The exponential growth of the number of multihomed mobile devices is changing the way how we can connect to the Internet. Our mobile devices are demanding for more network resources, in terms of traffic volume and QoS requirements. Unfortunately, it is very hard to a multihomed device to be simultaneously connected to the network through multiple links. The current work enhances the network access of multihomed devices agnostically to the deployed access technologies. This enhancement is achieved by using simultaneously all of the mobile devices interfaces, and by routing each individual data flow through the most convenient access technology. The proposed solution is only deployed at the network side and it extends Proxy Mobile IPv6 with flow mobility in a completely transparent way to mobile nodes. In fact, it gives particular attention to the handover mechanisms, by improving the detection and attachment of nodes in the network, with the inclusion of the IEEE 802.21 standard in the solution. This provides the necessary implementation and integration details to extend a network topology with femtocell devices. Each femtocell is equipped with various network interfaces supporting a diverse set of access technologies. There is also a decision entity that manages individually each data flow according to its QoS / QoE requisites. The proposed solution has been developed and extensively tested with a real prototype. Evaluation results evidence that the overhead for using the solution is negligible as compared to the offered advantages such as: the support of flow mobility, the fulfil of VoIP functional requisites, the session continuity in spite of flows mobility, its low overhead, its high scalability, and the complete transparency of the proposed solution to the user terminals.

The next generations of mobile networks will be deployed as ultra-dense networks, to match the demand for increased capacity and the challenges that communications in the higher portion of the spectrum (i.e., the mmWave band) introduce. Ultra-dense n etworks, however, require pervasive, high-capacity backhaul solutions, and deploying fiber optic to all base stations is generally considered to be too expensive for network operators. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has thus introduced Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB), a wireless backhaul solution in which the access and backhaul links share the same hardware, protocol stack, and also spectrum. The multiplexing of different links in the same frequency bands, however, introduces interference and capacity sharing issues, thus calling for the introduction of advanced scheduling and coordination schemes. This paper proposes a semi-centralized resource allocation scheme for IAB networks, designed to be flexible, with low complexity, and compliant with the 3GPP IAB specifications. We develop a version of the Maximum Weighted Matching (MWM) problem that can be applied on a spanning tree that represents the IAB network and whose complexity is linear in the number of IAB-nodes. The proposed solution is compared with state-of-the-art distributed approaches through end-to-end, full-stack system-level simulations with a 3GPP-compliant channel model, protocol stack, and a diverse set of user applications. The results show how that our scheme can increase the throughput of cell-edge users up to 5 times, while decreasing the overall network congestion with an end-to-end delay reduction of up to 25 times.
Fast handover for Proxy Mobile IPv6 (FPMIPv6) can reduce handover delay and packet loss compared with Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6). However, FPMIPv6 still cannot handle heterogeneous handovers due to the lack of unified Layer 2 triggering mechanism alo ng with the booming of emerging wireless technologies. Media Independent Handover (MIH) can provide heterogeneous handover support, and a lot of integration solutions have been proposed for it. However, most of them focus on the integration of MIH and PMIPv6, and require the additional mechanisms, which are out of the scope the MIH and difficult to standardize the operations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an integration solution of FPMIPv6 and MIH by extending the existing MIH standards, and adopt the city section mobility model to analyze its performance under different scenarios. The analytical results show that the proposed solution is capable of reducing the handover delay and the signaling cost compared with the standard as well as the fast handover solutions.
In this paper, our recently proposed mobile-conductance based analytical framework is extended to the sparse settings, thus offering a unified tool for analyzing information spreading in mobile networks. A penalty factor is identified for information spreading in sparse networks as compared to the connected scenario, which is then intuitively interpreted and verified by simulations. With the analytical results obtained, the mobility-connectivity tradeoff is quantitatively analyzed to determine how much mobility may be exploited to make up for network connectivity deficiency.
The Fifth Generation (5G) wireless service of sensor networks involves significant challenges when dealing with the coordination of ever-increasing number of devices accessing shared resources. This has drawn major interest from the research communit y as many existing works focus on the radio access network congestion control to efficiently manage resources in the context of device-to-device (D2D) interaction in huge sensor networks. In this context, this paper pioneers a study on the impact of D2D link reliability in group-assisted random access protocols, by shedding the light on beneficial performance and potential limitations of approaches of this kind against tunable parameters such as group size, number of sensors and reliability of D2D links. Additionally, we leverage on the association with a Geolocation Database (GDB) capability to assist the grouping decisions by drawing parallels with recent regulatory-driven initiatives around GDBs and arguing benefits of the suggested proposal. Finally, the proposed method is approved to significantly reduce the delay over random access channels, by means of an exhaustive simulation campaign.
In Federated Learning (FL), a global statistical model is developed by encouraging mobile users to perform the model training on their local data and aggregating the output local model parameters in an iterative manner. However, due to limited energy and computation capability at the mobile devices, the performance of the model training is always at stake to meet the objective of local energy minimization. In this regard, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC)-enabled FL addresses the tradeoff between the model performance and the energy consumption of the mobile devices by allowing users to offload a portion of their local dataset to an edge server for the model training. Since the edge server has high computation capability, the time consumption of the model training at the edge server is insignificant. However, the time consumption for dataset offloading from mobile users to the edge server has a significant impact on the total time consumption. Thus, resource management in MEC-enabled FL is challenging, where the objective is to reduce the total time consumption while saving the energy consumption of the mobile devices. In this paper, we formulate an energy-aware resource management for MEC-enabled FL in which the model training loss and the total time consumption are jointly minimized, while considering the energy limitation of mobile devices. In addition, we recast the formulated problem as a Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problem (GNEP) to capture the coupling constraints between the radio resource management and dataset offloading. We then analyze the impact of the dataset offloading and computing resource allocation on the model training loss, time, and the energy consumption.
