In order to predict and analyze turbulent transport in tokamaks, it is important to model transport that arises from microinstabilities. For this task, quasilinear codes have been developed that seek to calculate particle, angular momentum, and heat fluxes both quickly and accurately. In this tutorial, we present a derivation of one such code known as QuaLiKiz, a quasilinear gyrokinetic transport code. The goal of this derivation is to provide a self-contained and complete description of the underlying physics and mathematics of QuaLiKiz from first principles. This work serves both as a comprehensive overview of QuaLiKiz specifically as well as an illustration for deriving quasilinear models in general.

A new analytically and numerically manageable model collision operator is developed specifically for turbulence simulations. The like-particle collision operator includes both pitch-angle scattering and energy diffusion and satisfies the physical con straints required for collision operators: it conserves particles, momentum and energy, obeys Boltzmanns H-theorem (collisions cannot decrease entropy), vanishes on a Maxwellian, and efficiently dissipates small-scale structure in the velocity space. The process of transforming this collision operator into the gyroaveraged form for use in gyrokinetic simulations is detailed. The gyroaveraged model operator is shown to have more suitable behavior at small scales in phase space than previously suggested models. A model operator for electron-ion collisions is also presented.

Within integrated tokamak plasma modelling, turbulent transport codes are typically the computational bottleneck limiting their routine use outside of post-discharge analysis. Neural network (NN) surrogates have been used to accelerate these calculat ions while retaining the desired accuracy of the physics-based models. This paper extends a previous NN model, known as QLKNN-hyper-10D, by incorporating the impact of impurities, plasma rotation and magnetic equilibrium effects. This is achieved by adding a light impurity fractional density ($n_{imp,light} / n_e$) and its normalized gradient, the normalized pressure gradient ($alpha$), the toroidal Mach number ($M_{tor}$) and the normalized toroidal flow velocity gradient. The input space was sampled based on experimental data from the JET tokamak to avoid the curse of dimensionality. The resulting networks, named QLKNN-jetexp-15D, show good agreement with the original QuaLiKiz model, both by comparing individual transport quantity predictions as well as comparing its impact within the integrated model, JINTRAC. The profile-averaged RMS of the integrated modelling simulations is <10% for each of the 5 scenarios tested. This is non-trivial given the potential numerical instabilities present within the highly nonlinear system of equations governing plasma transport, especially considering the novel addition of momentum flux predictions to the model proposed here. An evaluation of all 25 NN output quantities at one radial location takes $sim$0.1 ms, $10^4$ times faster than the original QuaLiKiz model. Within the JINTRAC integrated modelling tests performed in this study, using QLKNN-jetexp-15D resulted in a speed increase of only 60 - 100 as other physics modules outside of turbulent transport become the bottleneck.
The quasilinear particle flux arising from gyrokinetic instabilities is calculated in the electrostatic and collisionless approximation, keeping the geometry of the magnetic field arbitrary. In particular, the flux of electrons and heavy impurity ion s is studied in the limit where the former move quickly, and the latter slowly, along the field compared with the mode frequency. Conclusions are drawn about how the particle fluxes of these species depend on the magnetic-field geometry, mode structure and frequency of the instability. Under some conditions, such as everywhere favourable or unfavourable magnetic curvature and modest temperature gradients, it is possible to make general statements about the fluxes independently of the details of the instability. In quasi-isodynamic stellarators with favourable bounce-averaged curvature for most particles, the particle flux is always outward if the temperature gradient is not too large, suggesting that it might be difficult to fuel such devices with gas puffing from the wall. In devices with predominantly unfavourable magnetic curvature, the particle flux can be inward, resulting in spontaneous density peaking in the centre of the plasma. In the limit of highly charged impurities, ordinary diffusion (proportional to the density gradient) dominates over other transport channels and the diffusion coefficient becomes independent of mass and charge. An estimate for the level of transport caused by magnetic-field fluctuations arising from ion-temperature-gradient instabilities is also given and is shown to be small compared with the electrostatic component.

We are developing a new continuum gyrokinetic code, Gkeyll, for use in edge plasma simulations, and here present initial simulations of turbulence on open field lines with model sheath boundary conditions. The code implements an energy conserving dis continuous Galerkin scheme, applicable to a general class of Hamiltonian equations. Several applications to test problems have been done, including a calculation of the parallel heat-flux on divertor plates resulting from an ELM crash in JET, for a 1x/1v SOL scenario explored previously, where the ELM is modeled as a time-dependent intense upstream source. Here we present initial simulations of turbulence on open field lines in the LAPD linear plasma device. We have also done simulations in a helical open-field-line geometry. While various simplifications have been made at present, this still includes some of the key physics of SOL turbulence, such as bad-curvature drive for instabilities and rapid parallel losses with sheath boundary conditions. This is useful for demonstrating the overall feasibility of this approach and for initial physics studies of SOL turbulence. We developed a novel version of DG that uses Maxwellian-weighted basis functions while still preserving exact particle and energy conservation. The Maxwellian-weighted DG method achieves the same error with 4 times less computational cost in 1v, or 16 times lower cost in the 2 velocity dimensions of gyrokinetics (assuming memory bandwidth is the limiting factor).
In this work, we compare gyrokinetic simulations in stellarators using different computational domains, namely, flux tube, full-flux-surface, and radially global domains. Two problems are studied: the linear relaxation of zonal flows and the linear s tability of ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes. Simulations are carried out with the codes EUTERPE, GENE, GENE-3D, and stella in magnetic configurations of LHD and W7-X using adiabatic electrons. The zonal flow relaxation properties obtained in different flux tubes are found to differ with each other and with the radially global result, except for sufficiently long flux tubes, in general. The flux tube length required for convergence is configuration-dependent. Similarly, for ITG instabilities, different flux tubes provide different results, but the discrepancy between them diminishes with increasing flux tube length. Full-flux-surface and flux tube simulations show good agreement in the calculation of the growth rate and frequency of the most unstable modes in LHD, while for W7-X differences in the growth rates are found between the flux tube and the full-flux-surface domains. Radially global simulations provide results close to the full-flux-surface ones. The radial scale of unstable ITG modes is studied in global and flux tube simulations finding that in W7-X, the radial scale of the most unstable modes depends on the binormal wavenumber, while in LHD no clear dependency is found.
