Sampling equilibrium ensembles of dense polymer mixtures is a paradigmatically hard problem in computational physics, even in lattice-based models. Here, we develop a formalism based on interacting binary tensors that allows for tackling this problem using quantum annealing machines. Our approach is general in that properties such as self-avoidance, branching, and looping can all be specified in terms of quadratic interactions of the tensors. Microstates realizations of different lattice polymer ensembles are then seamlessly generated by solving suitable discrete energy-minimization problems. This approach enables us to capitalize on the strengths of quantum annealing machines, as we demonstrate by sampling polymer mixtures from low to high densities, using the D-Wave quantum computer. Our systematic approach offers a promising avenue to harness the rapid development of quantum computers for sampling discrete models of filamentous soft-matter systems.

Using Langevin dynamics simulations, we investigate the dynamics of a flexible polymer translocation into a confined area under a driving force through a nanopore. We choose an ellipsoidal shape for the confinement and consider the dependence of the asymmetry of the ellipsoid measured by the aspect ratio on the translocation time. Compared with an isotropic confinement (sphere), an anisotropic confinement (ellipsoid) with the same volume slows down the translocation, and the translocation time increases with increasing the aspect ratio of the ellipsoid. We further find that it takes different time for polymer translocation into the same ellipsoid through major-axis and minor-axis directions, depending on the average density of the whole chain in the ellipsoid, $phi$. For $phi$ lower than a critical value $phi_c$, the translocation through minor axis is faster, and vice versa. These complicated behaviors are interpreted by the degree of the confinement and anisotropic confinement induced folding of the translocated chain.
We present a comprehensive investigation of polymer diffusion in the semidilute regime by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Using single-labeled polystyrene chains, FCS leads to the self-diffusion coeffic ient while DLS gives the cooperative diffusion coefficient for exactly the same molecular weights and concentrations. Using FCS we observe a new fast mode in the semidilute entangled concentration regime beyond the slower mode which is due to self-diffusion. Comparison of FCS data with data obtained by DLS on the same polymers shows that the second mode observed in FCS is identical to the cooperative diffusion coefficient measured with DLS. An in-depth analysis and a comparison with current theoretical models demonstrates that the new cooperative mode observed in FCS is due to the effective long-range interaction of the chains through the transient entanglement network.
Anyon systems are studied in connection with several interesting applications including high $T_C$ superconductivity and topological quantum computing. In this work we show that these systems can be realized starting from directed polymers braided to gether to form a nontrivial link configuration belonging to the topological class of plats. The statistical sum of a such plat is related here to the partition function of a two-component anyon gas. The constraints that preserve the topological configuration of the plat are imposed on the polymer trajectories using the so-called Gauss linking number, a topological invariant that has already been well studied in polymer physics. Due to these constraints, short-range forces act on the monomers or, equivalently, on the anyon quasiparticles in a way that closely resembles the appearance of reaction forces in the constrained systems of classical mechanics. If the polymers are homogeneous, the anyon system reaches a self-dual point, in which these forces vanish exactly. A class of self-dual solutions that minimize the energy of the anyons is derived. The two anyon gas discussed here obeys an abelian statistics, while for quantum computing it is known that nonabelian anyons are necessary. However, this is a limitation due to the use of the Gauss linking invariant to impose the topological constraints, which is a poor topological invariant and is thus unable to capture the nonabelian characteristics of the braided polymer chains. A more refined treatment of the topological constraints would require more sophisticated topological invariants, but so far their application to the statistical mechanics of linked polymers is an open problem.
The organization of nano-particles inside grafted polymer layers is governed by the interplay of polymer-induced entropic interactions and the action of externally applied fields. Earlier work had shown that strong external forces can drive the forma tion of colloidal structures in polymer brushes. Here we show that external fields are not essential to obtain such colloidal patterns: we report Monte Carlo and Molecular dynamics simulations that demonstrate that ordered structures can be achieved by compressing a `sandwich of two grafted polymer layers, or by squeezing a coated nanotube, with nano-particles in between. We show that the pattern formation can be efficiently controlled by the applied pressure, while the characteristic length--scale, i.e. the typical width of the patterns, is sensitive to the length of the polymers. Based on the results of the simulations, we derive an approximate equation of state for nano-sandwiches.
We investigate the crystallization mechanism of a single, flexible homopolymer chain with short range attractions. For a sufficiently narrow attractive well, the system undergoes a first-order like freezing transition from an expanded disordered coil to a compact crystalline state. Based on a maximum likelihood analysis of committor values computed for configurations obtained by Wang-Landau sampling, we construct a non-linear string reaction coordinate for the coil-to-crystal transition. In contrast to a linear reaction coordinate, the string reaction coordinate captures the effect of different degrees of freedom controlling different stages of the transition. Our analysis indicates that a combination of the energy and the global crystallinity parameter Q6 provide the most accurate measure for the progress of the transition. While the crystallinity parameter Q6 is most relevant in the initial stages of the crystallization, the later stages are dominated by a decrease in the potential energy.
