Face image manipulation via three-dimensional guidance has been widely applied in various interactive scenarios due to its semantically-meaningful understanding and user-friendly controllability. However, existing 3D-morphable-model-based manipulation methods are not directly applicable to out-of-domain faces, such as non-photorealistic paintings, cartoon portraits, or even animals, mainly due to the formidable difficulties in building the model for each specific face domain. To overcome this challenge, we propose, as far as we know, the first method to manipulate faces in arbitrary domains using human 3DMM. This is achieved through two major steps: 1) disentangled mapping from 3DMM parameters to the latent space embedding of a pre-trained StyleGAN2 that guarantees disentangled and precise controls for each semantic attribute; and 2) cross-domain adaptation that bridges domain discrepancies and makes human 3DMM applicable to out-of-domain faces by enforcing a consistent latent space embedding. Experiments and comparisons demonstrate the superiority of our high-quality semantic manipulation method on a variety of face domains with all major 3D facial attributes controllable: pose, expression, shape, albedo, and illumination. Face presentation attack detection (PAD) has been an urgent problem to be solved in the face recognition systems. Conventional approaches usually assume the testing and training are within the same domain; as a result, they may not generalize well in to unseen scenarios because the representations learned for PAD may overfit to the subjects in the training set. In light of this, we propose an efficient disentangled representation learning for cross-domain face PAD. Our approach consists of disentangled representation learning (DR-Net) and multi-domain learning (MD-Net). DR-Net learns a pair of encoders via generative models that can disentangle PAD informative features from subject discriminative features. The disentangled features from different domains are fed to MD-Net which learns domain-independent features for the final cross-domain face PAD task. Extensive experiments on several public datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for cross-domain PAD.

Despite recent breakthroughs in deep learning methods for image lighting enhancement, they are inferior when applied to portraits because 3D facial information is ignored in their models. To address this, we present a novel deep learning framework fo r portrait lighting enhancement based on 3D facial guidance. Our framework consists of two stages. In the first stage, corrected lighting parameters are predicted by a network from the input bad lighting image, with the assistance of a 3D morphable model and a differentiable renderer. Given the predicted lighting parameter, the differentiable renderer renders a face image with corrected shading and texture, which serves as the 3D guidance for learning image lighting enhancement in the second stage. To better exploit the long-range correlations between the input and the guidance, in the second stage, we design an image-to-image translation network with a novel transformer architecture, which automatically produces a lighting-enhanced result. Experimental results on the FFHQ dataset and in-the-wild images show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both quantitative metrics and visual quality. We present a self-supervised learning approach to learning monocular 3D face reconstruction with a pose guidance network (PGN). First, we unveil the bottleneck of pose estimation in prior parametric 3D face learning methods, and propose to utilize 3D face landmarks for estimating pose parameters. With our specially designed PGN, our model can learn from both faces with fully labeled 3D landmarks and unlimited unlabeled in-the-wild face images. Our network is further augmented with a self-supervised learning scheme, which exploits face geometry information embedded in multiple frames of the same person, to alleviate the ill-posed nature of regressing 3D face geometry from a single image. These three insights yield a single approach that combines the complementary strengths of parametric model learning and data-driven learning techniques. We conduct a rigorous evaluation on the challenging AFLW2000-3D, Florence and FaceWarehouse datasets, and show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art for all metrics.
In this work we propose a model that can manipulate individual visual attributes of objects in a real scene using examples of how respective attribute manipulations affect the output of a simulation. As an example, we train our model to manipulate th e expression of a human face using nonphotorealistic 3D renders of a face with varied expression. Our model manages to preserve all other visual attributes of a real face, such as head orientation, even though this and other attributes are not labeled in either real or synthetic domain. Since our model learns to manipulate a specific property in isolation using only synthetic demonstrations of such manipulations without explicitly provided labels, it can be applied to shape, texture, lighting, and other properties that are difficult to measure or represent as real-valued vectors. We measure the degree to which our model preserves other attributes of a real image when a single specific attribute is manipulated. We use digit datasets to analyze how discrepancy in attribute distributions affects the performance of our model, and demonstrate results in a far more difficult setting: learning to manipulate real human faces using nonphotorealistic 3D renders.

Face recognition is one of the most studied research topics in the community. In recent years, the research on face recognition has shifted to using 3D facial surfaces, as more discriminating features can be represented by the 3D geometric informatio n. This survey focuses on reviewing the 3D face recognition techniques developed in the past ten years which are generally categorized into conventional methods and deep learning methods. The categorized techniques are evaluated using detailed descriptions of the representative works. The advantages and disadvantages of the techniques are summarized in terms of accuracy, complexity and robustness to face variation (expression, pose and occlusions, etc). The main contribution of this survey is that it comprehensively covers both conventional methods and deep learning methods on 3D face recognition. In addition, a review of available 3D face databases is provided, along with the discussion of future research challenges and directions.
