The Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ series is purported to span from antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator at x = 0 to a trivial AF insulator at x = 1. Here we report on neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions across this series. All compounds measured possess ferromagnetic (FM) triangular layers and we find a crossover from AF to FM interlayer coupling near x = 1 for our samples. The large spin gap at x = 0 closes rapidly and the average FM exchange interactions within the triangular layer increase with Sb substitution. Similar to a previous study of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, we find severe spectral broadening which increases dramatically across the compositional series. In addition to broadening, we observe an additional sharp magnetic excitation in MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ that may indicate the development of local magnetic modes based on recent reports of antisite disorder between Mn and Sb sublattices. The results suggest that both substitutional and antisite disorder contribute substantially to the magnetism in Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$.

MnBi2Te4(MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator that combines a topologically non-trivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. We perform inelastic neutron scattering (INS) on co-aligned single crystals to study the magnetic interactions in MBT. Consistent with previous work, we find that the AF interlayer exchange coupling and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have comparable strength, which supports metamagnetic transitions that allow access to different magnetic symmetries in applied fields. Modelling of the two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires the introduction of long-range and competing Heisenberg FM and AF interactions, up to at least the seventh nearest-neighbor, and possess anomalous damping, especially near the Brillouin zone boundary. First-principles calculations of insulating MBT find that both interlayer and intralayer magnetic interactions are long-ranged. We discuss the potential roles that bulk $n$-type charger carriers and chemical disorder play in the magnetism of MBT.
Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) offer a combination of topologically nontrivial characteristics and magnetic order and show promise in terms of potentially interesting physical phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topo logical axion insulating states. However, the understanding of their properties and potential applications have been limited due to a lack of suitable candidates for MTIs. Here, we grow two-dimensional single crystals of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulk and exfoliate them into thin flakes in order to search for intrinsic MTIs. We perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, low-temperature transport measurements, and first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, transport properties, and magnetism of this family of materials, as well as the evolution of their topological properties. We find that there exists an optimized MTI zone in the Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 phase diagram, which could possibly host a high-temperature QAH phase, offering a promising avenue for new device applications.
The evolution of magnetism and superconductivity in Ce$_2$Rh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$In$_8$ solid solutions has been studied within the entire concentration range by means of thermodynamic and magnetic measurements at ambient pressure and at temperatures betwee n 0.35 K and room temperature. For this purpose, single crystals with Pd concentrations x = 0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.55, 0.85 and 1 have been grown from In self-flux and characterized by x-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis. Starting from the antiferromagnet Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$, the Neel temperature gradually decreases with increasing Pd concentration and the antiferromagnetism has disappeared for $x ge 0.45$. Superconductivity has been observed only for Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$.
We present a temperature-dependent resonant elastic soft x-ray scattering (REXS) study of the metal-insulator transition in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7, performed at both Ru and Mn L-edges. Resonant magnetic superstructure reflections, which indicate an incipie nt instability of the parent compound, are detected below the transition. Based on modelling of the REXS intensity from randomly distributed Mn impurities, we establish the inhomogeneous nature of the metal-insulator transition, with an effective percolation threshold corresponding to an anomalously low x<0.05 Mn substitution.
The effect of chemical substitution on the ground state of the geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet CsCrF$_4$ has been investigated through a neutron powder diffraction experiment. Magnetic Fe-substituted CsCr$_{0.94}$Fe$_{0.06}$F$_{4}$ and nonma gnetic Al-substituted CsCr$_{0.98}$Al$_{0.02}$F$_{4}$ samples are measured, and magnetic Bragg peaks are clearly observed in both samples. Magnetic structure analysis revealed a 120$^{circ}$ structure having a magnetic propagation vector $mathbf{k}_{rm mag}=(0,0,1/2)$ in CsCr$_{0.94}$Fe$_{0.06}$F$_{4}$. For CsCr$_{0.98}$Al$_{0.02}$F$_{4}$, a quasi-120$^{circ}$ structure having $mathbf{k}_{rm mag}=(1/2,0,1/2)$ is formed. It is notable that the identified magnetic structure in CsCr$_{0.94}$Fe$_{0.06}$F$_{4}$ belongs to a different phase of ground states from those in CsCr$_{0.98}$Al$_{0.02}$F$_{4}$ and the parent CsCrF$_{4}$. These results suggest that the Fe-substitution strongly influences the ground state of CsCrF$_{4}$.
