on deep residual learning in order to mitigate the effects of pilot contamination under the consideration of hardware impairments. We first investigate a conventional linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) based channel estimator to suppress the interference caused by pilot contamination. After that, a deep learning based pilot design is proposed to minimize the mean square error (MSE) of LMMSE channel estimation, which is utilized to the joint pilot design and channel estimator for transfer learning approach. For the channel estimator, we use a deep residual learning which extracts the features of interference caused by pilot contamination and eliminates them to estimate the channel information. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint pilot design and channel estimator outperforms the conventional approach in multi-cell massive MIMO scenarios. Furthermore, the joint pilot design and channel estimator using transfer learning enhances the estimation performance by reducing the effects of pilot contamination when the prior knowledge of pilot contamination cannot be exploited.
In this letter, a low-complexity iterative detector with frequency domain equalization is proposed for generalized spatial modulation (GSM) aided single carrier (SC) transmissions operating in frequency selective channels. The detector comprises thre e main separate tasks namely, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalization, active antenna detection and symbol wise demodulation. This approach makes the detector suitable for a broad range of MIMO configurations, which includes single-user and multiuser scenarios, as well as arbitrary signal constellations. Simulation results show that the receiver can cope with the intersymbol interference induced by severe time dispersive channels and operate in difficult underdetermined scenarios where the total number of transmitter antennas is substantially larger than the number of receiver antennas.
Three dimensional (3D) resource reuse is an important design requirement for the prospective 6G wireless communication systems. Hence, we propose a cooperative 3D beamformer for use in 3D space. Explicitly, we harness multiple base station antennas f or joint zero forcing transmit pre-coding for beaming the transmit signals in specific 3D directions. The technique advocated is judiciously configured for use in both cell-based and cell-free wireless architectures. We evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme using the novel metric of Volumetric Spectral Efficiency (VSE). We also characterized the performance of the scheme in terms of its spectral efficiency (SE) and Bit Error Rate (BER) through extensive simulation studies.
Estimation in few-bit MIMO systems is challenging, since the received signals are nonlinearly distorted by the low-resolution ADCs. In this paper, we propose a deep learning framework for channel estimation, data detection, and pilot signal design to address the nonlinearity in such systems. The proposed channel estimation and data detection networks are model-driven and have special structures that take advantage of the domain knowledge in the few-bit quantization process. While the first data detection network, namely B-DetNet, is based on a linearized model obtained from the Bussgang decomposition, the channel estimation network and the second data detection network, namely FBM-CENet and FBM-DetNet respectively, rely on the original quantized system model. To develop FBM-CENet and FBM-DetNet, the maximum-likelihood channel estimation and data detection problems are reformulated to overcome the vanishing gradient issue. An important feature of the proposed FBM-CENet structure is that the pilot matrix is integrated into its weight matrices of the channel estimator. Thus, training the proposed FBM-CENet enables a joint optimization of both the channel estimator at the base station and the pilot signal transmitted from the users. Simulation results show significant performance gain in estimation accuracy by the proposed deep learning framework.
