We present results on electron transport in quasi-one dimensional (1D) quantum wires in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures obtained using an asymmetric confinement potential. The variation of the energy levels of the spatially quantized states is followed from strong confinement through weak confinement to the onset of two-dimensionality. An anticrossing of the initial ground and first excited states is found as the asymmetry of the potential is varied giving rise to two anticrossing events which occur on either side of symmetric confinement. We present results analysing this behaviour and showing how it can be affected by the inhomogeneity in background potential. The use of an enhanced source-drain voltage to alter the energy levels is shown to be a significant validation of the analysis by showing the formation of double rows of electrons which correlate with the anticrossing.

Electrical conduction is studied along parabolically confined quasi-one dimensional channels, in the framework of a revised linear-response theory, for elastic scattering. For zero magnetic field an explicit multichannel expression for the conductanc e is obtained that agrees with those of the literature. A similar but new multichannel expression is obtained in the presence of a magnetic field B||z perpendicular to the channel along the x axis. An explicit connection is made between the characteristic time for the tunnel-scattering process and the transmission and reflection coefficients that appear in either expression. As expected, for uncoupled channels the finite field expression gives the complete (Landauer-type) conductance of N parallel channels, a result that has not yet been reported in the literature. In addition, it accounts explicitly for the Hall field and the confining potential and is valid, with slight modifications, for tilted magnetic fields in the (x,z) plane.
We present a functional renormalization group calculation of the effect of strong interactions on the shape of the Fermi surface of weakly coupled metallic chains. In the regime where the bare interchain hopping is small, we show that scattering proc esses involving large momentum transfers perpendicular to the chains can completely destroy the warping of the true Fermi surface, leading to a confined state where the renormalized interchain hopping vanishes and a coherent motion perpendicular to the chains is impossible.

A quasi-exciton condensate is a phase characterized by quasi-long range order of an exciton (electron-hole pair) order parameter. Such a phase can arise naturally in a system of two parallel oppositely doped quantum wires, coupled by repulsive Coulom b interactions. We show that the quasi-exciton condensate phase can be stabilized in an extended range of parameters, in both spinless and spinful systems. For spinful electrons, the exciton phase is shown to be distinct from the usual quasi-long range ordered Wigner crystal phase characterized by power-law density wave correlations. The two phases can be clearly distinguished through their inter-wire tunneling current-voltage characteristics. In the quasi-exciton condensate phase the tunneling conductivity diverges at low temperatures and voltages, whereas in the Wigner crystal it is strongly suppressed. Both phases are characterized by a divergent Coulomb drag at low temperature. Finally, metallic carbon nanotubes are considered as a special case of such a one dimensional setup, and it is shown that exciton condensation is favorable due to the additional valley degree of freedom.
The wavefunctions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characterist ics in the spatially resolved local density of states of a two-dimensional mixed surface alloy Bi_xPb_{1-x}/Ag(111), by combining high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy with spin and angle-resolved inverse-photoemission experiments. Our detailed knowledge of the surface alloy electronic band structure, the exact lattice structure and the atomically resolved local density of states enables us to construct a realistic Anderson tight binding model of the mixed surface alloy, and to directly compare the measured local density of states characteristics with those from our model calculations. The statistical analyses of these two-dimensional local density of states maps reveal their log-normal distributions and multifractal scaling characteristics of the underlying wavefunctions with a finite anomalous scaling exponent. Finally, our experimental results confirm theoretical predictions of an exact scaling symmetry for Anderson quantum phase transitions in the Wigner-Dyson classes.
At low energy, electrons in doped graphene sheets behave like massless Dirac fermions with a Fermi velocity which does not depend on carrier density. Here we show that modulating a two-dimensional electron gas with a long-wavelength periodic potentia l with honeycomb symmetry can lead to the creation of isolated massless Dirac points with tunable Fermi velocity. We provide detailed theoretical estimates to realize such artificial graphene-like system and discuss an experimental realization in a modulation-doped GaAs quantum well. Ultra high-mobility electrons with linearly-dispersing bands might open new venues for the studies of Dirac-fermion physics in semiconductors.
